R O S S , C A L I F O R N I ARoss is a small, incorporated town in Marin County, California, just north of San Francisco, nestled against the Ross Common, Fred Allen Park and Corte Madera Creek, and offering views of the surrounding hillsides and Bald Hill. The hub of Ross is its downtown where Ross merchants provide a variety of products and services in a relaxed, small-town atmosphere. The history of Ross is rich, dating back to land grants, up through celebrating its 100-year anniversary in September 2008. The population was 2,329 at the 2000 census.

A haven from modern day demands and stresses this park-like retreat is close to all the recreational activities and small town experiences that living in Marin County offers, plus all the amenities of the city of San Francisco nearby. California’s famous Napa Valley wine country is less than an hour North while San Francisco Airport is less than an hour South.

HISTORY:For thousands of years prior to 1800, the Coast Miwok Indians lived and were sustained by the land that is now called Ross Valley. The Coast Miwok revered the land, plants and animals of the Ross Valley through tribal cultural beliefs and practices. European diseases eventually decimated the Indian population. The settlement in 1817 of Mission San Raphael, with its vast land holding, also resulted in further incursions into areas occupied by the Coast Miwok Indians.

After the Mexican Revolution of 1821, the “land grant” system of parceling out land gave rise to what we now know as Marin County. Ross was originally part of an 8,877-acre Mexican land grant to Juan B.R. Cooper in 1840 known as Ranch Punta de Quentin Can-ada de San Anselmo. The Town of Ross itself was named in honor of James Ross, who purchased the land in 1857 for $50,000. Ross built his home on Redwood Drive and moved there with his wife and three children. When James Ross died in 1862 his wife, Annie Ross, was forced to sell a portion of James Ross’ larger land holdings to pay each of their daughters $10,000. The 297 acres she had remaining make up part of the Town of Ross today.

Ross Bear: When sculptor Beniamino Bufano’s compressed marble dust bear was donated to Ross by Jerome and Peggy Flax in 1971, it was placed in front of the Town Hall and soon became the symbol of the Town.

Post Office: In 1958, the Ross Post Office was built on the site of the old North Pacific Coast Railroad Station.

Town Hall: In 1926, the Town of Ross voted to spend $100,000 to buy the Shotwell estate upon which the present Ross Town Hall and Fire Station were built in 1927.

Page 53: 108 Laurel Grove, Ross, California--Photo Book

Once the Town was incorporated one of the first actions of the new Town Council was to make it illegal to cut down trees without Town approval. Soon the streets were paved, streetlights erected, concrete bridges built over the creek and a firehouse constructed. Thanks to the foresight of our early leaders, the Town today rests under a leafy canopy that is unique in Marin County.

The Town of Ross celebrated its 100-year anniversary on September 19-20, 2008. It was a magical weekend filled with many memorable moments and those that attended had a rare and wonderful opportunity to honor the community’s roots and welcome its future.

LOCAL RECREATIONPHOENIX LAKE | LAKE LAGUNITAS | BON TEMPE LAKE

The Marin Municipal Water District manages all the land on the northeastern slope of Mount Tamalpais. With 5 reser-voirs in this area (Phoenix Lake was built in 1905), the Mount Tamalpais basin has unlimited hiking/biking/recreational options. Unlike the State Park portion of Tam, the trailheads near the lakes are easy to get to. Phoenix Lake, which is close to 104 Laurel Grove, provides convenient access and an abundance of hiking possibilities. A short and easy walk around Phoenix Lake requires a stroll of about 2.7 miles. If you've got energy to burn and strong legs, you can impress your friends by hiking all the way to the top of Tam, via Eldridge Grade. It's over 12.5 miles round trip, and an eleva-tion gain (and then loss) of 2,114 feet. Most visitors seem to use the trails near Phoenix Lake for exercise and relaxing walking with kids and/or dogs.
