1. Continue to focus on your classes by earning the best grades you can. Seek help when you need it by utilizing before and after school tutoring and Knight Time. Colleges will see final grades from grades 9th-11th only!

2. Attendance is key! It is important to be in class every day to receive the valuable material your teachers are sharing. This will help you to know what to study and prepare for at home. If you have to be out of school, email your teachers to see what you missed so that you have a jump start when you return.

3. Be here for the PSAT and Pre-ACT and take them seriously! These tests will help you prepare for the SAT and ACT later in high school. Doing your best on the pre-tests will help you reach your target scores on the actual tests. When you receive you score reports back, make sure you review them and the included study tips. Consider attending the Testing Information Night that is hosted by the Student Services Department each year for help interpreting your score reports.

4. Make sure you have a Naviance account and that you are using it! You can begin building a resume, research and create a college interest list and more! Visit https://connection.naviance.com to log in. Your username should be your school email address and your password should be your CMS student ID number. If you have trouble logging in, email your counselor for help.

5. Start thinking about college campus visits. This will help you get a feel for the campus, student body, and opportunities of the college to help you determine where you may like to apply. Take advantage of teacher workdays and other school holidays throughout the year to get campus visits done without missing school.

6. Get involved (or stay involved!) Participating in clubs, playing sports, working a part-time job, or volunteering in the community are all great ways to meet other students and be more invested in your high school career. It also shows colleges that you can balance your time between academics and extra-curriculars.If you are already involved in something like this, try to take a leadership role! For more competitive scholarships and colleges, students are encouraged to focus on one or two activities and really delve into those to show more depth and breadth within the activity. The harder an activity is to explain, the more significant it tends to be-and this is key when trying to be most competitive.

7. Spend some time on career exploration and potential college majors. Utilize Naviance to take Career Interest Profile assessments to utilize your likes and dislikes, to suggest possible careers and then to explore them more fully. Other ways to explore possible careers are to volunteer in different fields, look into internships or job shadowing opportunities, and find family members or friends who can give you information about their careers.

8. Start thinking about course selections for junior year. Registration will take place in the Spring! Utilize your current teachers as resources to decide which levels of courses are most appropriate for you. Remember that balance is important and you should not take on too heavy of a course load. Attend any informational night events that are held during the registration process. Consider Honors or AP in your best academic areas, and focus on what is the best fit for you, not what your friend or neighbor is doing!
