November 6, 2015 Dear Parents and/or Guardians, Earlier this month many families spent time with our teachers setting student-learning goals for the 2015 – 2016 school year. In February, we will take the time to look at our students’ progression toward those goals. Goal setting and achievement data are crucial to long-term student growth. The same can be said about schools. Developing school goals and analyzing achievement data are important steps to take each and every year, and vital in the long-term success of a school. At Prairieview, we spend an entire year looking at and developing school improvement goals. We use national and local assessments as well as best practices to develop our goals. We then design our professional development around those goals to best meet the needs of all students. Our most recent school improvement plan will be shared at an upcoming school board meeting and can be found for everyone to see in this week’s newsletter. Our school’s achievement data is shared many different ways throughout the year. During our winter conference many of our local assessments will be shared with you to highlight student growth. As for the national assessments, the Illinois Interactive Report Card is a wonderful tool for all parents to see how local schools are performing from year to year. You can access our school’s report card at http://illinoisreportcard.com/ . Type in the name of our school and much of our data will be available to you. A new element of the interactive report card is the 5Essentials Survey. This survey is given out every other year to community members and staff, with the most recent survey given last spring. This data goes beyond annual testing and takes a look at how the staff and community feel about the school. I encourage you to look at the results of the survey and share your thoughts by taking the survey the next time it is offered. Finally, the interactive report card will show you the “fast facts” about our school. These facts are unique to every school and highlight the dynamics that comprise our school and student-population. As a result of some of these dynamics, our school has recently become a Title 1 targeted school. This qualifies us to receive a portion of our district’s Title 1 funds to better support students in both reading and math. Please see the attached letter by our Title 1 coordinator, Barbara Zarras, for more details. I encourage everyone to take some time to review our school improvement plan and our interactive report card data. If you have any questions or suggestions for improvement, please do not hesitate to contact me at 847.543.4230 or [email protected] . Sincerely, Vince Murray Prairieview School 103 E. Dear Parents and/or Guardians, Earlier this month many families spent time with our teachers setting student-learning goals for the 2015 – 2016 school year.

You can access our school’s report card at http://illinoisreportcard.com/.

If you have any questions or suggestions for improvement, please do not hesitate to contact me at 847.543.4230 or [email protected].

Sinceramente,

Vince Murray

The character trait for this month is Friendship. Use some of the ideas below to introduce the concept to your child and help them practice what

it means to be a good friend. Discuss the concept of fr iendship with your chi ld “Today we are going to talk about friendship skills and what makes a good friend.” 1. Discuss how to make friends: ask them to play with you, sit by them at lunch, ask to join their activity or game, be helpful and kind, and show interest in them. 2. Discuss qualities that make a good friend: honest and trustworthy, kindness, fun, helpful, supportive, good listener, and having a good sense of humor . Brainstorm pos it ive fr iendship characterist ics What makes a good friend? Friends are or do: 1. Kind and helpful (cheer you up, make you feel good about yourself). 2. Share and have fun together (common interests and enjoying each other’s company). 3. Listen and give advice (help solve problems, support one another). 4. Apologize and forgive each other when they have a conflict or fight. 5. Friends want each other to be happy and successful, not jealous. Role!Playing act iv it ies to pract ice fr iendship Role Plays: 1. Your friend runs out of glue during a craft project. You offer her/him your glue. This would be an example of being kind and sharing. 2. Your friend is sad and is crying. You ask what is wrong and she/he says their grandparent is in the hospital. You listen and tell them you hope they get well soon and will be thinking about them. This is an example of listening and being kind to your friend. 3. You left your friend out of a game because your other friend does not like them. You apologize and say that what you did was wrong and ask for forgiveness. This is an example of apologizing and making up with a friend. 4. Your friend has the lead part in the play that you are doing in class, but you wanted this part for yourself. Tell them congratulations and that you are happy for them. It is okay to admit how bad you wanted the part, but be happy for your friend. This is an example of supporting our friends in good and bad times.

Prairieview PALS Presents

As the winter holidays approach we begin to think about others and how we can help them have a pleasant holiday.

It is not always possible because of the loss of a job, an illness or other reasons, for people to enjoy and afford to buy

presents for their families. At Prairieview School there will be a PAL Tree for Prairieview Families that will not be

able to provide gifts for their families this year. There will be hearts with information for our PV students hanging

on the tree in the front office starting November 18th. A number will identify each heart. Please come in and take some hearts or send a note with your child indicating how many hearts they should bring

home, buy a present, wrap it and return it with the heart on it (no other tags) by December 16th .

*If you have any questions please call Rosa Tellez at 847/ 543-6202.

familiares y a nuestros amigos.

Wear your PJs and bring your blankets and pillows too! Bring your own dinner, snacks and drinks – OR – buy them at Prairieview.

We will have pizza, chips, candy, water and juice for sale!

We will have some Spirit Wear for sale too!

The goal of our PTO Movie Night is to provide a fun, school!appropriate evening for our students and their families. We try and find the newest movies that will be most appealing to the majority of our students. For this event we have chosen Inside Out, which has a rating of PG. It is our belief that parents are the best judge of the content of movies they feel are appropriate for their family as it would be impossible for the PTO or staff to know the individual preferences, fears, or interests of each

of the students. We hope you will be able to join us, but understand if for any reason you choose not to attend. A complete review of the movie can be found at parentpreviews.com.
