Warm-up, 10.14.2009Show Mr. Benson what a transverse wave looks like. Next, demonstrate a compressional wave.
Montrez M. Benson à ce qu'une onde transversale ressemble. Après, démontrez une vague de compression.
Demuestre a Sr. Benson qué una onda transversal parece. Después, demuestre una onda de compresión.
Notes, Chapter 12The Earth’s crust is composed of a series of
plates (tectonic plates) floating on top of the liquid, molten core of the planet.
• Mid-ocean ridge: An underwater mountain created by two tectonic plates moving away from each other.
• Rift Valley: The valley created by two plates moving away from each other. Magma may emerge from these points, cycling crust upwards.
Rift Valley (African Rift Valley, East Africa)
Notes, Chapter 12
• Divergent Boundary: Where two plates are moving away from each other.
• Convergent Boundary: Where two plates are moving towards each other.
• Subduction Zone: A kind of convergent zone where two plates come together, one being pushed under the other.
• Transform Boundary: Where two plates are moving along-side each other. Faults form in these areas.
Transform Boundary
• The Alpine Fault (New Zealand)
Transform Boundary
Plate Tectonics Mini-lab• Get with a partner and take out a sheet of
paper and a book.• Fold, cut, and tape your sheet of paper to
model each of the different kinds of plate boundaries.
• Color the paper to illustrate different levels of elevation. Red = high elevation. Yellow = medium elevation. Blue = low elevation.
• Look at a map of the world and note the position of mountains.
Midterm Practice: Due Friday
P. 13, #4
P. 16 #1-2
P. 21 #1-5
P. 26 #5
P. 34, 35 all
Midterm Project (Major Project #3): Science Fair
• Requirements:– Must perform an experiment. The experiment can
be about anything you choose. Pick something you’re interested in!!!
– A science fair display. Typically a poster board displaying the steps of the scientific method you performed, as well as pictures/photos of the experiment, illustrations/graphs/charts, and various other visual aids.
• Work in pairs.
Wrap-up
• Who do you think should win a Nobel Prize? Why?
