10K Design use IES SketchUp plug-in to provide detailed model of M&C Saatchi’s London Head Quarters allowing the environmental consultants to easily carry out Part L calculations and meet compliance

The Project

M&C Saatchi’s London Headquarters

10k use a number of different software packages for producing 3D information, from BIM packages such as Revit and Vasari to Sketchup - making full use of IES plugins. Their approach is to use 3D models in a wide variety of ways to enable a broad cross section of Clients to take advantage of the latest technological innovations. In addition to providing support for others, they have also used environmental analysis software for analysing their own eco-home designs and provided drawing, design and modelling services for a project that featured on Grand Designs.

The BuildingArcher Architect’s proposal looks to refurbish a Grade 2 listed building fronting onto Golden Square, Soho, together with the demolition of the Beak Street annex located immediately to the rear. In its place the new building will not only provide state of the art office accommodation for the agency but will also provide a significant element of retail space. The addition has been designed to reinforce the local street scene by adding a flagship store to this bustling shopping destination. The development will finally complete the view looking down Carnaby Street.

The principal facade will combine such diverse materials as corten steel, ETFE cushions, photo-voltaic panels and structural glazed components, supported on a complex geometric diagram that gently curves away from the street edge into the site as the building rises from ground to 5 storeys.

When complete the development will total 7000sqm of accommodation, with an anticipated BREEAM rating of Excellent. Work is scheduled to commence during the third quarter of 2012 and will be complete a year later.

The ModelFrom the base set of dwg files 10k were able to quickly build a detailed model using a ‘thin wall’ method whereby each room is modelled as a separate entity. The model was produced using SketchUp, including a complex series of level changes and atrium spaces. At each stage of modelling, the IES plugin was used to set analytical parameters and ensure that each room would be recognised when Mesh Environmental Consultants ran the full analysis.

10k liaised with Mesh Consultants at all stages of the modelling process, providing draft versions in order to ensure that the model would function as required. The model allowed information such as heating and cooling systems and construction materials to be inputted so that it could then undertake data calculations.

10k Design were asked by Mesh Environmental Consultants (working with M&E consultant Carnell Warren Associates) to produce an IES analysis model of Archer Architect’s innovative Saatchi & Saatchi London Headquarters. 10k were chosen due to their modelling expertise and their detailed architectural knowledge, built up over many years within the industry.

When complete Archer Architect’s scheme will total

7000sqm of accommodation, with an anticipated BREEAM

rating of excellent.

The ChallengeJames Horner of 10k Design said “The main challenge of the project for us was narrowing down how the building should be constructed in three dimensions. Due to the complex series of overlapping open plan spaces and atriums it was not always clear where one zone ended and one began.”

Analysis and OutcomeThe model that 10k Design produced for Mesh Environmental Consultants allowed the Consultants to check compliance with the UK Building Regulations (Part L: Conservation of Fuel and Power) without having to model the scheme themselves. This assisted the consultants greatly as it meant they were able to easily take the building directly into the IES VE suite without any modelling work and concentrate on getting the data that they needed quickly and easily. The speed and ease of this process allowed Mesh to rapidly provide the project’s M&E Consultants with extensive data using 10k Design’s 3D model and meet UK compliance.
