Commentary by Captain Mary Kim Kenney-Gutshall Naval Health Clinic Charleston commanding officer

Last week, I was very humbled at the invitationto be the Grand Marshal for the 2012 VeteransDay Parade hosted by the Ralph H. JohnsonVeterans Affairs Medical Center in Charleston.

The Department of Defense and VA are work-ing very hard to ensure lasting healthcare in aseamless manner from the beginning of our activecareer and throughout our career as veterans.

As I sat trying to think of what I would talkabout during my obligatory speech before theparade kicked off, I thought of a poem thatabsolutely moves me every time I hear it or readit. It truly paints a picture of the reason why wedecided, and continue to wear the cloth of thisgreat nation. It was written in 1970 by an Armyveteran, Charles M. Province, about a Soldier;however, the message applies to all members ofthe armed forces, past, present and future. It istitled, "It is the Soldier."

In this eloquent poem, Province says, "It is theSoldier, not the minister, who has given us free-dom of religion. It is the Soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the

Soldier, not the campus organizer, who has givenus freedom to protest. It is the Soldier, not thelawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. Itis the Soldier, not the politician, who has given usthe right to vote."

And in his final verse Province wrote, "It is theSoldier, who salutes the flag, serves beneath theflag and whose coffin is draped by the flag, whoallows the protester to burn the flag."

Province's powerful words are true. It is eachand every one of you that protects and preservesliberty and freedom for this great country.

I would also add that a veteran is the anony-

mous hero in the Tomb of the Unknowns, whose presence at Arlington NationalCemetery must forever preserve the memoryof all the other anonymous heroes whosevalor died unrecognized with them on thebattlefield or in the ocean's sunless deep.

He is the old man bagging groceries at thesupermarket - palsied now and aggravatinglyslow - who helped liberate a Nazi death camp, and who wishes all day long his wife were stillalive to hold him when the nightmares come.He is an ordinary and yet an extraordinaryhuman being - a person who offered some ofhis life's most vital years in the service of hiscountry, and who sacrificed his ambitions so

others would not have to sacrifice theirs. You are all guardians and serve as a sword

against the darkness, and you are nothing morethan the finest, greatest testimony on behalf of thefinest, greatest nation ever known.

The official Veterans Day recognition was lastweek, but I recognize each of you daily. I am hon-ored to stand alongside you and honored to callyou brothers and sisters in arms. Let us rememberto continually honor and respect those who havecome before us to defend this great nation. It isthese veterans who made our service possible.

worth repeating“The official Veterans Day

recognition was last week, butI recognize each of you daily. Iam honored to stand alongsideyou and honored to call you

brothers and sisters in arms. ”Captain Mary Kim Kenney-Gutshall

Commentary by Capt. Nicholas Mercurio1st Combat Camera Squadron

There is a preoccupation in today's Air Forcerhetoric with the word "warrior."

It begins with the Airman's Creed where, at theonset, we profess to be warrior's who haveanswered our nation's call.

From there it pervades our collective Air Forceconsciousness until we reach a state of semanticsatiation, a phenomenon wherein a word is usedso often it loses meaning.

There are cyber-warriors, intel-warriors andfinance-warriors, the liberal application of theterm stretching from aerial port to public affairsshop, from cockpit to classroom, until it becomeshopelessly contrived and utterly diluted.

Now, perhaps I am being too harsh in myappraisal. The question as to whether or not the

word "warrior" is being watered down is debat-able.

However, I would submit that the larger issuecenters on whether or not the word is even neces-sary. My point is this: Airman is enough. The termAirman carries with it enough historical heft thatit should suffice on its own.

An Airman is an innovator, prized for thinkingoutside the box, even when it is unpopular to doso. Retired Brig. Gen. Billy Mitchell is theembodiment of this concept, championing airpower after the conclusion of World War I despitetrenchant skepticism and overt opposition.

An Airman constantly forges ahead, seekingnew technological advances regardless of risksand unbound by the status quo. Retired Brig. Gen.Robin Olds and his generation of jet-engine pio-neers demonstrated this quality as they flewunproven aircraft with cutting-edge technology

despite the obvious danger. An Airman is, more than anything, a profes-

sional. There is no greater example of this factthan the B-17 crews of World War II which, infull knowledge of the fact that there was a 70 per-cent chance they would be shot down, flew day-time, strategic-bombing raids into Germanybecause it was their job to do so.

Airman is a term steeped in valor. It evokes thesame feelings of bravery, ferocity, honor andexpertise one associates with the word warriorwhile also bearing with it echoes of our proudservice heritage. We must, as an Air Force, reclaim the word Airman, reinvigorate in it thesame prestige and hold it in the same regard asdid our predecessors. In doing so we will not onlyhonor our past but secure our future as the great-est Air Force the world has ever seen.

"Airman" is enough

Squadron FCC coordinator. "Providers are expected to meet high standards ofcleanliness and safety outlined in Air Force Instruction, national fire life safecodes and accreditation standards, as well as national health and safety stan-dards outlined in 'Caring for Our Children: National Health and SafetyPerformance Standards: Guidelines for Out-of-Home Child Care Programs.'"

Unannounced home inspections are conducted monthly to ensure everyprovider consistently maintains these standards. In addition, homes are subjectto five unannounced inspections annually - a comprehensive fire, safety andhealth inspection, a multidisciplinary team inspection conducted by parentsand subject matter experts and a higher headquarters inspection.

Offering the same standards in safety, developmentally appropriate equip-ment and individualized attention as on-base settings, these homes are affiliat-ed with the Air Force and are required to meet all Air Force standards, as wellas state and county licensing requirements. Parents can be confident that chil-dren enrolled in a FCC home are cared for in a safe, stimulating in-home envi-ronment surrounded by developmental materials and nurturing interactionsthat help them thrive. Providers understand the stressors associated with themilitary life-style and are committed to assisting families with all of theirchild-care needs. Many providers offer evening and weekend care as well asopen their homes for children whose parents work swing or mid shifts.

The Air Force Subsidy Program was implemented as a means to reduce the

shortages of some types of care (care for infants, toddlers and children withspecial needs) and increase the availability of care for those families unable toaccess center-based programs. The program partially subsidizes the weeklychild care fee for parents using selected family child care spaces on or nearselected Air Force bases. Program participation is voluntary for FCC providersand parents and is subject to availability of funds. To be eligible, spouses mustbe a full-time student (as defined by their respective college), a full-timeemployee or a combination of part-time student/part-time employee. Parentswho enroll their child in the program are required to place their child on theCDC waiting list and acknowledge understanding their child may continue toparticipate in the program at a subsidized rate only so long as there is anotherchild on the waiting list to take their child's space. Parents offered a space inthe CDC may elect for their child to remain enrolled in FCC and pay the un-subsidized rate charged by their provider if there are no other children in theirchild's age group on the waiting list.

The Family Child Care Program is a vital link in the installation's child careprogram and is here to stay, according to Vickers.

"Our office keeps abreast of vacancies and we are available to assist parentsone-on-one with their individual child care needs," said Vickers.

For more information about the program or if you are interested in becom-ing an FCC provider, call 963-2546 for more information.

CDC strives for quality - continued from Page 1

Following the leaderCommentary by Staff Sgt. Timothy Boyer60th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs

TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. – It isperhaps one of the most difficult duties of anAirman, yet one which we tend not to talk aboutafter Basic Military Training or technical training.

We are taught throughout our careers how tobe effective leaders, but somewhere in the focusto become effective leaders, we lose the focus onbeing a good follower.

It is strange that being a follower tends to havea negative connotation. Without followers, manyof the things that made our country successfulwouldn't have occurred.

There were certainly civil rights leaders whopaved the way to the level of equality we enjoytoday, but without people who were willing tofollow those leaders, they would have been farless effective.

Could you imagine talking in a history classabout the One Man March that made such a hugeimpact? Hopefully the answer is no. As many areaware, it was a Million Man March and it wasbecause of those who chose to follow that it

made an impact. In the same way, having good followers is

critical to the Air Force mission. There are exam-ples of this every day at Travis.

The Airman who follows his technical order toensure the maintenance he performs meets thesafety standards necessary is one example. TheAirman who doesn't really want to be doing thejob she is in, but understands the role it plays inthe bigger picture so she shows up ready to workand do what her supervision asks without com-plaining, is another.

One of the gray areas of good followership iswhen and how to speak up when you may have adisagreement with your supervision. The methodto navigate such a challenge varies depending onpersonalities, but there are some basic ideas thatcan be helpful.

First, you have to choose your battles wisely. To do this, you must understand your part in themission. This will guide you as you determinewhether it is appropriate to make your suggestionor if it is more important to get the mission donefor that moment.

Second, it is important to remember that your

supervisor has likely been performing the jobmuch longer than you and has learned to be effi-cient based on trials and errors. Fresh ideas aregreat and should be shared, but do not be so tiedto your idea that you are closeminded to whydecisions are made. Understanding why deci-sions are made is one of the greatest ways tobuild yourself as a follower and a future leader.

Third, be selective. Retired Chief Master Sgt.Roger Buck once told me what he attributed tohis success.

"Make a habit of keeping your mouth shut,"he said. "Do this and when you have somethingto say, people will really listen."

His point is a good one. If you make a habit ofchallenging everything your leaders say or do,you will eventually be shrugged off as a nui-sance. However, by choosing your battles wisely, understanding why decisions are made and beingsilent most of the time, leadership will take youseriously when you have something to add.

It has been said, that to be a good leader, youmust first be a good follower. Practice being agood follower, so you can one day be the leaderthe Air Force needs you to be.

In March 1952, the City of Charlestonsigned a lease agreement with the U.S. AirForce for joint use of the city’s airport. For $1per year, the lease allowed the Air Force tooccupy all properties south and west of theSouthern Railways tracks, while the cityretained terminal buildings, hangars and otherbuildings along the north and east boundariesof the airport ... the old World War II portionof the field. Construction of base facilitiesbegan in May 1952.

On June 1, 1953, the base received its cur-rent name of Charleston Air Force Base andwas activated Aug. 1, 1953.

Two weeks later, on Aug. 15, 1953, thearrival of 50 C-119 Flying Boxcars effective-

ly made the base operational. Althoughnumerous construction projects were stillunderway, the 456th Troop Carrier Wing helda dedication ceremony Nov. 13, 1953, to openthe base officially.

When the Air Force submitted plans forcongressional approval in 1951 to reoccupyCharleston Airport, the request was pro-grammed for two troop carrier wings. Withthe 456th Troop Carrier Wing already inplace, advance elements of the newly activat-ed 1608th Air Transport Group, assigned toMilitary Air Transport Command (later,Military Airlift Command), first arrived inFebruary 1954, to establish operations. The official Air Force Holiday/Winter Safety Campaignruns from Nov. 16, 2012, to Jan. 2, 2013, focusing on traveland seasonal activities commonly associated with this time ofyear.

This year, the Air Force's theme is "SAFE-n-SOUND, AllYear Round."

Are you ready? Fall has arrived marking the beginning ofthe holiday season. Holidays are a time for families andfriends to get together, relax and enjoy each other's company.During the rush of the holiday season, safety often getspushed aside. We need to remember safety is crucial duringthis time of the year, not only at work, but also during our offtime. The 628th Air Base Wing Safety Office is here to remindyou of a few things to keep in mind during the holidays.

Cooking. A lot of cooking takes place during the holidayseason; there are many opportunities for burns and scalding.Be mindful of those around you. Keep pot handles turnedaway from the front of the stove and always keep the ovendoor closed. Be especially careful with deep fat fryers andrelated stands, as they are notoriously unstable and prone togrease fires and splatter should unthawed meat be used. Theyshould be located on stable ground in an area outside of gen-eral walkways and not easily accessed by small children.

Decorations. Inspect all electric lights and decorations fordamage or wear. Cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires andloose connections may pose a fire or shock hazard. Always

unplug light strings before replacing bulbs or fuses. Be sure tocheck the rating on extension cords and do not plug in morethan the recommended wattage. Use lights and decorations inaccordance with manufacturer's instructions. Use step stoolsor ladders instead of furniture when hanging decorationsindoors. If you're planning to decorate outdoors, make surethat you use lights and decorations rated for outdoor use.Putting indoor-only products outside in the weather can resultin electric shock and fire hazards. If hanging lights outdoors, reduce the risk of electric shock by passing up metal laddersin favor of ladders made of non-conductive materials likewood or fiberglass-reinforced plastic.

Candles. Always blow out unattended candles and teachchildren to stay away from lit candles or fireplaces.

Travel Safety. Regardless of whichmeans of transportation you choose, the hol-iday season sees a significant increase in alltransportation modes and related mishaps.Vehicle mishaps are the number one killer ofour military family. Below are a few thingsto keep in mind to makes sure you arrive atyour destinations safely.

• Don't drink and drive, and don't letsomeone else drink and drive.

• Wear a seat belt every time you drive, whether you're traveling across town oracross the United States, always buckle up.

• Besides the typical holiday gifts, be sureto have an emergency kit in the vehicle.

• Plan your trip ahead of time - whether you're using a GPSsystem or a traditional map, plan your travel route in advanceand let friends and family know the route and your anticipat-ed time of arrival.

• Before starting your trip, make sure your vehicle is tunedup and in good shape for travel.

• Be flexible with you travel plans. Take plenty of breaksand do not push yourself to meet an unrealistic schedule. Stayfresh and alert when driving. If you get tired, pull off the roadinto a rest area or business and get out of the car for somefresh air.

• Keep your speed down. Give yourself plenty of time anddistance to react to traffic around you.

Tis the Season, the Holiday Season!

The 437th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron grooms some of themost prolific C-17 maintainers and crew chiefs in the Air MobilityCommand. In an incentive to further enhance their mission effi-ciency, a pre-existing identifier, Dedicated Crew Chief, has beenbrought back to the forefront of their culture.

Crew chiefs are responsible for the maintenance and safety of anaircraft. They are technically proficient in most, if not all, aspectsof aircraft maintenance and work with specialized maintainers tokeep aircraft flying and mission capable. Dedicated Crew Chiefsare different because they are assigned to one particular aircraft.

“A Dedicated Crew Chief is expected to know our particular air-craft inside and out,” said Tech. Sgt. Joshua Drakos, 437th AMXScrew chief. “We know the history of the aircraft and recognize pat-terns or nuances that are much more in depth than someone notassigned to the aircraft.”

A DCC is typically a designation given to senior crew chiefs thathave seen a lot, and gained enough experience to recognize issueswhich they have solved before, and mentor other crew chiefs onsolving new issues.

Drakos has been a C-17 aircraft maintainer for 15 years. Duringthat time he has deployed to Al Udeid, Afghanistan, Iraq andTurkey. Drakos was recognized as a DCC during a ceremony June2012. He was awarded a gray flight suit and a specially designedpatch, the identifier for a DCC in the 437th AMXS.

“Every aircraft at Joint Base Charleston has a DCC assigned toit,” said Drakos. “We take a lot of pride in our aircraft. Crewchiefs get a lot of tech training. All of our crew chiefs know theseparation between a good crew chief and a great crew chief is theinitiative to get out there and learn not just your job, but the otherspecialist’s jobs on your plane. The more you know of the biggerpicture, the better you can identify what shape the plane is in. Butultimately, earning the identifier of DCC comes down to experi-ence.”

The 437th AMXS wants the DCC program to assist their currentefforts to mold future DCCs, excellent crew chiefs and maintain-ers.

“We wanted the ceremony and uniforms to revitalize the DCCprogram,” said Master Sgt. William Henke, 437th AMXS SectionChief. “We want to use the old blood to build and train the newblood.”

Identifying and empowering senior technicians came with aresponsibility that the DCCs are definitely willing to accept.

“There are great Airmen in the squadron,” said Drakos. “As annoncommissioned officer, I can look at our Airmen and trulybelieve that I am very lucky to work with these great Airmen.

“The Airmen are definitely the true backbone of this flightline. They are out here getting their hands dirty. My job now is to takeall my knowledge and pass the torch on so they may do the job andthen pass it on to following generations.”

The men and women who mainting the 437th Airlift Wing’s C-17s ensure JB Charleston’s flying mission readiness by workingtogether, to include maintenance specialists, Aircraft TerminalOperations Center personnel, and other supporters of flightlineoperations.

“It’s definitely a big team effort,” said Drakos. “It takes every-one out there, not just AMXS, to make it happen.”

Basketball players from the University of Ohio State,Marquette University and Notre Dame visited Joint BaseCharleston to conduct a basketball clinic, coordinated by thenon-profit organization Hoops from Home and the 628thForce Support Squadron, for military children Nov. 8, 2012,at the JB Charleston - Air Base Fitness Center.

The players were in the Charleston area to participate in thesecond annual Carrier Classic Nov. 9 and were able to sched-ule the clinic between their own team practices.

"I am honored the three schools would partner with Hoopsfrom Home to provide an exceptional clinic for the childrenof JB Charleston," said Sean Franham, Hoops from Homefounder. "There is no question the student-athletes and staffswill make this an exceptional experience for these militarychildren.

Hoops from Home is a non-profit organization providingbasketball camp/clinic experience to the children of militaryfamilies ages nine to 17 across the world. It provides the chil-dren with an opportunity to work with players and coachesand highlights the benefits of team sports, physical activityand commitment. During the camps, children receive coach-ing and training from college, NBA players, and coaches.

"Being a part of something like this is really amazing," saidShelbi Honeycutt, from the women's Ohio State Buckeyesbasketball team. "It is nice knowing that this many kids careabout watching us and learning from us and what we do."

"I was so excited to come here," said Lauren Moore, grand-daughter of Vietnam veteran James Hill. "The basketballplayers are so tall! I thought they would have to duck throughthe door to come in!"

Many of the military children have grown up in one-parenthomes due to deployments. Hoops from Home is designed tohelp these children by providing role models, a person to takethe time to teach a child how to properly shoot and educatehim or her on the art of team building.

"It is really nice to have something like this for us to come

to, especially if someone has a parent deployed," said JosephChavez, son of Tech. Sgt. Lucinda Chavez from the 628thCivil Engineer Squadron. "I really enjoyed being here."

The camp began with the six to seven-foot tall basketballplayers leading the children in warm-up drills similar to thoseperformed during college basketball practices, such as thejump-stop drill, high-knees drill and sprint drills.

Following the warm-ups, participants engaged in individ-ual skill development stations designed to teach and enhancebasketball fundamentals like shooting, rebounding, passingand dribbling.

"It was really nice participating in the Hoops from Homeclinic," said Steve Taylor Jr., from Marquette University. Wedon't get to participate in something like this that often."
