1.1 Lesson – Evaluating Algebraic Expressions
Essential Question p. 2How can you write and evaluate an expression
that represents a real-life problem?
A numerical expression contains only numbers and operations.
An algebraic expression contains numbers, operations, and one or more variables. Here are some examples.
o Numerical Expression:15 + 9 · 3
o Algebraic Expression:45 ÷ p − q
To evaluate an algebraic expression, substitute a number for each variable. Then use the order of operations to find the value of the numerical expression.
