Let me start by offering my condolences, both personal and on behalf of the club, to the family and

friends of Ron Eagle, who was one of those who tragically died in the plane crash last week at

Kathmandu. He had been a stalwart of the Wilmslow Running Club based here and a regular competitor

in the half marathon. He will be sorely missed by all his friends in The Running Club.

Today we welcome Leigh RUFC to the Memorial Ground. Neither club have had an exactly dynamic

start to the season so it will be interesting to see how we fare today. Leigh were formed in 1948 but it

was only in the 1998/99 season that we first played them at first team level. Wilmslow teams had, of

course, played them at other levels, especially the vets. I remember almost drowning under a pile up one

year. Back then their pitch was liable to flooding but on my last visits it was much better. I have been

told the greenkeeper at Wilmslow Golf Club helps out but I don’t know if that is true!

Leigh may be going through a little period of change. Their coach, a former England Rugby League

England international has either left or is on his way to taking over the head coach position at Oldham

RLFC . That’s a tough job! Leigh’s home result against Altrincham Kersal last week showed a heavy

loss against a very mobile and fast side. But we’ll forget about that and remember that the record shows

results between us over the years to be close to even. Last year at home was a heavy loss and the return

fixture at Leigh was a very good Wilmslow win, albeit by a much narrower margin. It’s a hard to call to

make today!

The Wolves themselves have seen a number of changes from last year including the arrival of a new

coaching team. Last year I felt we were a little one-dimensional ( I can be technical if I want!!!!) but this

year, whilst the results are not that good, we are settling down and I feel that we have a plan B and C

( don’t tell the front row that!) to change game patterns when needed. So we shall see!

I will do my usual rant here now, about the lack of lateral thinking at the top level when decisions have to

be made and the consequences that have to be endured at the lower levels. This time it involves the

Vikings. Whilst they did well to win against Liverpool St Helens 2nds, the overall results in the Bateman

league still show a huge imbalance between the ‘paid’ and the ‘amateur ‘ elements. This will end by

Christmas when the league splits into two conferences but by then there’ll be some serious injuries and

some very demotivated players. It would have been so easy to work out much better balanced leagues

based on the league status of the first teams. We have to live with it though and hope for the best!

Ironically, a bit against what I am saying, the Vikings are playing Stockport 2nds today and should win ( I

hope!) because Stockport is going through an internal crisis on funding, which is contributing to the poor

performance of their first team in the higher leagues, leaving a weakened second string. We shall see

what happens!

Wilmslow 3rds continued to entertain us with a good performance against Bowden 2nds and again I

forecast a win – so no pressure then!! Unfortunately the Fourths had no game last week when they could

have put out a really good side. I hope the side is the same for today with a tough, but winnable, match

against Sandbach 4ths. The two Colts sides had entertaining matches last Sunday. The Seniors beating

Stockport and the Juniors just loosing against Stoke. Both sides play really attractive rugby and I look

forward to watching more matches.

Saturday 22ND. September 2012 North 1 West Wilmslow 13 - 39 Liverpool St. Helens The Wolves can have no complaint at this painful defeat at the hands of their old rivals from Liverpool St. Helens. Despite some good periods in both halves for the Wolves, it was ultimately a poor showing from which it seemed that nothing had been learnt from the experience at Rochdale the week before. Coach Brendan Thomas knew exactly what had been wrong at Rochdale and he had drawn up this week’s game plan to deal with the all so evident fault lines. His words though either fell on deaf ears or too many of the players do not yet possess the wherewithal or skills to put the plan into practice. At this level of the game, you just cannot get away with ill directed kicking out of defence which will just be hoovered up by any semi competent back three. Restarts too need to be either short enough to give your pack the chance of getting underneath a hanging ball or long enough to cut down the receiver’s options. Anything else and it’s the perfect gift for the receiving side to set up another attack. Consequently, the Wolves found themselves 13 – 25 adrift after fifty minutes and started to try and play frantic catch up rugby, during which they made matters worse by readily coughing up the ball when they had it in the tackle and in the pass. Liverpool St. Helens have in recent seasons been close to winning promotion but their sources say that this season’s team doesn’t look just as strong as its immediate predecessors and they don’t think they’ll be con-tenders this season. Nevertheless a glance at their team sheet showed that they still had plenty of experi-enced players who have been round the block several times and know exactly what to do when the ball comes their way. The Cunliffes, Greg Smith, Ian Stanley, Matt Gaines, Phil Kearns, Dave Westhead and others will take full advantage of any loose play coming their way. As the Wilmslow team quickly squandered their possession in the last half hour so the LSH side just patiently played the ball through the phases in the Wilmslow half, eventually wearing down the home sides defences. For the first twenty minutes, the Wolves had arguably just shaded events. There had been several promising breaks featuring Craig Cooper, Ben Day and Mike Black, only for the ball to be lost in over hasty risky pass-ing. The visitors then got into their stride with some patient play, recycling the ball across the field several times before eventually an overlap was created on their left for Matty Cunliffe who sprinted away before slip-ping an inside scoring pass to fly half Greg Smith. Paul McLindon kicked a good conversion from far out on the left. From the restart, LSH quickly worked their way back into the Wolves twenty two and when a clearing kick failed to find touch on the LSH right, the arch poacher Ian Stanley was on hand to score their second. If there’s one player in this league that you don’t want to give a free ball to, it’s Ian Stanley. Throughout, the Wolves lineout was the most effective part of their game and when they stole the ball against the throw for a third time, hope was briefly raised when Craig Cooper burst through the middle to release the supporting Richard Hughes, who scored close to the posts. Unfortunately, the Wolves were without a recognised kicker, it was one of those days, and the conversion went begging as did several other very kickable opportunities. If they’d all have been taken, then the scores could have been level shortly after

half time and the whole dynamic of the game might have been very different. As it was, McLindon wasn’t long landing a simple penalty to the LSH score on the half hour but the Wolves had further opportunities in a good passage of play. Winger Sam Cutts made a couple of good breaks, there was a touch of genuine class from Hughes, who then slipped on the turf at the critical moment and a couple of knock ons at the base of the scrum in good attacking positions. All they had to show for this was a penalty from Jack Harrison just before half time, when just a bit more composure on the ball might have produced so much more. Another inaccurate clearing kick was then snaffled up by the

LSH forwards before their back line released Matt Cunliffe for a try on the left. The Wolves started the second half with fierce intent, going close a couple of times before Ben Day deserv-edly scored. The game was still winnable but the conversion was missed and within a minute or so, the ball was kicked to Matt Cunliffe, who showed his thanks by chipping the defence, picking up the loose ball as it squirted around before handing it on to McLindon for the defining score. Frankly the wheels now just fell off the Wilmslow wagon and LSH had half an hour to round off the game with two more converted tries from Matt Gaines and that man Stanley again. For the third week in succession, the Wolves had gone awol in the final thirty minutes and paid by losing three perfectly winnable games.

On the coach to Kirkby Lonsdale

Mike Blackett, alias Pudsey, was

talking about his role as team

manager and how he was going about

the task. He stated that he was sure

that the Vikings would be

competitive this weekend, not least

because they were putting out a full

side but it was also a stronger looking

one. They duly put the batterings

received from Preston GH and Vale

behind them to record their first ever

Bateman league win by 29-15 against

LSH.

The point that Pudsey was making

was that there was no shortage of

decent players coming out of the

Wilmslow junior and colts sections,

who would play for the senior section

if asked to but that it took a bit of

management, organisational effort

and intelligent networking to make it

possible for them to do so, especially

when they leave the immediate

locality to go to college or university.

It’s a vital painstaking task that needs

a person with problem solving skills,

patience, persistence and above all a

`can do, will do’ positive attitude so

it was gratifying to hear that Pudsey

has grabbed the initiative to make

this happen.

Let’s hope that Pudsey’s intervention

heralds better days for the Vikings

and that they can now start

competing more effectively against

the top Bateman sides.

Saturday 29th. September 2012 North 1 West Kirkby Lonsdale 5 – 29 Wilmslow The Wolves three match losing sequence ended with this decisive win at Kirkby Lonsdale’s picturesque ground, high up on the edge of the Dales. They scored four tries and a penalty to lead 0 – 29 at half time, eventually consigning their hosts to a fourth defeat from five league outings and to the nether regions of the league. There was no sign of any anxiety, as there could have been, from the Wolves as they set about their afternoon’s work. They had worked hard in training on the preceding Thursday night to iron out some of the obvious faults in their recent play and here in the first half, they were to enjoy the benefit of a slope and a soft following wind. The biggest difference though in a much improved showing was the return of the birthday boy Bob MacCallum from injury to the No.10 spot. That’s not to say that he put in a faultless performance, the timing of some of his passes to his centres did them no favours at all, but he does possess the ability to kick the ball to where it needs to go, to kick penalty goals and conversions when they matter and to demonstrate decent game management skills. Consequently his contribution steadied the side at the time they most needed it. There was also a promising debut from young Ollie Wilkinson, a product of the club’s junior section, at full back and a fine half game cameo from Andy Vassell, whose knowledge, skill and enthusiasm for the nefarious arts involved in front row play, rucking and mauling should not be under rated. Late on, we also saw the last of the Longmore conveyor belt make his debut when Ronan came on at scrum half. Throughout the game, the side defending against the slope were deemed by referee Bennett to be consistently infringing. The Wolves were the beneficiaries in the first half as MacCallum soon found his range to plant the ball close to the Kirkby line. Within five minutes the Wolves had moved the ball right from a lineout making an easy overlap for Ben Day on the right wing to open the scoring. MacCallum kicked an awkward looking conversion. Within another two minutes MacCallum had found the same lineout spot with his boot and when Kirkby came up off side, he took due retribution. Kirkby now carelessly failed to kick the ball the requisite ten metres from the restart and from the ensuing scrum, the Wolves patiently played the ball until left winger Sam Cutts was put clear. When he was hauled down, centre Craig Cooper was at hand to take the pass and in turn he made the ball available to hooker Alex Donaldson who crossed for the score. Fifteen minutes played and fifteen points already on the board. After a further ten minutes during which Kirkby had dominated possession and field position, a series of penalties for position from MacCallum and a yellow card for the Kirkby No. 4 Hughes, set up a catch and drive from which Vassell scored after 30 minutes. It was all the Wolves now as the half moved to its closing moments. Kirkby were forced to lose possession from a defensive scrum under their posts and another flowing handling move saw Cutts come off his wing to apply the coup de grace in the right hand corner, from where MacCallum converted. A fifth try could easily have followed in the last play of the period.

Whatever was said at half time, it had the effect of galvanising the home side into action and they deservedly won the second half with a try from second row, Sam Dowker , after sixty five minutes. Initially, the Wolves had started the half where they had finished the first but when they lost possession Kirkby started playing first up route one rugby. There was nothing pretty about it but forwards and backs alike relentlessly hammered at the Wilmslow defences. Despite

further yellow cards, one for Kirkby and one for Wilmslow’s Cooper, the force was now with them as a combination of their driving play and Mr. Bennett’s whistle drove the Wolves back. They were forced to scramble as their play became sloppy and clearing kicks were missed. When the Wolves did have the ball, they seemed to forget that they were over twenty points to the good as they tried to play cavalier rugby instead of slowing the game down and hanging on to the ball. Nevertheless, they weathered the storm and were unlucky to have late touch downs from Richard Hughes and MacCallum disallowed. Any win on the road in this league though is a good one. It was a long time since the Wolves had won by over twenty points away from home and they can now prepare for the visit of Leigh next weekend with confidence.

September Senior Colts 15 -13 Stockport Junior Colts 10 -17 Stoke on Trent Who would have thought it that during the summer the talk was all about not being able to raise a senior colts side this season and here they are, second in the table. Somewhere along the line resolve must have stiffened and despite the loss of Westaway and Hughes new faces have emerged, not least thanks to Garret Coulson, formerly coach at AK, who recognising that he wasn’t going to be able to raise a side this season brought his remaining boys to Wilmslow. They seem to have gelled into a winning team but then they still have Harry Patch to call on. The maverick colt scored twice against a Sandbach side, which possibly wasn’t at full strength, and he is now also appearing with distinction on the Vikings. No-one will be surprised if he graduates to the Wolves before the end of the season. Others to look out for include the always busy Wilf Noden, Rohan Longmore and colts skipper Robert Taylor but it takes more than four to make a winning team. Mark Shotton reports that it was heroic stuff last weekend against Stockport. Over the years both sides have had their moments. Two years ago Stockport, then U16s, stuck eleven tries past Wilmslow but last season Stockport, still a very good side, were done over by a Wilmslow junior colts side led by Wilf Noden. Here were two teams, who knew all about each other, with a healthy rivalry. On the day, Stockport enjoyed more possession and more field position but they came up against the Wilmslow back row and the rest of the Wilmslow team who just tackled and tackled and disrupted and never stopped knocking their opponents back. Harry Patch again and Paddy Wheeler, captain for the day, were the try scorers. Wilf Noden kicked the penalty and conversion. Tom Hamilton, Conor McMurdock, Nathan Budd, Matthew Burgess, Nick Foster, Jon Coulson and Nathan Williams all stood out in a performance, which by all accounts was a win forged from ‘character’ against a very good Stockport side.

I was watching a T.V.

programme I had

recorded earlier in the

year; a documentary

about Paul Simon’s trip

in 1985 to record, in my

view, one of the great

C.D.’s, “Gracelands”. It

told of the animosity he

encountered from the

ANC because of the

cultural and sporting

boycott of South Africa and his return trip earlier this year

to see if he was still unwelcome. He was not, of course

and the musicians he played with then were all delighted

to see him again.

Wilmslow too, made the trip in 1985. We had played a

touring team, The Tuskers, from Kenya, a few years

earlier and it was decided to accept their invitation to

return there to celebrate our Centenary. The Kenyan teams

were very keen to have us, but the powers that be said that,

because England had played cricket in South Africa,

Wilmslow were not welcome in Kenya. So we went to

South Africa instead.

There were some opponents to our trip and several letters

denouncing us in the Press but the Rugby Union gave us

permission and the South Africans were obviously very

keen for us to go, so we did. I suspect I was not the only

one in the party who was completely unaware of the

reality of Apartheid; a real innocent abroad.

We played in Durban, Humansdorp (near Port Elizabeth),

Cape Town, Stellenbosch University, the H.Q. of South

African rugby, and Johannesburg; winning one game and

losing four. It wasn’t until we arrived in Humansdorp – a

farming community on the coast- that I first noticed the

inequality of the blacks and whites. We called in to an off-

licence to buy some beer and discovered that there was

one counter, one stock of booze, but two entrances, one for

each colour. After that, the inequalities became more

obvious and, although I never felt threatened, I was

definitely uncomfortable in Johannesburg. The more so

when our host, (we were not in an hotel), showed us his

stock of guns, which included machine guns. “I’m ready

for them”, he said. I just hoped “they” didn’t come that

weekend.

Nevertheless, we all enjoyed the trip enormously. The

rand was 18 to the pound, we were treated royally

everywhere we went and we saw a marvellous Country;

now, of course, a popular destination for folks tired of the

winter weather here. Many of us went back with the

Eagles on a Millennium tour to Cape Town and some of us

were photographed in the bar at Stellenbosch, with the

Wilmslow shield on display. There are many stories to tell

about both trips, but what goes on tour stays on tour and,

apart from dear old Vaudrey Middleton, all the

participants are still alive!

More on Macc The tea time saga continued with a thoughtful piece by an anonymous contributor to the Sandbach match programme on 15th. September. The writer believes that the principle of providing hospitality was core to the development of the game. It led to the development of the clubhouse, unlike in soccer, for example,’ which enabled hospitality to be provided to visiting sides. It now seems that many members at Macc also subscribe to the same view and consequently the latest missive from the Macc committee states that ‘team teas’ will be reinstated and funded by an increase in playing membership subscriptions to approximately the same level as applies to this club.

When a club has to do away with something so fundamental to the traditions of the game, our Sandbach correspondent asks, you have to ask whether that club is going in the right direction. Ambition to play at the highest level possible is perfectly acceptable but is it acceptable when it starts to impact negatively on the basics of what a rugby club is all about. In the worst cases, ambition has led and continues to lead to the demise and near demise of clubs. Just look at the fate of Rugby Lions as the latest example. He clearly subscribes to the values of this club when he talks about solvency and sustainability, investment in coaching, infrastructure and facilities for all ages and genders, value to its local community and, yes, hospitality as well. Macc teams will continue to be fed and watered at Sandbach. In my view, his opinions reinforce the comments made in this magazine a fortnight ago that the fundamental differences between professionalism and amateurism

make the two uncomfortable bedfellows. The question still remains though where the dividing line between the two actually is. More on Professionalism Many of you will have read a recent article in The Telegraph on the dire state of rugby union in the North. You could easily have gained the impression from Mick Cleary that rugby union in the north was chronically ill ‘in a football obsessed area’ and you probably would have if you live south of Birmingham. In fact he was really equating the fortunes of Sale Sharks, Newcastle Falcons and others to become viable professional sides to the fortunes of the game as a whole. Firstly, the area is no more football obsessed than any other region of the country and secondly he doesn’t appear to consider the numbers that also play rugby league. If you add the total playing both codes of rugby together, you would get a very different picture of rugby’s popularity. Even in the heartlands of rugby league along the M62 corridor and in Cumbria, there are flourishing rugby union clubs. Liverpool St. Helens, Wigan, Widnes, Leigh, Carlisle and Penrith all prosper in rugby league dominated areas. In Cheshire, there is a rugby union club, sometimes more than one, in just about every town I can think of. Add to this the success in recent years of Cheshire schools from Sandbach, Lymm and indeed Wilmslow in national rugby union schools cup competitions and you could hardly say that the game is in its death throws. The problem for rugby union is not a lack of popularity but that it has never been a big spectator attraction in the region, unlike the upper echelons of rugby league. TV money is all very well for the leading clubs but how anyone else can run a viable professional rugby union side without sufficient numbers paying to come through the gate to watch is beyond me. Maybe there is a case after all for ring fencing the professional game

L E I G H R U F C January’s meeting with Leigh at their place came at the end of a four week break for Christmas and weather. As usual in January it was muddy on the Leigh touchline and there was a stiff north westerly wind which favoured Wilmslow in the first half and Leigh in the second. but neither side were able to take advantage of the elements. Nevertheless it was a rewarding occasion for those of us who made the trip. It signalled the Wolves first away win of the season by 5 - 13. True, Leigh were minus several of their leading lights but it was a far better Wilmslow performance on the road than we’d seen for a long time and heralded a decent enough run in with home wins against Widnes and LSH to come.

Once again the contrasting styles of Leigh and Wilmslow rugby were apparent to all as the home side picked and drove doing what they were best at but on this occasion they came up against a resolute Wilmslow defence which didn’t miss a tackle all afternoon. Wilmslow always sought to put some width on the ball to create space for their runners but to concentrate on delivering simple relatively short passes, which would go to hand. Against the wind, Peter Ince opened the scoring after seven minutes with a close range try for Leigh to which the Wolves immediately responded by forcing a turnover at the restart, which MacCallum swung to his right. The ball was held up on the Leigh line but when it was dug out Dan Wright crashed over. Further chances went begging and at half time the smart money was on Leigh but against

all the odds, the Wilmslow pack took control, Lewis McKay seemed to be everywhere at once, the home side got themselves into a mess and MacCallum slotted two short range penalties to settle the matter. It was some consolation for the autumnal hiding that Leigh had dished out here when they scored 45 points against a very poor Wolves performance. It was one of those days when everything they did just went their way. Passes went to hand, their pick and drive found consistent gaps in the Wolves defence and they made everything look so easy. They looked every bit championship contenders on the day but it didn’t work out like that over the season. They were never in any real danger of going down but mathematically it was a possibility on the penultimate weekend of the season. But that was also the case for the Wolves and another four teams. This time round, Leigh have only enjoyed a single win from their first five games, a 29-14 home win three weeks ago against Fleetwood. Last week, they were well beaten at home by Altrincham Kersal, who with 96 points in their last two games look to have found some form, and the week before they had found it hard going at Carlisle. Today though is another day and the Wolves will be well advised to be on their guard. The Woods, Calvin Crompton, Adam Dyson, Ryan McKinstry, Tom Forshaw and others have all caused the Wolves plenty of grief in recent seasons and we know what they’re capable of if they’re allowed to settle.

Saturday 22nd. September Altrincham Kersal 53-0 Kirkby Lonsdale AK scored nine tries in this slaughter. First half tries from Louis Taylor (2), JP Singleton, and James O’Rourke, plus 2 penalties and 3 conversions from Rob Holloway gave AK a 32– 0 lead at half time. Louis Taylor completed his half trick early in the second half and a further try from Steve Richardson extended AK’s lead to 46–0. Kirkby though never gave up trying but AK’s defence was resolute throughout the game and a further try from JP Singleton and Rob Holloway’s 6th conversion from 7 attempts gave AK a convincing 53 points win. Anselmians 42-25 Widnes The surprise of the weekend was clearly Anselmians unexpected demolition job on Widnes. They were undoubtedly indebted to Simon Mason, who landed seven panalties and three conversions for a personal tally of twenty seven points but it was the effort from the Anselmian forwards that forced Widnes to concede the penalties within Mason’s range that led to this success. Widnes equalled the Anselmian try count but they didn’t a kicker of mason’s calibre and paid the price. What other side can you think of that also lost out the same weekend because it didn’t have a kicker? Carlisle 46-5 Leigh Carlisle maintained the meanest defence in the league with this win. Full back Paul Lancaster helped himself to four tries, Lee Askew and Tom Graham scored the other two and Glen Weightman got the remaining points with his boot. Ryan McKinstry scored a second half consolation for a well beaten Leigh. Fleetwood 29-12 Manchester Fleetwood conceded weight to their Manchester visitors but were always quicker and more dangerous on the ball and they won plenty of possession. Centre Adam Crisp scored their first try, mark Turnpenny the second and Mark Stephenson the third to put the home side 22-0 ahead at the break. Tom Evans scored the fourth immediately after the break. In the last quarter, Manchester scored twice. Vale of Lune 48-10 Rochdale Stuart Vernon was at his lyrical best in describing Vale’s table topping win against Rochdale. Unlike the early frost in Lancaster, there was nothing zub zero, he wrote, about Vale’s bountiful seven try harvest of points, displaying sharpness, speed of thought and artistic invention. Most of the Vale players seemed to catch his eye but it was prop Andrew Garnett who was awarded the man of the match award. Wirral 13-16 Sale Once again, it was the late late show from Sale with a last minute drop goal from Ronan O’Brien earning them the spoils. Up to then, they had struggled to break down a resilient Wirral side, which managed to overcome a series of disruptive injuries throughout the game. On a glorious afternoon Craig Harvey kicked two penalties and the conversion of James Annetts well crafted second half try. Wirral then had what could have been the match winning try from Jason Green ruled out by the Manchester Society referee for being held up. In response, Sale had also scored two penalties through Andy Rowley and an equalising try from Danny Waddy after 67 minutes. It was the Sale pack though that kept the pressure up in the last quarter to set up O’Brien’s last second intervention. Saturday 29th. September Leigh 6 – 43 Altrincham Kersal Kersal were always in control at Round Ash Park. Playing into the first half wind they scored two tries through Louis Taylor and John Geddis to turn round 17—6 ahead and then added three more through Sam Momncur, Sean Clayton and and Tony O’Connor. Liverpool St. Helens 18– 26 Vale of Lune Controversy ruled the day at Moss Lane. LSH had just extended their lead to 18-10 when a not particularly looking dangerous kick was hoisted by Vale, which LSH full back Neil Hull looked to be back to touch down over the line. The referee however saw it differently and ruled the ball to still be alive so allowing a try for Vale’s James Curran. One or more LSH players then made their opinions known to the referee who gave Vale’s James Moore a penalty from half way, which he landed. Playing into the wind, LSH just couldn’t get back into the game and two further Moore penalties settled it. Manchester 5 – 38 Carlisle Carlisle crossed the Manchester line six times. Paul Lancaster three times, Glen Weightman twice and Paul Halliday once. Late in the game Manchester got their solitary score. Reports say, however, that Manchester deserved far more from the game than they got. They had their chances, played aggressively and were no pushover. On another day the score could have been much tighter. Rochdale 53 – 10 Anselmians Half backs Dom Serridge and Rob Neave put on an excellent tactical display, apparently knowing exactly when to bring their backs and forwards into play. Anselmians had no answer to the variety produced by Rochdale as they ran in seven tries. Sale 80– 0 Fleetwood Twelve tries without reply says it all. Fleetwood never gave up but were simply outclassed. Widnes 25– 21 Wirral This always looked like one that would go to the wire. In the event Widnes managed four tries, one of them a penalty try to which Wirral responded with three of their own, all converted by Craig Harvey. At the end Wirral were pounding the Widnes line. The home side were yellow carded down to 13 players and maybe the visitors should have snatched it but they didn’t.
