TRANSCRIPT
From the School Leadership TeamThis week, Year 11 students started their two weeks of learning in places and spaces beyond the school; at camps and/or Work Experience. The camps are quite diverse, and involvement is based on the quality of the written submission requesting a particular camp.
• Scuba Diving – Moreton Island
• Sea Kayaking – Moreton Bay
• White Water Canoeing – Nymboida River NSW
• Bushwalking – Mount Barney
• Horse Riding – Sunshine Coast
• Canoe Touring – Upper Noosa River
• Mountain Biking – Noosa Regional Trails
In conjunction with camp, the Year 11s do Work Experience at a variety of workplaces. Some of these organisations include:
• Better Life Psychology• Jacob’s Well Environmental Education Centre• BVN Architecture• Green Apple Wellness Centre• Royal Brisbane Women’s Hospital• Gallipoli Barracks• Mitchelton Special School• Network Ten• QPAC• Department of Infrastructure, Local Government & Planning• Bureau of Meteorology
Both programs are valuable in building young people’s capacity, and in the case of Work Experience, providing students with an environment that is hopefully unfamiliar and challenging. The camps also develop capacity in a different way. Students become more certain of their ability to handle the unknown or they develop a skill-set dependent on which camp.
It’s been a very busy term for parents as well with the last of the Information Nights completed and Subject Selection all but completed.
The Year 12s are about to sit for their Mini-Block exams and are looking forward to their Senior Formal next Friday. Very exciting and we wish them all a fabulous night.
We will close with an interesting opportunity for a current Year 10 student to study in the USA for a year. It’s a great way to develop capacity in another country.
For those interested, details are provided through the link http://www.assist-inc.org/prospective-candidates/application-instruc-tions/australia It is a highly sought after scholarship, so please see one of us if you are interested.

Tuckshop NewsRosemary Smith, one of our lovely Tuckshop Co-Convenors, has announced that she will be retiring from Tuckshop at the end of 2015. We will be very sorry to see Rosemary go, as both she and Julie Garvey have done a wonderful job running the Tuckshop together for many years.
Katrina Coomber recently stepped in at short notice to assist in a temporary capacity as Tuckshop Co-Convenor for six hours per week. Katrina is at the Tuckshop on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 7.30am - 10.30am, so please say hello if you see her there.
Hillbrook Anglican School P&F Tuckshop Co-Convenor PositionHillbrook Anglican School P&F wishes to employ a casual Tuckshop Co-Convenor on a job-share basis for approximately 21.5 hours per week. The Co-Convenor has joint responsibility for all aspects of Tuckshop management, including meeting relevant food safety, and Workplace Health and Safety regulations. The successful applicant will hold a current Blue Card and QAST Food Safety Supervisor’s certificate.

Hillbrook Under the Stars - 24 October 2015The Hillbrook P&F and Parents.Connect would like to invite you to Hillbrook’s premiere social event of the year, ‘Hillbrook
Under The Stars’ on Saturday 24 October 2015. This is the chance for our adult community to enjoy a relaxing social evening with a lovely meal and great live music. This year we have the fantastic new forecourt area allowing us to host a much bigger event. We have two caterers with two delicious menus for you to choose. We are also really excited that this year our live music will be provided by past Hillbrook students. Relax and socialise during the meal and have your dancing shoes on for later in the evening!
Here is how it works: Gather a group of 8-10 adults; from your class, year level or a group of friends from school. We are happy to seat you if you do not have a preferred table. This year past parents are also invited. Try to nominate a table leader as this makes it easy to get information out to your group easily. Give your table a name but try to add something if you are using a Year level and colour as we often have a number of tables from one class (e.g. 8 Red Jellybeans, 8 Red Frogs).
Parent liaisons will be sending information to classes and it is hoped that they can facilitate getting table groups together. Alternatively, feel free to make up your own table groups. HUTS is a great chance to catch up with people you know and to make new friends. It is a celebration of our school community and spirit.
The cost of the evening is $35 per person, BYO drinks and each table is asked to provide two desserts to share with everyone. All profits from the evening will be going to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. In order to streamline the booking and ticketing process, this year we are using trybooking.com.
The invitation to HUTS is at the end of this newsletter or on the Hillbrook website. It includes a link to trybooking.com to book and purchase your tickets. This also includes menu choices, table names and other information we need for your booking. Tickets on sale from 28/8/15. RSVP 10/10/15. For further information: [email protected]
Lines From the LibraryBooks & ReadingPremier’s Reading Challenge: The Premier’s Reading Challenge is an annual state-wide initiative for state and non-state schools and home-educated students up to Year 9, and children attending an approved kindergarten program or long day care centre. The Premier’s Reading Challenge is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2015. The challenge is not a competition but aims to improve literacy and encourage children to engage in reading for pleasure and learning.
To participate in this voluntary challenge, students simply read materials of their own choice and record the titles. Student selected from a range of fiction and non-fiction books suited to their ability and appropriate reading lists were available if guidance was required.
Hillbrook junior school students were all offered the opportunity to add their school-based reading to a record sheet for submission to PRC. All students who completed 15 books will receive a certificate from the Premier in November. Reading for PRC officially began on 19 May and ran through until 28 August. We are now submitting the records on behalf of our readers.
Eligible so far for a certificate from the Premier are: Otis Mayocchi – 7 Blue; Bianca Harris – 7 Blue; Marcus Van Rausch – 7 Green; Holly Badcock – 8 Red; Alexandra Willmott – 8 Green; Isabella Gordon – 8 White; Rainer Englund-Strachan – 8 White
The remaining entries for the Year 7 Read-A-Round Tim Winton’s Blueback have been ‘judged’ and the winners of iTunes vouchers are: Abbey Hughes - 7 Blue; Kayla Schultz - 7 Green; Ryan Matus - 7 Red; Alex Yann - 7 White
Research & AssignmentsBiomes: Year 8 Global Studies’ students are researching the different biomes around the earth and the way that people have survived in and exploited these environments. They are also investigating the current environmental threats these unique places face.
World War II: Year 10 Global students have begun working on their chosen topic for an individual hypothesis about the Second World War. Their efforts are focussed on the three theatres of that war; Europe, the Pacific and the Australian military involvement and the home front too.
Both groups of students are working in the library with their teachers and library staff. We are encouraging the use of books, (print and digital) and also our vast array of online resources and databases. Do ask your child about the excellent range of resources accessible via the Library homepage Online @ Hillbrook.
News & Special EventsBrisbane Writers Festival: Last Friday we accompanied 20 Year 7, 8 and 9 students to the BWF to see presentations by lauded US writers Holly Black and Cassandra Clare and Australian authors Jane Caro, David Burton, John Marsden and Elizabeth Farrelly. This is always a great day out and it proved no exception this time too. Some student comments included:
“A fun and informative day”
“Inspiring with the writers’ sharing tips”
“Some great ideas on how to use language curatively and finding your own voice”
“Meeting the authors was great – all genuine and lovely people’’
“John Marsden talked about developing your own unique writing
style”
“I learnt that more reading = better writing!”
“It was a great experience and I definitely want to go again next year’
“A great learning experience and a lot of fun too”
Author Claire Zorn visit next term: On Tuesday 20 October we have Victorian award-winning writer Claire Zorn joining us to speak with Year 8 students. Claire has just won the Children’s Book Council of the Year Older Reader award for her first novel, ‘The Protected’. Our Year 8s will be reading Claire’s second book, ‘The Sky So Heavy’, for their set English novel next term. This is a dystopian story and can be best described as the ‘Tomorrow
When the War Began’ for the nuclear generation. Claire will be discussing the structure of the book and sharing her special insights as the author. This will be a very enriching experience for all our Year 8 readers and writers alike.

Learn How to Present With Confidence, Energy & EngagementDo you experience fear, nerves, blushing and anxiety when you present in front of the class? The reality is that making presentations will be a constant in your life - school assessment, university assignments, employment interviews and workplace presentations. However, presenting with confidence, energy and engagement can be learned, practised and perfected easily.
Come along to the four, one-hour workshops and invest the time practising how to deliver great presentations. Bring along your fear, nerves and anxiety and learn how to present with confidence, energy and engagement. Everyone attending will have an opportunity for self-reflection and receive constructive feedback from everyone.
Each week, you will get the opportunity to practise within a small group and then during the final week deliver a short, prepared
presentation in front of everyone (subject to the class size). You will also need to regularly practise at home what you learn if you really want to improve. Without dedicated practice, nothing will ever change. Come along and see how easy it is to ‘work’ an audience. I promise you, it will be fun.
The presenter is Stephen Hartley, a highly qualified, retired corporate professional (and Hillbrook parent) who stuttered until he was 25 and went on to deliver over 3500 training, facilitation, webinars and conference workshops throughout Australia and SE Asia. He now volunteers much of his time and expertise in helping others improve and work towards their goals.
Please email [email protected] if you have any questions or concerns you would like to raise.
Workshops will be Tuesday afternoons 3.30 - 4.30pm starting from 13 October. There is no cost. Register your name by seeing Ms Schuler or emailing her at [email protected]
