About the UCLA Pacific AIDS Education Training Center The UCLA/Pacific AIDS Education and Training Center (PAETC) provides direct educational services to a broad range of health providers in Southern California and has developed video and Internet training modules used throughout the world.

The UCLA PAETC provides primary care professionals (Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Dentists, Dental Hygienists and Pharmacists) with the knowledge and skills necessary to care for HIV-infected patients and to increase the numbers of trained primary care professionals working with HIV-infected patients in the community. Training programs are designated by level, according to the experience, knowledge and needs of trainees.

The AIDS Education and Training Centers offer a national AIDS "Warmline" consultation service for physicians, pharmacists and other health professionals (800-933-3413) as well as a 24-hour hotline (888-448-4911) for Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) and a National Perinatal HIV Consultation and Referral Service (800-448-8765). Although our experts cannot offer opinions with regard to specific patients, they can respond to general questions with regard to diagnosis and management. For more information on the UCLA PAETC, please call (310) 794-8276.

About the UCLA AIDS Institute In 1981, UCLA physicians reported the very first cases of what they described as “newly acquired immunodeficiency”-what we now know as AIDS. These doctors’ discovery and the subsequent exponential explosion of AIDS cases in Los Angeles and elsewhere around the country and around the world, led to the formation of the widely-acclaimed UCLA AIDS Institute in 1992. Under the direction of Dr. Irvin S.Y. Chen, an internationally respected virologist, the UCLA AIDS Institute provides a multidisciplinary think-tank for top-flight researchers who are assailing HIV on many fronts.

Institute members include faculty who work in the fields of virology and immunology, genetics, cancer, neurology, ophthalmology, epidemiology, social science, public health, nursing, and disease prevention. Their studies are carried out at the UCLA Westwood campus, in community settings, at half a dozen major medical centers in greater Los Angeles, and at scores of locations in India, China, Brazil, and sub-Saharan Africa.

Through laboratory research leading to new treatments for HIV, providing outstanding care to patients with HIV and developing more effective prevention strategies, the UCLA AIDS Institute is leading the worldwide effort to eradicate HIV and AIDS. The Institute’s dedicated scientists are committed to developing more effective education and prevention strategies for at-risk communities around the world, and better treatments for all people living with HIV. Innovative research programs that aim to develop a safe and effective HIV vaccine are among the UCLA AIDS Institute’s very highest priorities.

About UCLA CHIPTSThe Center for HIV Identification, Prevention, and Treatment Services (CHIPTS) is a collaboration of researchers from UCLA, Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science, Friends Research Institute, and RAND working with the broader Los Angeles community toward a common goal: to enhance our collective understanding of HIV research and to promote early detection, effective prevention, and treatment programs for HIV. Funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, CHIPTS serves as a bridge among researchers, government, service providers, and people with HIV in responding to the changes in the HIV epidemic and in shaping sound public policy.

CHIPTS offers a range of services including consultation on the development of new research projects and assistance with obtaining funds for these initiatives. CHIPTS provides technical assistance in HIVprogram development and evaluation and sponsors an annual conference for developing researchers to present their work. In addition, the Center hosts an annual policy forum for researchers, government officials, and the HIV community to discuss emerging HIV policy issues, as well as hosts a research colloquia series

Course Objectives: This one-day symposium is designed to provide participants with relevant, reliable, up-to-date information on the clinical management of HIV-infected patients who have failed one or more antiretroviral regimens, or who have demonstrated some degree of resistance to one or more antiretroviral drugs or classes of drugs. At the conclusion of the course attendees should:

Have a better understanding of the roles that viral fitness, viral load and host immunity play in the management of extensively pretreated patients. Appreciate the clinical utility of genotypic and phenotypic resistance assays, and know how to incorporate the data derived from such assays into their decision-making process. Be familiar with the full range of therapeutic options, including newly approved and investigational drugs, for patients who have failed one or more multidrug antiretroviral regimens. Recognize and become familiar with the treatment of some of the long-term complications of chronic HIV-induced immunosuppression and therapy for HIV.

About the Center for Clinical AIDS Research and Education

UCLA has been a leader in AIDS and HIV-related research, education and patient care since 1981 when the nation’s first cases of AIDS were identified at the UCLA Medical Center. The UCLA Center for Clinical AIDS Research and Education (CARE Center) was established in 1990 to facilitate clinical research and to integrate current research findings with teaching and patient care. The UCLA CARE Center manages an outpatient clinic dedicated to patients with HIV and maintains an active clinical research program, which evaluates new antiretroviral therapies and investigates diseases associated with HIV and the complications of therapy. It is one of the original sites of the Adult AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG) and the AIDS Malignancy Consortium (AMC). An education and outreach program disseminates information on AIDS and HIV infection to healthcare providers and to the community. The CARE Center is also a primary location for training of medical students and housestaff at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA in the optimal care of patients with HIV.

The UCLA CARE Center location: Our administrative offices are located at: 1399 S. Roxbury Drive, Suite 100 9911 W. Pico Blvd., Suite 980 Los Angeles, California 90035 Los Angeles, California 90035
