It was a year of continued growth and advancement toward our planned goals, punctuated with one big industry surprise. For the past several months, Bryn Mawr Film Institute moviegoers have been greeted with a video announcement from BMFI board member Sir Ben Kingsley about the industry-wide conversion to digital film distribution and projection. In Sir Ben's words, "It's awfully expensive, and it is compulsory." This is an understated, stiff-upper-lip way of saying that the film industry is riding out a self-generated technological tsunami similar to the switch from silent film to talkies. And like that earlier conversion, the switch to digital is likely to sweep away many small, independent theaters. Here is the story: Studios and distributors are phasing out 35 mm prints in favor of Digital Cinema Packages (DCPs), small hard drives that store complete films that must be shown using expensive new digital projectors. This change is a boon for studios, major distributors, and viewers. Prints are expensive to produce and ship, they degrade over time, and a single scratch can damage the print's image quality forever. Viewers appreciate DCPs' pristine picture and sound quality. (Cinephiles can rest assured that BMFI will also continue to show 35 mm prints when possible.) The majority of cinemas will have converted to digital by the end of 2012. Prints of new releases may no longer be available as early as the end of 2013. Moreover, some specialty distributors have taken their 35 mm prints out of circulation already, and more are following suit. The downside is that BMFI must raise an additional $500,000 to install digital projectors in the existing projection booth as well as two in the new addition. So, as the Theater Challenge Campaign nears a successful completion and we get ready to break ground on the long-awaited theater expansion, we work a bit harder and ask our supporters to dig a little deeper in order to realize our shared vision for a state-of-the-art film exhibition and education center for the region. Resulting benefits will include: The competitive advantage to be able to bring our audiences the best possible films; The space to present more films of a wider variety as well as a broader educational program; and The furtherance of a financially sustainable business model with prudent operating costs, increased revenues, and a strengthened balance sheet. The recently negotiated agreement with Main Line Health will allow BMFI to build two new screening rooms on the west side of the theater building. This will make BMFI a more attractive venue to film distributors, improving our negotiating position as BMFI vies for the choicest films to be shown on the earliest dates. Members and patrons will also benefit from the faster turnover of films and the increase in special programming opportunities. Education programs will finally have space to accommodate the growing See·Hear·Feel·Film third grade visual literacy program as well as the popular adult Film Studies courses and discussion groups. In addition, the latter stages of renovation will remedy the limitations of the two existing theaters with: • More comfortable seating; More attractively proportioned auditoriums to enhance the big-screen experience; Energy-efficient heating and cooling systems, and code-compliant fire protection; and Sound and light isolation between theaters and from the lobby, enabling staggered show times. On the practical side, the phased construction/renovation approach provides the following benefits: The theater will not have to close during construction. The two current theaters can remain fully operational during construction of the new theaters and then close for renovation when the new theaters open. Renovation dollars can be used most efficiently. New construction eliminates the expensive engineering required to retrofit the existing building. How can you help? Bryn Mawr Film Institute2011 Report

June 2011Famed writer Fran Lebowitz visits BMFI for a Q&A on Scorsese's documentary about her, Public Speaking

I am very pleased to share with you this summary of Bryn Mawr Film Institute's activities and achievements in 2011. It was a year of continued growth and advancement toward our planned goals, punctuated with one big industry surprise.

For the past several months, Bryn Mawr Film Institute moviegoers have been greeted with a video announcement from BMFI board member Sir Ben Kingsley about the industry-wide conversion to digital fi lm distribution and projection. In Sir Ben's words, "It's awfully expensive, and it is compulsory."

This is an understated, stiff-upper-lip way of saying that the fi lm industry is riding out a self-generated technological tsunami similar to the switch from silent fi lm to talkies. And like that earlier conversion, the switch to digital is likely to sweep away many small, independent theaters.

Here is the story: Studios and distributors are phasing out 35 mm prints in favor of Digital Cinema Packages (DCPs), small hard drives that store complete fi lms that must be shown using expensive new digital projectors. This change is a boon for studios, major distributors, and viewers. Prints are expensive to produce and ship, they degrade over time, and a single scratch can damage the print's image quality forever. Viewers appreciate DCPs' pristine picture and sound quality. (Cinephiles can rest assured that BMFI will also continue to show 35 mm prints when possible.)

The majority of cinemas will have converted to digital by the end of 2012.

So, as the Theater Challenge Campaign nears a successful completion and we get ready to break ground on the long-awaited theater expansion, we work a bit harder and ask our supporters to dig a little deeper in order to realize our shared vision for a state-of-the-art fi lm exhibition and education center for the region.

Theater Challenge Campaign UpdateBryn Mawr Film Institute's Theater Challenge Campaign is the comprehensive fundraising effort to position BMFI for sustainable growth in both facilities and programs.

Resulting benefi ts will include:• The competitive advantage to be able to bring our audiences the best possible fi lms;• The space to present more fi lms of a wider variety as well as a broader educational program; and • The furtherance of a fi nancially sustainable business model with prudent operating costs, increased

revenues, and a strengthened balance sheet.

The recently negotiated agreement with Main Line Health will allow BMFI to build two new screening rooms on the west side of the theater building. This will make BMFI a more attractive venue to fi lm distributors, improving our negotiating position as BMFI vies for the choicest fi lms to be shown on the earliest dates. Members and patrons will also benefi t from the faster turnover of fi lms and the increase in special programming opportunities. Education programs will fi nally have space to accommodate the growing See·Hear·Feel·Film third grade visual literacy program as well as the popular adult Film Studies courses and discussion groups.

In addition, the latter stages of renovation will remedy the limitations of the two existing theaters with:• More comfortable seating;• More attractively proportioned auditoriums to enhance the big-screen experience;• Energy-effi cient heating and cooling systems, and code-compliant fi re protection; and• Sound and light isolation between theaters and from the lobby, enabling staggered show times.

On the practical side, the phased construction/renovation approach provides the following benefi ts:• The theater will not have to close during construction. The two current theaters can remain fully

operational during construction of the new theaters and then close for renovation when the new theaters open.

• Renovation dollars can be used most effi ciently. New construction eliminates the expensive engineering required to retrofi t the existing building.

How can you help?

Use the enclosed envelope, scan the QR code on the left, or go to BrynMawrFilm.org to:• Donate online through our secure web site;• Download a Pledge Form to mail your donation;• Sponsor a theater seat in your name or to honor a friend;• Explore other exciting naming opportunites; and • Learn more about and contribute to Donate for Digital.
