We trust that their time with us is richly rewarding and everything that they hope for. This is National Child Protection Week and in recognition of this critical national focus, representatives from Bravehearts addressed students in Prep to Year 3 today. My thanks to Miss Mitchell for her organisation of this special event. Relevant parents are asked to prompt discussion at home about children’s learnings from the Bravehearts presentation and the follow-up discussions with teachers in classrooms. Wakakirri participants did our school community proud last Tuesday night with yet another high quality public performance at the Logan Entertainment Centre, this time on Awards Night. It was a pleasure to be in the audience on such an entertaining night with so much talent on show. Again, our school was awarded on the night, this time for public speaking and for our crystal clear health message. Further congratulations to all involved and special thanks to Ms Haley and Mrs Dair for their leadership and tireless efforts. As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, school camps provide an excellent opportunity for self-discovery for involved students and this was certainly the case for our Year 5 students at Edmund Park last week. As I write, my involvement in the Year 6 and 7 camps beckons, and I look forward to soon arriving at Emu Gully to share some of the experiences with students and staff. A working party of staff are currently building the school’s new Positive Behaviour for Learning Plan that will formally address instances of student disengagement with school expectations. This plan, for the promotion of positive student behaviour for learning, across the school, will deliver processes and practices that will further enhance our already productive educational environment at St Joseph’s. Staff will continue their pursuit of individual professional improvement through attendance at an Information Technology Breakfast next Tuesday morning at 7.30am. My thanks to Mrs Hall for her organisation of this important gathering. This month’s P&F Meeting occurs next Tuesday from 6.30pm in the staffroom. Following our special August P&F Meeting with guest speaker, Carmel Nash, I look forward to the September meeting’s focus on initial plans for a P&F restructure in 2015. Pleasingly, vision screening occurs for 35 students next Wednesday. My thanks to Mrs Hall and Mrs Carroll for organising this potentially life changing, no cost provision for relevant families. All are welcome to next Wednesday’s Instrumental Concert from 2.15pm in the school hall. My thanks to Mrs Haran for her organisation of this event. Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) continues to be of the highest priority at St Joseph’s, and to meet Brisbane Catholic Education WHS requirements, our 2014 WHS components will be audited next Thursday. My thanks to Mrs Logan and Mrs Hanrahan for their ongoing WHS work and audit preparations. A reminder that, as per this year’s 18th March newsletter, the school’s swimming program will move to Term 4, with lessons changing to a single day per week (as opposed to the previous 2 week block). Hence, swimming lessons commence for students in Years 1 to 7 in Term 4, on the Thursday of Week 1 (9 October). My thanks to Mr O’Keeffe for his organisational work and for preparing related correspondence that will soon be sent home. Please claim the morning of Saturday 11 October for our Term 4 Working Bee (8.00am – 11.00am). Please continue to pray for Sister Jenny as she recovers at home from her recent successful surgery, and please also pray for Mrs Moorton who is scheduled to undergo surgery next Thursday. Next Wednesday, staff and students will warmly welcome a visit to the school by Mrs Pangbourne, who continues her steady recovery from the serious injury that she sustained in June. Heavenly Father, giver of life and health, comfort your unwell servants who are known to our school community, and give your power of healing to those who minister to their needs. Last week we welcomed Ashleigh McNamara (Year 6) and her family to the St Joseph’s Tobruk Memorial

School community. We trust that their time with us is richly rewarding and everything that they hope for.

This is National Child Protection Week and in recognition of this critical national focus, representatives from

Bravehearts addressed students in Prep to Year 3 today. My thanks to Miss Mitchell for her organisation of

this special event. Relevant parents are asked to prompt discussion at home about children’s learnings from

the Bravehearts presentation and the follow-up discussions with teachers in classrooms.

Wakakirri participants did our school community proud last Tuesday night with yet another high quality

public performance at the Logan Entertainment Centre, this time on Awards Night. It was a pleasure to be

in the audience on such an entertaining night with so much talent on show. Again, our school was awarded

on the night, this time for public speaking and for our crystal clear health message. Further congratulations

to all involved and special thanks to Ms Haley and Mrs Dair for their leadership and tireless efforts.

As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, school camps provide an excellent opportunity for self-discovery for

involved students and this was certainly the case for our Year 5 students at Edmund Park last week. As I

students who learn instruments at the school. We look forward to seeing you.

Last Friday the Year Two students went on an excursion to the Science Centre and Museum in Brisbane. They had lots of hands-on fun at the Science Centre learning about how our bodies work, outer space and pretending to be spies. At the Museum they engaged with exhibits about indigenous people, the ocean and fossils. Some very lucky students even got to touch some stick insects in the Discovery Zone. Museum and Science Centre staff commented on how the Year 2 students were well behaved and respectful. It was a great day out for the teachers and students.

Next term students from Years 1-7 will participate in a school swimming program at the Aqua Logan Pool, Beenleigh. As mentioned at the beginning of the year, St Joseph’s is moving towards an end of year swimming program and to secure this spot it is necessary to complete Term 4 swimming lessons this year. All students from Years 1-7 are expected to participate. Years 1-3 will be completing a swim safety program and the Year 4-7 students will be completing a stroke correction program. Lessons will take place every Thursday in Term 4 – Week 1 to Week 7.

Lesson Dates: 09/10, 16/10, 23/10, 30/10, 06/11, 13/11, 20/11 Carnival Date: 21/11 Friday Week 7

Please keep an eye out for more information in next week’s newsletter and also for

a permission form that will be coming home with your child next week.

It was a big Koala Joey’s day last week.

a story in the library with our

Librarian, Mrs Giebels,

borrowing a book from the

school library, visiting Mr Johnson’s office and seeing

quite a few of his treasures.

There is no Koala Joey’s session in the last week of term or the first week back. We look forward to seeing our Koala Joey’s at our next session 14 October.

Thanks to everyone who supported our celebration of Book Week. It was really wonderful to see the effort the children put into their displays for the library and the wonderful costumes created by families for our book parade. Our winners were selected on their creativity and the connection to books (even if there is a movie made from the title). We made over a thousand dollars profit from our book fair that we shall use towards getting some more display boards in the library.

Many thanks to our band of helpers, particularly Irene Witham, Susan McGovern, Raelene

Marston, Tracey Drescher and the many others who popped in and out to help with the sale

and setup of our fair. Without their help and the support of our families, Book Week would

not happen!

Dental vans will no longer be visiting schools. Parents must now arrange children’s appointments. The clinic will soon be sending flyers home to Years 6 & 7 in an effort to have these students’ dental hygiene up to date before moving to high school. The closest clinic to St Joseph’s is in the Beenleigh State School grounds beside the Beenleigh Library. To make an appointment with Metro South Health School Dental Service phone 1300 300 850 (Monday to Friday – 7:30 to 4:00). Have your Medicare Card and Health Care Card (if you have one) with you when you call. For further information, please visit www.health.qld.gov.au/metrosouth/oralhealth/

Congratulations to the St Joseph’s MI Smarts League team who were lucky enough to play at half time of the Titans v Bulldogs game last Sunday. It was a wonderful experience for the boys and girls in the team to not only play at Cbus Stadium but to also “high five” the Titans players as they ran onto the field for the second half. I can’t be 100% certain, but I think it was this support that spurred the Titans to a great comeback win. I would like to thank all the students involved, their parents for getting everyone to the venue and especially NRL Development Officer, Matt Palin, and all NRL Development staff, who gave us the opportunity to be involved. We will have a team photo in an upcoming newsletter.
