This bulletin will guide you through today’s worship service and is followed by a section of prayers, thanksgivings and announcements. You will find hymns and other music in the blue Hymnal in your pew rack. Page numbers with an “S” are in the front section of the hymn book.

To Our Guests & Visitors: Please help us get to know you by filling out a "Welcome to St. Mark's" card in the pew rack and dropping it in the offering plate. Regardless of your religious background, you are welcome to receive Communion. Please see the back of the bulletin for a list of clergy, staff and vestry members.

Children – All children, regardless of their age, are invited to stay in worship with their parents. Worship bags and activity papers are available for children to read and/or color. These can be found on the children’s table in the narthex. See today’s schedule below for other child care options.

About Communion - Everyone is invited to receive Holy Communion, including young children. If you are wheat-intolerant, we offer gluten-free communion hosts and a chalice. Please indicate this preference to the communion minister at the altar rail.

Doxology.................................... Hymnal 380, verse 3 only .................................... Old 100th

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Eucharistic Prayer C The people remain standing. The Officiant sings or says

God of all power, Ruler of the Universe, you are worthy of glory and praise. Glory to you for ever and ever. At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home. By your will they were created and have their being. From the primal elements you brought forth the human race, and blessed us with memory, reason, and skill. You made us the rulers of creation. But we turned against you, and betrayed your trust; and we turned against one another. Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your sight. Again and again, you called us to return. Through prophets and sages you revealed your righteous Law. And in the fullness of time you sent your only Son, born of a woman, to fulfill your Law, to open for us the way of freedom and peace. By his blood, he reconciled us. By his wounds, we are healed.

Page 7: 10:30 service

7

And therefore we praise you, joining with the heavenly chorus, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all those in every generation who have looked to you in hope, to proclaim with them your glory, in their unending hymn: Officiant and People sing Sanctus ............................................................................................................... David Hurd

At the conclusion of the Sanctus, the people may stand or kneel. And so, Father, we who have been redeemed by him, and made a new people by water and the Spirit, now bring before you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord. On the night he was betrayed he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Remembering now his work of redemption, and offering to you this sacrifice of thanksgiving, We celebrate his death and resurrection, as we await the day of his coming.

Page 8: 10:30 service

8

Then the Officiant continues Lord God of our Fathers and Mothers; God of Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebecca, Jacob and Rachel; God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Open our eyes to see your hand at work in the world about us. Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace only, and not for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. Let the grace of this Holy Communion make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily serve the world in his name. Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the Bread. Accept these prayers and praises, Father, through Jesus Christ our great High Priest, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, your Church gives honor, glory, and worship, from generation to generation. AMEN. The Officiant continues And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Officiant breaks the consecrated Bread. A period of silence is kept. Officiant Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; People Therefore let us keep the feast. The Officiant says The Gifts of God for the People of God.

All are welcome to receive Holy Communion. The ushers direct the congregation to the altar rail. Those not wishing to receive communion are invited to the altar for a blessing: simply cross your arms over your chest to indicate this preference. Music at Communion ...........................Hymnal 497, Verses 1&3 ........... Wie schoen leuchtet 1. How bright appears the Morning Star, with mercy beaming from afar; the host of heaven rejoices; O righteous Branch, O Jesse’s Rod! Thou Son of Man and Son of God! We, too, will lift our voices: Jesus, Jesus! Holy, holy, yet most lowly, draw thou near us; great Emmanuel, come and hear us.

3. Rejoice, ye heavens; thou earth, reply; with praise, ye sinners, fill the sky, for this his Incarnation. Incarnate God, put forth thy power, ride on, ride on, great Conqueror, till all know thy salvation. Amen, amen! Alleluia, alleluia! Praise be given evermore, by earth and heaven.

Hymnal 264 ................................................. Song 34 1. The Word whom earth and sea and sky adore and laud and magnify, whose might they show, whose praise they tell, in Mary’s body deigned to dwell. 2. To Mary the Archangel came and God’s new message did proclaim, “Hail, Mary, you shall bear a son who shall be called the Holy One.”

3. Blest in the message Gabriel brought, blest in the work the Spirit wrought, most blest to bring to human birth the long-desired of all the earth. 4. Lord Jesus, Virgin-born, to thee eternal praise and glory be, whom with the Father we adore and Holy Spirit evermore.

Page 10: 10:30 service

10

Hymnal 265 ................................... Gabriel’s Message 1. The angel Gabriel from heaven came, his wings as drifted snow, his eyes as flame; “All hail,” said he, “thou lowly maiden Mary, most highly favored lady,” Gloria! 2. “For know a blessèd Mother thou shalt be, all generations laud and honor thee, thy Son shall be Emmanuel, by seers foretold, most highly favored lady,” Gloria!

3. Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head, “To me be as it pleaseth God,” she said, “my soul shall laud and magnify his holy Name.” Most highly favored lady, Gloria! 4. Of her, Emmanuel, the Christ, was born in Bethlehem, all on a Christmas morn, and Christian folk throughout the world will ever say— “Most highly favored lady,” Gloria!

Hymnal 277 .................................................. Raquel 1. Sing of Mary, pure and lowly, virgin-mother undefiled; sing of God’s own Son most holy, who became her little child. Fairest child of fairest mother, God the Lord who came to earth, Word made flesh, our very brother, takes our nature by his birth. 2. Sing of Jesus, son of Mary, in the home at Nazareth, toil and labor cannot weary love enduring unto death. Constant was the love he gave her, though he went forth from her side, forth to preach, and heal, and suffer, till on Calvary he died.

3. Glory be to God the Father; glory be to God the Son; glory be to God the Spirit; glory to the Three in One. From the heart of blessed Mary, from all saints the song ascends, and the Church the strain re-echoes unto earth’s remotest ends.

After Communion, the People kneel as the Officiant says Let us pray.

Page 11: 10:30 service

11

Officiant and People Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Blessing

Officiant The blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you for ever.

People Amen. Closing Hymn .................................. Hymnal 56 vs 1-4 .......................... Veni, veni Emmanuel 1. O come, O come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel, that mourns in lonely exile here until the Son of God appear. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel! 6. O come, thou Dayspring from on high, and cheer us by thy drawing nigh; disperse the gloomy clouds of night, and death’s dark shadow put to flight.

7. O come, Desire of nations, bind in one the hearts of all mankind; bid thou our sad divisions cease, and be thyself our King of Peace. 8. O come, O come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel, that mourns in lonely exile here until the Son of God appear.

Officiant Let us go forth into the world, rejoicing in the power of the Spirit. People Thanks be to God.

Following the service, everyone is invited to Mahon Hall for fellowship and coffee hour.

No Sunday School today. Classes will resume on January 8th.

Your Face I am Seeking… St. Mark’s is blessed with a rich and varied collection of paintings, prints, icons and other art pieces. “Your Face I am Seeking” is the title of the painting that is hanging above the altar. The artist, Ludmila Pawlowska, created this piece in 2012. This painting was part of the Icons in Transformation exhibit that St. Mark’s hosted in the summer of 2013. It contains many elements, including a cross, a tree, a face of Christ, and references to the legend of St. Veronica, who tended to Christ on the way to Calvary. Its purchase for St. Mark’s was made possible by a gift in loving memory of Phil and Dru Carter, who called St. Mark’s home for fifty-five years.

-Announcements- TODAY

Christmas Cards, Handmade beaded necklaces, and handmade crosses are on sale today in the narthex. All proceeds will go to the Women’s Center in Toliara, Madagascar. The necklaces and crosses were handmade by women of Madagascar using the May 8, 2016 St. Mark’s bulletins that Rev. Patsy McGregor took back to Madagascar with her after preaching at St. Mark’s. Rev. Patsy and her husband, Bishop Todd McGregor are the founders of People Reaching People in Toliara, Madagascar. St. Mark’s has had an ongoing relationship with the McGregors for many years and we are excited about this opportunity to support the work of the Toliara women. The annual Lessons and Carols service will be held this evening at 7:30 pm, followed by a festive reception in Mahon Hall. Music will be by Britten, Howells, Ord, Darke, and many others. This unique service of scripture readings, along with seasonal hymns and carols, was designed for and first celebrated in 1918 at King's College Chapel in Cambridge, England.

Green Team Tip: Greening the Advent & Christmas Seasons – It’s a Wrap. In the U.S., we throw away 25% more trash during the time from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day than any other time of year – a whopping 25 million tons. If you still have gifts to wrap, consider packaging that is reusable: gift bags, decorative boxes and tins, baskets (thrift stores are a great place to find inexpensive baskets), cloth bags, mason jars, new dish towels. For an

alternative to purchased paper wrap, consider Sunday comics, colorful magazine pages, or old maps from a thrift store. If you do buy gift wrapping paper, avoid the shiny, metalized paper, which is not recyclable. And when the gift opening is over, separate the paper wrap (recyclable) from the ribbons & foil-type wrap (landfill) from the reusable (to store for the next time).Have a question or suggestion for the Green Team? Email [email protected].

Make a Gift of Stock to St. Mark’s!

Why Give Stock? With the stock market near an all-time high and with the end of the year quickly approaching, now is the perfect time to consider making a gift of appreciated stock to St. Mark’s. A donor who gives a gift of common stock, held longer than one year, avoids capital gains taxation on the gift and is able to take a charitable deduction using the full value of the gift, claiming up to 30 percent of adjusted gross income (AGI) in the year the gift is made with up to five years to absorb the full deduction.

Three easy steps for making a gift of stock Step 1: Determine the name of the stock(s) and number of shares to be gifted to St.

Mark’s. Step 2: Instruct your broker to contact Steve Becker at Wintrust Wealth Management

(phone: 312-431-6545). Steve will provide your broker with instructions for transferring the stock to Wintrust on behalf of St. Mark’s.

Step 3: Contact Chris Ponstein, the St. Mark’s Bookeeper at 630-858-1020 / [email protected] and provide information about the gift, including the name of the stock(s), number of shares and the purpose of the gift (pledge payment, operating fund, a specific project, etc.).

Note: St. Mark’s financial policy calls for gifts of stock to be sold. The donor is given credit for the market value of the stock when it is sold – not the gift’s cost value. The church pays for commissions and transfer fees.

Any questions: Contact the St. Mark’s Treasurer at 630-858-1020 / [email protected] Thank you!
