    TheIAFMuseum,Palam isthefirsteverAerospacemuseumofIndia.The IAF

    Museumhasthelargestcollectionofaircrafts.It showcasestheachievementsofIAFsince1930.

    itisbuiltonthepropertyofNorthernAirCommand.Themuseumoffersaninsightnotonlyinto

    thehistoryoftheIndianAirForcebutacompletepictureofMilitaryaviationinIndia.Starting

    fromtheinitialdayswhenIndianaviatorsflewfortheRoyalFlyingCorpsduringtheFirstWorld

    War,rightuptothedaysoftheKargil Operations.Thevisitorisregaledwithpictures,

    mementoes,souvenirs,models,andtheactualaircraftthemselves.

    DesignAnalysis:

    SitePlanning&Circulation:

    Thesiteisirregularinshapeandflatwithanareaofaround4acres.

    Itis

    approached

    from

    Palam road

    entrance

    at

    asetback

    of

    from

    the

    road.

    Asthemuseumisentered,ablackceramictiledwalkwaywithhedgesonbothsides,leads

    totheWarmemorialtowardsright.

    Furtheraheadliestheentrancetothemuseumblockwithindoorgalleryspacethatopens

    upfurthertothelargehangarattheend.

    Ontheleftliesthemuseumofficeandthecafeteria.

    Theoutdoorexhibitsarenotverymuchdistributedexceptfortwopartsofthesitewith

    outdoordisplaysasmostoftheaircraftsareaccommodatedwithinthehangar.

    The

    site

    orientation

    is

    such

    that

    the

    outdoor

    galleries

    open

    up

    towards

    south

    sun.

    IndoorGallery1:

    Themuseumhousestwodisplaygalleries.Firstgallery,singlestoreyed,isenteredasthe

    visitorcrosses

    the

    war

    memorial.

    It

    has

    areception

    counter

    and

    adjoins

    the

    hangar.

    Theindoorgallery1exhibitsphotographsanduniformsalongwithvarioussmallmodels

    dividedintovarioussectionsliketheAirChiefsSection,theRollofHonour sectionetc.

    Thegalleryareaisverysmallwithrespecttotheadjoininghangar.

    Thecirculationpatternislinearandexhibitsareplacedalongitinglasscasesthatdefine

    thewalkway.

    Theproportionofthegallerywithlowerceiling,smallerwidthandgreatlengthmakesit

    uncomfortabletomovewithinthespace.

    Oncethegalleryisenteredthevisitorhastowalktheentirelengthofthespacetoreachto

    asmalldoorthatleadstothebighangar.

    IndoorGallery2&3:

    Thesecondindoorgalleryliesinonecornerofthesitealongtheboundary.

    Theblockissinglestoreyed andhousesdocumentsandweaponrypreservedoveracourse

    ofwars.

    TheblockhascirculationdirectedduetotheUshapedbuildingprofilealongwhichthe

    exhibitsarebeingplaced.

    Mostofthedisplayboardsarevacant.

    Samelinearpatternofexhibitingisfollowedwithoutanysurpriseswhichdoesnotattract

    visitorsattention.

    alongit.

    Aviewingplatformisprovidedtohaveoverallviewofthehangar,howeverinsufficient

    heightmakesitimpossibletoviewfaroffexhibits.

    accommodatedinsidethehangarduetotheirlargesize.Hencethesearedisplayedin

    outdoor

    galleries. Theoutdoorgalleryalsoshowcasestanksandcrashedaircrafts,helicoptersandarmory

    capturesfromPakistanduringtheIndoPakwar1971.

    Theinformationboardsarenotplacedincoordinationwiththeexhibits.

    Theoutdoorexhibitspacesarenotdesignedharmoniously.

    Lighting:

    Themuseumhasinsufficientlightingbothartificialandnatural.

    Indoorgallery1hasnovoidsinthebuildingtoletdaylightin,henceartificiallightingis

    requiredforalldaylong.

    Theartificiallightingqualityandquantityisalsopoor.Thelightsusedhavelowintensity

    hencedonotcreatetheambiencethatamuseumrequires.

    slit

    opening

    the

    structure

    but

    is

    inefficientforthelargespace.
