It is also another indication that Nelson City Council sees no future for Rocks Rd as a major arterial road and sees it rather as a desti- nation with plans for a cycleway and pedestrian boulevard. New Zealand Transport Agen- cy allocated roading funding, or ‘R funding’, to councils several years ago with the money to be spent on local roading pro- jects. But only those projects that met its standard of need. Tasman District Council spent their allocation on the Ruby Bay Bypass. Nelson City Council was al- located $22 million and had hoped to spend it on the Southern Arterial Link from St Vincent St to Wakatu Drive. However, a report into the pro- posed road this year showed demand was not great enough for the region’s R funding to be accessed. A decision on where Nelson will spend its money needs to be made by March next year and the Regional Transport Committee has made the deci- sion to spend part of it, around $6 million, on a pedestrian boulevard and cycleway on Rocks Rd. The Masked Parade set the Nelson Arts Festival off with a display of creativity, cel-ebrating the theme Playful Pacifica in cos-tumes and masks ranging from elaborate flights of Tui to a giant papier mache world teacup.Central School won the Supreme Group Award with their whole school in mask and costume divided into sections of earth, water, fire and air.The judges, Annabel Norman, Kath Bee, Darryl Frost and Gemma Laing say Cen-tral stood out for the overall impact of their entry. “It was striking, it fitted really well with the theme. It was a very power-ful entry that had taken a lot of effort and it was great to see the whole school in-volved,” says Annabel. Long time Masked Parade entrant Faye Wulff won the Supreme Individual Mask with an intricate blue papier mache crea-tion; the Supreme Family Mask award went

to the Lowe family with their brightly coloured en-try, Super Star Fish. Nelson City Council fes-tival director Sophie Kelly says there had been an excellent response from the vast majority of young people who stayed on after the parade to party to spe-cial guests Midnight Youth and Knives at Noon, who appeared courtesy of the Real New Zealand Festival and the New Zealand Mu-sic Commission. “We had put in a lot of effort, going out and talking to assemblies with the safe partying message, and it paid off,” she says. “I’d like to thank the young people and the police, HYPE GS, our security team, am-bulance staff and all the others who helped

the event to run smoothly.”Nelson Police say the crowd at the carni-vale was generally well behaved. Police had to deal with a number of alcohol-related issues, mainly with teenagers.

Senior sergeant Dave Gibson says the number of youths who were intoxicat-ed was disappointing. “Overall we were pleased with the event and the behaviour of those attending, but as always, it’s a little disappointing when a few individuals push the boundaries and disrupt others.”The sound and light installation, Piki Mai, received a rapt response, even though it could not be seen to best effect for the crowds on the Church Steps where the images were projected. The imagery in-cluded war planes appearing to dive into the crowd from the steps, flames that en-gulfed the trees as Nelson’s first cathedral was burnt down and a rocket ship projec-tion that made the cathedral tower appear to blast off. Piki Mai will play every night of the festival from dark until late, through to October 24. For more photos of the Masked Parade visit Nelson Weekly’s Facebook page.

pedestrian boulevard and cycleway,” he says.Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio also backs the boule-vard plan and came out firing at any suggestion that NZTA would try to stop it. “NZTA, in my view, will come to realise, and will be given some strong instruction and direction that we as a community are not going to be bul-lied by them and we will spend our community’s $22 million. “We will build our pedestrian boulevard along Rocks Rd as that is what our community wants, and as long as our community wants that, they are on notice for a considerable confrontation come March or April unless they [NZTA] con-cede earlier,” he says.

Aldo says the future of heavy traffic in Nelson is the Southern Arterial Rd, not Rocks Rd. “It is our community and the sooner NZTA realise there is no future for unsafe, heavy vehicles on Rocks Rd the better. The future alternate route for heavy traffic has already been decided by the council [and] by the community. For them to insist on continuing to spend millions of tax payers’ dol-lars on long-term unsustainable engineering so-lutions on a roading network, for the purpose of getting heavy traffic in an unsafe manner along our iconic scenic waterfront, when an independ-ent international engineering specialist has con-demned it, is incredibly short sighted, irrespon-sible and a wasteful misuse of tax payers money.”Other projects for the remaining $16 million have not yet been finalised, says Aldo.

An All Black cap presented to a Nelson farm-er in 1931 has found its way home, almost 40 years after his family thought it had been lost. Former All Black and Nelson College stu-dent Donald Max, was handed the cap after his first test match against Australia in 1931. When he died in 1972 his family distributed his All Blacks memorabilia, with the cap go-ing to one of his two sons, Doug, who lived in the North Island. Then, tragically, Doug died just five years af-ter his father, in 1977, leaving the cap in the possession of his wife. The couple did not have any children and the widow remarried, holding onto the All Black cap. The Max family did not know Doug had the cap and assumed it had gone missing, until this year, when his former wife passed away. Her second family, not having any relation-ship with Donald Max, tracked down his 87 year-old son Gordon, who still lives in Brightwater, and handed it back to the fam-ily.Gordon says it’s good to have his dad’s cap back where it belongs – for his family to cherish it and prolong the legacy left by the three-test All Black. “It means a lot, not so much for me, but for the family, because with all due respect to the present All Blacks, there was far more aura with the All Blacks back in the day,” says a thrilled Gordon.Donald, a towering lock, played eight match-es for the All Blacks and debuted against Australia in 1931. His first game was the fi-nal match that featured a scrum formation of 2-3-2.

He was used as a blind-side flanker after that and scored one test try, worth three points. Back then, there were no reserves, only “emergency players”, that could only come on to the field if a doctor was present to sign a certificate for the injured player.Gordon was six years-old at the time his fa-ther debuted in the black jersey, but he re-members it like it was yesterday. “After the football on the Saturday we had to light the copper and boil all the gear,” he says. “He had a lot of bandages and part of my job was, once the bandages had washed and dried, I would throw it out in front of me and roll them up for him.”He also remembers watching his dad head off to Nelson rep practice at Trafalgar Park on his Harley Davidson motorbike and use the shed outside for catch-ing practice with his broth-er.“We had this big shed and he would practice his kicks by kicking over it.” Donald broke his leg play-ing against Australia in 1934, which ended his first class career. He then made the tran-sition to refereeing and then on to administration where he became the pres-ident of the New Zealand Rugby Union in 1949. Donald was the fourth inductee in the Nelson Sports Hall of Fame.

Win meal, VIP seats for big eventWin a family meal in one of Nel-son’s top restaurants and then get escorted to seats in prime position to look at the space be-tween ANZ bank and the Nel-son Provincial Museum (see the story to your left for more information on what will be in the space). The meal will be served on Sun-

day, October 23, before a major sporting event. To win this incredible prize, sim-ply take a photo of your family showing their support for New Zealand and send it to Nelson Weekly. The best photograph will win a two-course meal and round of drinks at Ford’s Res-taurant. Seats will then be saved

amongst the thousands of peo-ple that are expected to crowd into Trafalgar St at the time.To win the prize, send a photo of your family showing their support for New Zealand, by 5pm Friday, to editorial@nelson weekly.co.nz.The winner will be announced in next week’s Nelson Weekly.

Thousands expected for Nelson FanzoneNelson’s upper Trafalgar St is pre-paring to party this weekend as the city’s Fanzone goes up ahead of the Rugby World Cup semi-finals.A massive 20 foot by 10 foot screen mounted on top of a ship-ping container, guaranteeing a great view from all angles, will show both semi-finals and the fi-nal of the cup and will be erected between the Nelson Provincial Museum and ANZ Bank, pro-jecting towards the Cathedral. It is expected thousands of people will pour into the Fanzone for the games – especially Sunday’s game featuring the All Blacks and Australia. The Fanzones in Wel-lington have proved so popular that they have been extended to include the semi-finals and the fi-nal, and organisers expect locals and visitors to embrace the Fan-zone set up in Nelson too. “Hav-ing seen such a great turnout at each of our live games at Trafal-gar Park, the Fanzones offer an opportunity to keep that buzz alive,” says Susan Coleman, RWC 2011 Nelson regional director. “It is the next best thing to being at a live game is to be amongst thou-

sands of other supporters.”A selection of great local bands has been lined up to provide free pre-match entertainment from 6pm. DJ True Grit and The Peas-ants will wow the crowd on Sat-urday 15 October, followed by Comrade Z and The Immigrants on Sunday 16 October and Wick-ed Draw and Pacha Atma for the final on Sunday 23 October. The Twisty Twinz and Body in Space will top off the street entertain-ment. The rugby action begins with kick off at 9.00pm each evening.Prior to the rugby there is plenty of time to enjoy a meal or drinks in one of the local cafes, restau-rants and bars lining Trafalgar St. Fans can watch the game from outside one of the cafés or bars lining Trafalgar St, or find a spot inside the family-friendly envi-ronment of the Fanzone where a combination of seating and standing space will be on offer. Alcohol is not allowed inside the Fanzone, says Susan. The Fanzones close on final whis-tle, and Late Buses will be availa-ble to enable a safe journey home for fans.

NEWS IN BRIEFCHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL: For the fourth year, Nelson Cathedral is planning a festival of Christmas trees to share with the people of Nelson. In the past three years this event has been very popular with the people of Nelson and the Cathedral wish to share the joy with them again. The trees on display were set up by other church groups, firms, sports groups and many other organisations who wished to share their theme in this wonderful event. If any group would like to participateit is not too late and they may contact the Ca-thedral office 548 1008 or email [email protected] for an entry form.

COSTLY THEFT: A $50,000 diamond ring was stolen from a Britania Heights home, say its owners. Nelson police are investigating the theft after an aledged offender climbed through an open widow to get the jewel.

GLASS ATTACK: A horrific bottle attack in a Nelson nightclub left a 21 year-old man get-ting glass pulled from his face in Nelson Hos-pital on Saturday morning. The victim was bashed in the face with a full glass beer bottle in one of the worst attacks in a city bar for some time, say police.Police are following “positive” lines of enquiry and expect it to be resolved quickly. The of-fender is understood to be an ex-Nelson man.

OKTOBERFEST: Nelson bar and restaurant Kraut’s is hosting its second authentic Ger-man OktoBeerfest. The two-weekend, four-day festival is a chance to honour the tradi-tions, entertainment and distinctive food and beverages that personify the worlds largest fair, the Munich Oktoberfest. Admission is free, but it’s essential to purchase a $12 food and beverage voucher to book a seat.

Old glasses see new benefit Matthews eyewear CEO Philip Matthews with Yvonne Kleiven and Mary Goodman of the Lioness Club of Nel-son with some of the donated eyewear that will be sent to the Pacific. Photo: Andrew Board.

Nelson’s used glasses are finding a second use, thanks to a local club and optometrist. The Lioness Club of Nelson and Mat-thews Eyewear have teamed up to collect disused eyewear before test-ing them and then sending them to some of the Pacific’s poorest coun-

tries. There, volunteers fit the glasses with locals.Lioness Club of Nelson president Yvonne Kleiven says the project is extremely worthwhile and helps hundreds of people to see again. The glasses can be donated to any Matthews Eyewear shop in the top

of the South and lower North Island. Matthews CEO Philip Matthew says it is a wonderful project for his busi-ness to be involved in. “We’ve been doing this for 20 years and as a group collect around 3000 a year and we are hugely grateful for those who donate glasses.”

Isel Park blooms

The Neighbours family enjoys a walk in the park: Mum Aimee holds Elias, Chris along with Bianca and Sienna in front. Photo: Jonathan McKeown.

Isel Park was a blooming good place to be on Sunday, says festival goers, with the sun shining on the annual Isel in Bloom festival.Set in four hectares of gar-dens and woodland park around Nelson’s historic Isel House, Isel in Bloom marks the re-opening of the house and gardens and is Nelson’s traditional herald of Spring. There was a distinct herit-

age theme with ‘old English’ themes in music, fare and games.People reclined in the sun to listen to mistrals in the afternoon once the excite-ment of the nail driving, bonnet trimming and musi-cal chairs was passed. Oth-ers enjoyed a leisurely stroll as the sound of the Nelson City Brass Band boomed through the bloom.

A Nelson retail manager has won a national award, as the seasons best manager.Cindy Crowther has been with the Witchery store in Fashion Island since it opened nearly four years ago and last week she, along with the store, was recognised nationally. Cindy describes the three team members as a “tight-knit bunch of people”. You would have to be to win the ‘Team Culture’ award for the 21 Witchery stores nation-wide for Autum/Winter 2011, she says.Cindy won ‘Store Manager’ of the season judged by a combination of factors including customer feedback and satisfaction as well as sales. Although Cindy knew her team was friend-ly and fashion forward, the store manager

award was unexpected. “I’m very happy with the award but I am a bit shell-shocked really.”News of the accolades rapidly spread through Fashion Island, an aspect of the recognition Cindy was a little embarrassed by, but as soon as Fashion Island centre manager Susan Matz found out, she knew it was an achieve-ment that should be celebrated. “We are all very proud of her so it was im-portant to celebrate that success.”There is no underestimating the value of a strong team culture and Susan says the store’s clients would believe the national recogni-tion was well deserved. “Cindy and her team are a fabulous partner-ship in the store and they’ve been there right from day one. They have built up a good rap-port with existing customers and they are just excellent with assisting new customers.”

A few dozen fire fighters were all ac-tion at the A & P Showgrounds on the weekend for the annual Waterway Challenge.Teams came to compete and hone their drills, but the speed and accu-racy gained in competition also helps to save lives. “The Waterway Chal-lenge involves all the skills you use as firefighter being run in a time-based competition, setting up hoses and knocking down targets,” says Craig Piner, Nelson Marlborough provin-cial association secretary. It was a chance for the regions vol-unteers to test their skills in a bit of friendly competition. “You would think it might have been a bit of fun and people do enjoy it, but the com-petition does get quite serious,” Craig says. Takaka took out the overall honors.

What’s on at your local • During this first week of the school holidays “Elgregoe – the magician” is performing free shows twice daily – 11.00am and 1.00pm. Come along and enjoy the remaining shows. Elgregoe is performing until Friday 14 October.

• Over the coming weeks there are a number of changes in retailers and in the lead up to Christ-mas a number of temporary traders will be in the mall to compliment the existing 70 stores.

• Christmas decorations are planned to be going up during the first weekend of November and preparations are well underway for Richmond Mall’s much anticipated Christmas promotions. With only 10 weeks to Christmas – thoughts shift to Santa Parade, A and P show and the last term of school for the year.

• With the huge influx of visitors to the region over the past few weeks and the “celebration of the oval ball” reaching a climax – the region has been buzzing with excitement, including the lucky daily winners of “THE” rugby jersey at Richmond Mall – congratulations to you all.

In Europe you can travel for a few hours and experience a completely different country, culture and cuisine. At Good & Tasty, you can try all the best flavours of Europe in one place, say its new owners.Karsden and Sylvia Rentsch have brought to Nelson their passion for food and experience working in a restaurant in Germany, hoping to inspire a love for the foods they are familiar with.Their menu includes specialties from many European countries, including Germany, Italy and Spain. As well as the menu options they have a lunch buf-fet which changes weekly and provides diners with a variety of authentic Euro-pean foods. Their in-store specialty is Flame Cake, an Alsatian dish that resembles a thin pizza, and is one of the most famous foods from the region. The couple are

especially excited about sharing this delicacy; “We had a look around all New Zealand and have seen there are no Flame Cakes. It’s not a pizza, it’s very different. I was doing this in Germany.”Good & Tasty celebrated their open-

ing early last month and are looking forward to letting Nelsonians experi-ence the delicious foods Europe has to offer, and share their passion with their diners. Come into Good & Tasty at 114 Bridge St to meet the friendly couple.

Nelson’s first natural burialThe first natural burial under the Nelson City Council’s re-vised policy has taken place. Joan Sutton was buried by her family in Marsden Valley Cem-etery on Tuesday, October 4.The change in policy to allow natural buri-als had been advocated by Joan and her husband, Peter, who, in August 2008, pe-titioned the Nelson City Council to create an area for natural burials in the city. The Suttons’, who had been campaigned on en-vironmental, peace and human rights issues for more than fifty years, argued that tradi-tional burials and cremation polluted the earth and the atmosphere with toxic chemi-cals and wished to avoid those impacts from their own deaths.Council eventually approved the dedication of a part of the Wakapuaka Cemetery for natural burials. However, when Joan died on September 30, the work of clearing and survey-ing the area had not been completed. It was clear that she

could not be buried there and seemed that she would have to be taken to Motueka Cemetery to receive the natural burial she had requested, says her widower, Peter.

“However, thanks to the efforts of Lindsay Barber and other officers of the council, an area of Marsden Valley Cemetery was set aside for natural burials so that Joan could be buried there in accordance with all the conditions she had requested. [We] were pleased with the new site and an emotional and fulfilling funeral was facilitated there by Lynda Hannah of Living Legacies in Mo-tueka.”Joan’s family and friends say they are de-lighted that one of her final acts of advocacy

resulted in the establishment, within the city that she loved, of a place for people to be buried in an environmentally safe and healthy way. They are also grateful to council for the prompt and considerate decision to open up the facility at Marsden Valley.

Local glass business expandsDon’t let the name fool you, Richmond Glass now has a shop in Nelson city. The locally-owned glass company has been operating in Richmond for the past 20 years and for most of that time has served its Nel-son customers from its Richmond base. But demand has now forced an expansion, with it opening a new store in Vanguard St, opposite Countdown.Richmond Glass still has its headquarters on Gladstone Rd in Richmond but its new Nelson branch is in the premises vacated by Smith & Smith Glass. It opened its doors to the new store last Monday. Manager Wayne Ballis says the move has filled a gap in the Nelson market and will allow its technicians

to access its Nelson customers more easily. “We are now the only glass business in Nel-son city that offers all glass options, the oth-ers focus just on auto. But we do auto, houses, ballestrades, anything glass, we do it.”Richmond Glass has built up a solid reputa-tion and is one of the only glass businesses advertising a 24/7 service. “We are happy to do 24/7 and we are fully moblie. We are also the only bigger glass company that is locally owned.”Wayne says people can also drop off their cars before work to get any glass work fixed and then walk to work in the CBD. “We’ve already found a heck of a lot of people take advantage of that,” he says.

Hyundai has been named the fastest growing automotive brand for the second year running, by global brand consultancy firm Interbrand. This year saw the company rise four places to number 61 in the top 100 annual ranking of the world’s 100 best global brands.Interbrand calculates rankings based on compa-ny balance sheets, marketing activities and each brand’s potential profit. The organisation said Hyundai “displayed the most memorable per-formance, continuing from the previous year, despite the growth slowdown of global brands”.Hyundai’s brand value increased from US$3.5 billion in 2005 to US$6 billion in 2011.“This award recognises the strong growth Hyundai continues to experience both at a lo-cal level in New Zealand and Internationally. It’s also an endorsement of Hyundai Motor Com-pany’s new brand strategy launched in January 2011, and the fact that the company’s continued commitment to building ‘modern premium’ ve-hicles, is gaining traction,” says the Chief Op-erating Officer of Hyundai New Zealand, Tom Ruddenklau. In New Zealand, sales of Hyundai vehicles are up 27 per cent compared to 2010, at a time when the overall New Zealand automotive industry grew by just 8.2 percent. In August, Hyundai New Zealand achieved the highest number of sales in its 29 year history, while internationally, Hyundai Motor Company was named the most improved car manufacturer of the last decade by UK based Auto Express.Tom Ruddenklau says, it has been a great year for Hyundai New Zealand, and the brand’s pop-ularity continues to go from strength to strength. “We are confident that momentum will contin-ue to grow as we gear up for the launch of the i40 Wagon and Veloster models later this year, adding to our range of well designed, economic, 5 star ANCAP safety rated vehicles.”Tom says the recently launched Elantra was named AutoPacific’s Ideal Compact Vehicle in September, while the i45 was named the 2011 International Car of the Year.

Mayor reflects on first year in officeThis week Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio celebrates a year in the city’s top job. It has

been a year dominated by talk of amal-gamation, Rugby World Cup, transport issues and whether or not Nelson needs a performing arts centre. He speaks with Nelson Weekly editor Andrew Board

about the year, the ups, the downs and how he rates his own performance.

Nelson Weekly: A year ago you won the support of Nelsonians on several key campaign promises; affordable council, economic development, putting Nelson

on the map, and educational training. Do you think you’ve kept those promises?

Aldo Miccio: Yes, we’ve tackled them all. Affordable council

was one of the big ones, and we achieved that with the lowest rate increase in years. It was a combination of taking some things

out of the plan, things that weren’t a priority for this council. There was also efficiency

gains in council itself and some cost cuttings.

Went from a plan of 12 per-cent [rate

increase], if you include the theatre, down to three percent, so it was a big drop. Eco-nomic development is one we are working on, we have set up the Economic Develop-ment Committee, to look at how economic development is spent. It gives it a real focus, before it was just a by-product of what council did.

NW: How would you rate your overall per-formance for your first year in the job?AM: Seven and a half. And this time next year I want to be nine and a half. There has been learning curves, when you’re in the hot seat there is a lot more to learn,I’ll always be learning but the bulk of that is done.

NW: What has been the biggest lesson you learnt from your first year?AM: You’re never going to please everyone. If I can reflect the view of 70 to 80 percent of Nelsonians I’ve just got to punch ahead, regardless of the noisy 20 percent.

NW: You pushed hard to bring the Rugby World Cup to Nelson. Why, and are you happy with how the city hosted it?AM: Rugby World Cup was about putting Nelson on the map and almost a catalyst in confidence; I think Nelson has lacked a bit of confidence in itself over the past 10 to 15 years. There is a lot of confidence and self-belief in the community now, because we were able to deliver on that international stage. We stepped up and did a great job of hosting such a big event and we are on the

map now, people are noticing us and that will all flow through post world cup. If we didn’t host matches we wouldn’t of had any-thing, we would have been like a Timaru or something, with no media exposure at all.

NW: The amalgamation debate is in full swing and in December we will find out if there will be a referendum on the issue. It was you that forced the Local Government Commission to look at amalgamation, how are you feeling about it now?AM: I’ve always believed it’s the right thing to do, for the betterment of the region and for future generations it will be better. Hav-ing this dividing line has been damaging over the past 20 years and the independent analysis has vindicated that view extremely strongly and that is positive.

NW: What are you goals for the next two years of your term as mayor?AM: Education is one we are working through now with NMIT and the colleges which is good. We are also working on our FIFA under 20 world cup bid, that has even more exposure than the Rugby World Cup. I’d like to see an events and marketing branch of council, working together with the community to market our facilities; a boardwalk along Rocks Rd is a must, I want to see an extension of free car parking to run all year on Tuesday’s and continue transparency. We are the only council in New Zealand that does our annual plan in public, no other does that.

Choose Richmond Glass to double glaze your ex-isting windowsRetro-fit double glazing lets you enjoy the warmth and comfort of your existing home by replacing your single glass with the latest ThermaTech double glazing.Richmond Glass has been car-rying out this straightforward process in many different kinds of homes, mainly around the Top of the South Island but also as far south as Arthurs Pass, for several years, giving homeowners warm results while also lowering their energy costs. Whether you have timber or aluminium framed win-dows, Richmond Glass has a dou-ble glazing solution to suit your needs. If you have aluminium-framed windows, a retro-fit could not be more simple. Richmond Glass re-places the existing exterior glaz-ing beads with the manufactur-er’s double glazing beads. Where that’s not possible, Richmond Glass uses its own multi-fit dou-ble glazing retaining beads, and where necessary, its new opening sashes. The new beads are pow-der coated or anodised to closely match the colour of your existing window frames. If you have timber-framed win-

dows, Richmond Glass uses the patented ‘Retro Fit NZ’ drainage adaptor energy saving system which allows all existing timber windows to be retained. With a retro-fit you have the best of both worlds; your home is vir-tually unchanged plus you gain all the benefits of double glazing. The work is quick and unobtru-sive. Richmond Glass experts will measure your windows, the new units will be made locally in Nel-son and a date set for your double glazing to be installed. Richmond Glass advises you every step of

the way. One of the company’s home improvement representa-tives will call on you and outline your options. A quotation is sup-plied without cost or obligation.Richmond Glass also checks that the task can be done within the building’s structure and that all technical specs and measure-ments are correct. Dealing with Richmond Glass you know that your home is entrusted to a lead-er in the glazing industry in New Zealand.Whatever the size or shape of your windows, Richmond Glass will handle it.

How does double glazing workRichmond Glass uses ThermaTech double glazing which consists of two or more panes of glass sepa-rated by an aluminium spacer, bonded together to form a com-pletely sealed unit called an Insu-lating Glass Unit or IGU.Heat and cold pass through single glass, whereas ThermaTech units trap a layer of air or Argon gas between two panes, creating a kind of blanket that protects the warmth of your interior. This re-duces heat transfer from inside to outside during winter and outside to inside in the summer months,

ensuring improved warmth and cooling in your home and also re-ducing energy costs by significant amounts.

Planitherm total low E glass for maximum effectPlanitherm Total Low E Glass is a high performance Low E coated glass, made of clear float glass on which a thin, transparent coat-ing has been deposited by mag-netron technology. This coating drastically reduces the heat trans-fer between inside and outside.Planitherm Total Low E Glass ther-mally performs approximately 10 percent better than standard hard

coat Low E glass commonly used in New Zealand. On top of this it does not suffer from the haze ef-fect of standard hard coat Low E. The finished product has a near crystal clear appearance that will not interfere with your views.

Stay warm without con-densationAs a building’s interior is warmed, there is an increased prospect of condensation, mould and mil-dew. Condensation forms when warm air containing moisture meets a cold window surface. If the conditions are right “dew point”

is reached and condensation forms. As the inner pane of Ther-maTech glazing remains substan-tially warmer than single glazing, condensation is dramatically re-duced.Nothing can completely elimi-nate condensation but ThermaT-ech double glazing comes close. In many cases moisture problems disappear forever, while in other situations just a small amount of condensation forms at the bot-tom of a window or frame. This is caused by factors such as ventila-tion rather than glazing. If you’re building new or have an existing home that needs warm-ing then call Richmond Glass.

The two sheets of glass are line bonded by computer control to pre-cise tolerances with a special dual seal around an aluminium spacer. Individual windows up to 3.15 by 2.4 metres can be produced.

When it comes to getting your car repaired, there are a few things you need to watch out for. A lot of people get caught out too easily – some-times because they are too trusting and some-times because they are unaware of what to look out for. Problems are avoidable simply by keep-ing your eyes and ears open from the start.

• Find a repair shopwho is a member of the Motor Trade Association (MTA). All MTA mem-bers offer a minimum three month/5,000km repairs warranty. If something goes wrong, you also have support at MTA to help solve any is-sues. • Ask around. Whenlooking for a reliable repair shop, ask friends and family who they recommend. Word of mouth is a powerful tool, so make the most of valuable opinions from those around you.• Whenyoutakeyourcar in,makesureyou explain what the problem is (what the symp-toms are). Try to avoid suggesting what is wrong, you’re not the mechanic so could be completely off track! It’s also a good idea to know a bit about

your car (oil and water levels), so you can check them before you take it in.• Get an estimate on howmuch the re-pair should cost, including both labour and parts costs. If it’s an expensive job, ask for a writ-ten quote. Sometimes the final cost can vary, but you shouldn’t expect to pay a lot more than originally quoted. Also ask them to notify you of

any changes to the agree-ment, particularly if extra work needs to be done which could increase the overall cost. • Beware of ‘must do’repairs that the mechanic suggests, nobody wants to pay for work that doesn’t need to be done. Don’t feel pressured for the work to be done im-mediately, tell your me-chanic you will get back to them, and in the mean-

time do some research, take your time and ask around. • Ifthejobisn’tcompletedtothestandardyou expected, or the problem you advised them about is still there, you must take the vehicle back to the repairer. • Makesureyougetyourvehicleservicedregularly. This will help reduce the chances of problems occurring.

A new kind of stereo...digital gateway technology.

More than just a green logo.

The new Rotel RCX 1500 is without doubt a stereo component built for the modern

world, a digital gateway and playback device in one. It combines a 2 x 100w efficient

and compact stereo tuner amplifier with all the quality music source interfaces that

matter most in today’s broadband connected age. You can stream music from your own

local network. Access internet radio to enjoy over 15,000 choices in musical content,

play CDs, or connect your iPod via the front USB input using the 24 bit/192kHz Wolfson

high fidelity DAC, listen to DAB+ digital radio and even enjoy old fashioned FM radio for

good measure. Your ethernet access can be wired or wireless, and supported codecs

include RealAudio®, WMA, MP3, AAC & AAC+ (non DRM), AU, WAV and AIFF. If this

component was three units instead of one, you could expect its value to be around

$5000. So at only $2499 it’s an outright steal.

Rotel has long been recognized by music and movie lovers for its high

performance amplifiers which deliver unrivalled sound quality and value

for money. Imagine that same high performance from amplifiers that use

less electricity per watt of output power, that produce less heat, that are

more compact and lighter weight, and have an overall smaller carbon

footprint. Wouldn’t you want to buy one?

Rotel’s range of innovative Class D amplifiers at last gives you the

opportunity to enjoy exceptional sound quality while minimizing the

impact on the environment. These amplifiers are not digital, but use

special circuitry and smart components to amplify your favourite sounds

in a more efficient way.

Not only are they more efficient in use, but energy is saved in their

manufacture and distribution. Without large power transformers, storage

capacitors and massive heatsinks, less natural resources are consumed,

and they require less packaging and less fuel to move.

No matter what your signal source or how many channels, you will always

need a good amplifier to drive your loudspeakers. For this reason, an

investment in Rotel delivers a pay-off now and for the future.

The number of burglaries and car thefts committed in Nelson last year has been slashed compared to 2009, helping police record an impressive 9.2 percent drop in overall crime. But local minister Nick Smith says more still needs to be done.

R e c o r d e d crime in Nel-son Bays for 2010 also showed that local police are performing well above the national average with crime down 5.6 percent nationally. There were 8764 crimes

reported in Nelson Bays for the 2010 year and 53.5 percent of those were re-solved. The national crime resolution rate was 47.5 percent.Nelson Bays Area Com-

mander Inspector Brian McGurk says the figures reflected the big drop in

burglaries, down 12.9 per-cent, and theft of and from vehicles, down 20.5 per-cent. The biggest increase in recorded offending was for sexual assault and re-lated offences, which went up by 127.3 percent from 55 to 120 offences. The resolution rate for this type of offending was also up, with 82.4 per-cent of crimes solved.

The rise is at-tributed to a greater num-ber of victims now report-ing, rather an increase in actual offences, which previously may have gone unreported, says Brian. Nelson MP Nick Smith

welcomed the news but says the city still needs to be made safer.“I congratulate them [po-

lice] for all their good work [but] I also have had concerns about the recent

Grandma, 98, renews drivers licence

READY FOR A RIDE: Jean Lukies, 98, has just renewed her drivers licence much to the delight of her proud family.

In the car ready for a ride are Nicole Lukies, Hayley Lukies, Toni Deas and Ella McGettigan. Photo: Andrew Board.

Great-grandmother Jean Lukies cel-ebrated her 98th birthday with family on Sunday, but she received her best present days earlier – her renewed drivers’ license. Her adoring family, whom she cooks

a three course meal for every Sunday, were thrilled with her achievement and labelled her an “inspiration” and “amazing”. Jean lives on the Port Hills

and maintains a large garden herself and is over-the-moon she is still able to drive, although she doesn’t go far these days.“It’s just the freedom of knowing I can

go wherever, I only go short distances now, just to town and back.”She says she wouldn’t like to lose her licence because while she reckons she can walk down the hill ok, getting

back up might be a bit tough.Jean, who was embarrassed by the attention when spoken to by Nelson Weekly, was given a one year exten-sion to her licence after she passed an eye exam and fitness test. She must do the same every year on her birthday and she says she has no plans to stop any time soon. “I would hate to see my car in the garage gathering dust.”

Nelson’s superyacht industry set to boomNelson is primed to be the latest must see destination for the rich and famous, creat-ing a new million dollar industry for the region.

Today, a multi-million dollar superyacht is set to sail into Nelson Haven, the fifth this summer and with each spending around $30,000 in the region, it is having positive spinoffs for the local economy and three local businessmen say that is just the start to a new luxury tourism market in the re-gion.John Baudier, Haden McCrorie and Dave Pinker started Yacht Services NZ last No-vember, which, among other things, spe-cialises in servicing superyachts. They say the number of extremely wealthy tour-ists coming to the region is set to explode and it could be worth millions to the local economy.

The trio have in fact been so success-ful in getting superyachts to Nelson that Port Nelson is considering a reshuffle of the marina to accommodate them all and Nelson Tasman Tourism is working with them to help bring more to the region.Haden, who grew up in Richmond, worked on a superyacht for eight years and his knowledge of what is needed by crew is such that he can tailor an entire visit for overseas guests. In the past few months he has worked with chefs to arrange gour-met food delivery, arranged hanger space for private jets at Nelson airport and even planned wine tours and accommodation for the guests. John admits they have been busier than they thought, thanks in part to a positive response they have received from agen-cies in Auckland who are now sending clients to Nelson and Marlborough. “This

year there are as many superyachts in New Zealand as there were during the Ameri-ca’s Cup in 2003, and next year we know there is going to be more.”John and Haden refused to say if anyone famous had visited Nelson this summer, as privacy is a cornerstone to their success, but John did manage to tease. “They may not be household names but if you read the Wall Street Journal you may have heard of some of them. Some guests we had looked after had their own Gulfstream G550 here in Nelson, go look up how much they are

worth and you will have some idea of the money they have.”A Gulfstream G550 jet airplane is worth around US$50million according to the manufactures website.Nelson’s key advantage is Haden, says John. “The superyacht industry is pretty small and often it’s the crew that make decisions about where they are going and they talk with each other. They know Haden, or know of him, and when he says ‘why don’t you come down here’ they trust him. And they haven’t been let down, every single

super yacht we’ve had here loved it.”The majority of the superyachts are owned by wealthy Americans, Europeans and Australians.Harbour master Dave Duncan says the arrival of multiple superyachts to Nelson is exciting for the region. “This is some-thing new and something that will be of massive benefit to Nelson financially so we are working hard to make that easier for them.”

Battle of the boozeOne dead, one seriously injured as

alcohol fuels carnage in Nelson

Police have been left shaking

their heads after a man was

killed, another seriously hos-

pitalized and several more ar-

rested after another boozy Sat-

urday night in Nelson. And Nelson Weekly can reveal

Nelson’s leaders have moved

to ensure more personnel will

be deployed on Nelson streets

during the Rugby World Cup

to make sure thousands of visi-

tors to the city are not exposed

to any bad drunken behavior.

The man killed was 21 year old

Travis Cole Russ. He was the

passenger of a car driven by

a disqualified driver who had

been drinking and was speed-

ing when he crashed on Main

Rd Stoke, around 10pm on Sat-

urday night. Tasman Road Policing Man-

ager Inspector Jenni Richard-

son says the driver had been

charged with manslaughter,

dangerous driving causing

injury and driving while dis-

qualified. Police are awaiting

the results of a blood test to

confirm his blood alcohol limit

was over the legal amount.

The carnage continued late

into the night; at around 3am

on Sunday morning a mass

brawl erupted near McDonalds

with one man knocked out and

taken to hospital by ambulance

with several other men arrest-

ed by police for the incident.

All this after police admitted

they were “disappointed” that

Nelson bar owners had turned

down a trial period for a one-

way door policy. Bar owners

say they are doing as much as

they can to make Bridge St a

safe place to be.Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio

says the incidents, all involv-

ing alcohol, showed the coun-

try needs a culture change to

drinking, but it was not just

Nelson that faced that chal-

lenge. He also confirmed that

extra police and street am-

bassadors would be deployed

to provide a bigger presence

Twenty seven yachts lined up last Wednesday night, racing in a gusty easterly breeze for race two of the Vining Ship Brokers Spring Series. The 15 division one boats started five minutes ahead of the 12 division two boatsBlackout (Noel Eichbaum) lead the div one fleet out the entrance but was soon overtaken by the Catamaran G Force (Grant Hilton) en-joying the strong gusts and flat water.G Force was first back into the harbour finish-ing 17 minutes ahead of Blackout in second with Wild Oats (Robert Greenwood) only 36 seconds behind Blackout in third.First on handicap was G Force.

Division two once again saw the five bigger boats of Kakariki (Chris Nieman), South Seas Clipper (John Cotton), Wind Dancer (Lindsey Duff) and Dardanelle (Mike Cotton) fighting it out up front. But the fickle wind and outgoing tide in the harbour entrance slowed their progress, letting sixth and seventh placed boats Svaap (Geoff Combes) and one of the smallest boats in the fleet, Otnip (Mark Bishop) sneak up close to No 1 beacon, with Otnip taking the gun at the finish line at Nelson Yacht Club.First on handicap was Otnip. - By Kevin Skelton.

The ever-green Mark Douglas returned where he left off last season and currently sits 77 not out heading in to this week’s final day. His total comprised of 11 fours. Ben Alder was out on 14 runs while captain Ryan Edwards man-

aged just five runs before rain halted play with Stoke-Nayland sitting at 97/1.One session was lost due to inclement weather.Ryan says it was a great way to start the season and was particularly happy with how the two new arrivals had eased into the squad, after Waimea College folded as a senior team. “We were pretty impressed with how the boys bowled, especially the two news boys, Connor and Marty,” he says. “They were outstanding. Connor is a pretty good signings for us. He seems to get on pretty well with the boys too, which is good.”

Greg Smith is stalked by Murray Cameron as they head towards the finish line. Murray got up to pip Greg at the line in the C grade of the Nelson City Council Cathedral Criterium. The race was part of the Konica Minolta Cycle Festival which has been wheeling its way around the region over the past nine days. Photo: Andrew Board.

If you’re looking for a new way to experience classic tastes, make your way to Good & Tasty, at 114 Bridge St. Karsden and Syl-via Rentsch have come to Nelson from Germany, bringing with them delicious European fla-vours.A Lunch Buffet is available every day for $10, with the buffet options changing weekly and reflecting a type of European cuisine. Their menu also boasts ‘tarte flambée’, an Alsatian dish also known as Flame Cake, composed of rectangular bread dough cov-ered with thinly sliced onions and lardons, and cooked in a stone-bake oven. All their food is prepared fresh

in store. While in Germany the cou-ple ran a small restaurant and bot-tle shop in Germany, so they’re well versed in customer service and hos-

pitality. They had sold New Zea-land wines, and after holidaying here two years ago, decided to move over and open a business. The couple pro-vide a personal and welcom-ing service; as the only two who work in the kitchens you know that the food will be pre-pared expertly and authenti-cally. They have been open since mid-September. Come in to meet the friendly cou-ple and enjoy the

exciting European tastes served by Good & Tasty.

Softball is in full swing now and despite wet and chilly conditions on Saturday, the Premier A Women were heating up the competition with a round of double headers.Royals xtRreme were the pick of the bunch at the Saxton Diamond, collect-ing two very important victories, the first coming against a well-skilled Stoke Eagles side 14-13. Stoke had previously lead with 11 runs in just the first two innings, in-cluding a home run to Rachel Knowles. But with the game looked to be sewn up, Royals brought their A-Game in the fourth innings and capitalized on fielding errors, bringing in several runs to tie the score. Natasha Dunn then hit the win-nings runs for extreme, to take the Nar-elle Te Purei Memorial Trophy.Royals picked up the second win of the day with a 13-0 thrashing over United R&B’s.Royals coach Rab Jamieson was pleased with the performances. “We had timely contributions from some of our batters. Janine Bang was hitting well and Monica McBride had a reasonable part in devel-oping things – she had a few hits to the outfield and put down good bunts,” he says.Stoke Eagles defeated United R&B in the league’s other match, 16-0.

Plenty of runs for softballers

Olympians Corney Swanepoel and William Benson dived in to the ASB Aquatic Centre on the weekend, part of the Olympian Stroke and Skill Clinic. Boys and girls of all ages were given lessons on starts, turns, technique, and nutrition and they even got a chance to race with and against their heroes. Former swimming champion Paul Kent, who is now the director of the Magic New Zealand Swimming Academy, was also in attendance. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Masters in townHalf of the athletes registered for the South Island Masters Games next weekend are from the Nelson region, which is well above expectations, says games director Chris Thomas. The South Island Masters Games 2011 is be-ing held in Nelson for the first time, from 15 – 23 October. This year, 3,000 athletes aged over 30 years-old will compete across 50 sports in-front of more than 1,500 specta-tors, making it one of the largest participa-tion events in the South Island. Chris says he is thrilled at how Nelson has got behind the games.“We had an expectation of around 1000 competitors to come from the Nelson re-

gion, so we are really impressed that Nelson registrations have exceeded 1500,” Thomas says. “The vast majority are from central Nelson suburbs, but we also have more than 300 from the wider Tasman region, includ-ing a group coming over from Golden Bay. “Nelson is really taking ownership of the games, which is very important for the suc-cess of an event like this,” he says. “Building on Nelson’s brilliant performance as a Rugby World Cup host city, the Nelson region will have a chance to shine again na-tionally and internationally, to hopefully cement itself as one of the main places for masters athletes from around the world to come to.”

Mille Knight, of Nelson White girls 11th grade, beats her marker with a nice touch at the Jack McKnight Football Tournament. The tournament is held every year at Saxton Field and welcomes teams from all over the South Island. The tournament finishes this afternoon. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
