Remember in Prayer THE LAMPLIGHTER Newsletter of the
October 2019
The stories of Jesus found in the gospels are interesting and intriguing. Stories that often have insights into the lives of people Jesus encounters or stories about how Jesus responds in life situations. Our text comes from the Gospel of Mark. It is one of my favorite stories because I have had the opportunity to visit the town of Capernaum, where our story takes place.
Mark 2:1-12 1 When he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. 2 So many gathered around that there was no longer room for them, not even in front of the door; and he was speaking the word to them. 3 Then some people came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. 4 And when they could not bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him; and after having dug through it, they let down the mat on which the paralytic lay. 5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Son, your sins are forgiven." 6 Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, 7 "Why does this fellow speak in this way? It is blasphemy! Who can forgive sins but God alone?" 8 At once Jesus perceived in his spirit that they were discussing these questions among themselves; and he said to them, "Why do you raise such questions in your hearts? 9 Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Stand up and take your mat and walk'? 10 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins"—he said to the paralytic— 11 "I say to you, stand up, take your mat and go to your home." 12 And he stood up, and immediately took the mat and went out before all of them; so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, "We have never seen anything like this!"
The one area I am focusing on is a lesson for the Church. In this short lesson, there are many things to highlight and many different characters.
First of all, there are people involved in the story. There is the crowd, Jesus, friends, and the paralyzed man. Also in the story, there are other things which seem pertinent. Such as the town of Capernaum, the house, location, and the situation. Jesus has come back home and as popular as he is, there is a large crowd gathered to hear his message and to be healed.
Jesus has the power to forgive sins and to heal as he proclaims. As the story goes, in the crowd is a paralyzed man who wants/needs to see Jesus. Those who brought him had to devise a way for the paralyzed man to get an audience with the healer/savior by lowering him through the roof.
Friends, this man has friends. Those who have known him and his situation. Friends who are willing to put aside their personal needs to help.
Jesus Christ makes himself available to those who need Him, and it is the Churches responsibility to show them the way to meet Jesus. There are those all around the Church who are paralyzed. It is our responsibility to offer them the opportunity to meet Jesus. The healer/savior.
Remember, Jesus has the power to change lives if we take the opportunity to bring or invite others to meet him. Shalom,

Myra Galloway Tatum gave to the General Budget in appreciation of the United Methodist Women (UMW).
Ellen Blue invites us to explore and celebrate the history of United Methodist Women and its predecessor organizations. As Blue says, "Women have done some of the most important ministry the church has ever accomplished." Here she shares the voices and stories of our foremothers, including the former
denominations that now compose The United Methodist Church. Despite serious resistance from churchmen, these women formed foreign missionary societies to provide education and health care for women and girls internationally, and home missionary societies that tackled racial justice and other pressing social issues at home. They also helped establish the deaconess program, the first opportunity in our tradition for large numbers of women to perform full-time ministries of service and justice, and opened the doors for women to take on leadership roles in many arenas.

Honored guests below left to right are Spring City Elementary School’s Assistant Principal, Jerry Cook, and Principal,Tammy Boles; Spring City Middle School’s Holly Roberson, Guidance Counselor, and former Principal, Lisa Garrison; and Rhea County High School Principal, Jesse Messimer. Please continue to pray daily for our schools, staff, and students.

Featured with Pastor Dale is new member, Diani Gales, who joined our church on Profession of Faith, Sunday, August 25, 2019, at the 11 a.m. service.
On Homecoming Sunday, September 8, 2019, Bill and Sue Ellen Speaker joined our church family at 9 a.m. at The Spring - Contemporary Worship Service. Bill & Sue Ellen united with us by transfer of letter from the King of Glory Lutheran Church in Elgin, IL. Pastor Dale is featured with the Speakers as he welcomed them as new members. Homecoming was such a special day to have Bill & Sue Ellen join our church.
Homecoming is always a memorable day in the life of our church, and this year’s was no exception. Rev. Charles Harrison preached at the 11 a.m. worship service. The choral anthem was “Headin’ for the Promise Land” with Angela Jackson and Bryan Massengale, pianists. Lunch and fellowship was enjoyed by all following the worship service in the Family Life Center.
Thank you to Joe Lisa for setting up all the tables and chairs. What would we do without him? A special thank you, too, to Pat Douglas, the Rose Family, and all others who helped. Everyone working together made our 2019 Homecoming Celebration one of the best!
It just isn’t Homecoming without fried chicken and corn, and there was plenty of both to go around. Thank you to everyone who brought your favorite dish with an extra one to share. Everything was delicious!
Barbara Rose and Patty Crowder are shown as they uncovered the food and arranged it on the serving tables. See all the yummy casseroles!
