In this session Judith Thomas and Danai Gagne will "leave the comfort of their cities to wander in the wilderness of their intuitions" by teaching in an evocative, "risky", explorative mode which is at the core of Orff Schulwerk. With Judith, participants will be invited to create a group spoken/sung/moved/played piece "from scratch" to be performed as a "one‐time" original. Through inventive and open questioning, Judith (and later Danai) will demonstrate ways of evoking from students in ways which allows them to synthesize and use their music skills. In the second half of the session, Danai will depart from a masterwork piece of art toward developing a movement piece, also demonstrating how to create with a group when the teacher is in " facilitator mode."

Mission Vista High School Steel Drum Ensembles

2:30 PM 3:00 PM The Steel Drum program at Mission Vista High School in Oceanside, CA, provides beginning through exemplary ensemble experiences and is taught through the Orff process. The ensembles play for school, city, and county events, including local universities and live TV morning shows in San Diego. These energetic students work collaboratively, arrange their music, and create unique performances, and live their motto: "We ARE the music!"

Anne Fennell is a music educator and Orff Schulwerk Specialist, teaching music composition and steel pan ensembles in her 29th year of education. Her presentations for AOSA, school districts, state and national music conferences focus on Orff‐Schulwerk, assessment, music composition, and integrated arts. She is a published author with The Grammy Foundation, Little Einstein's, and Pearson Education.

Zhijuan ‐ Silverware Dance of the Ethnic Miao in China R
