Guatemala Mission ReportLarry & Sarah Plyler - Operation GO Strategists- Guatemala

It is always a joy to watch God at work as we pray for more workers in His harvest.

It was a blessing once again to work with Taylor Road Baptist Church from Montgomery, AL. Team leader this year was Dean Finch and joining him were Ron Beckham and his wife Jenimae, Katie Bowden, Toney Hood, Mark Chandler, Russell Dean, and Conrad Missildine. Also helping the Plylers were Operation GO national team members Manolo Morales, Gustavo Garcia, Andrea Moraga, and Jesus Perez.

The team worked in El Peru, a village near Retahluleu. They worshipped with the mother church, Primera Iglesia Bautista in Mazatenango on Sunday evening. Bro. Russell Dean shared the message and testimonies and song were also shared. On Monday morning they prayer walked in El Peru and then divided into groups to go door to door to share the gospel.

The mission church, Sendero de la Vida, in El Peru was built in the '90's but closed its doors several years ago because there was no pastor and very few people. The mother church, Primera Iglesia Bautista, Mazatenango, took it under its wings and asked for Operation GO to come in and help. Several teams have worked in the area and the mother church has been sending two lay leaders to lead the Bible studies weekly.

On Monday as we gathered with several of the mother church members and their Pastor Oscar Corleto, a man who was from El Peru also joined us. He had his Bible in hand and a notebook to take down addresses. As Pastor Oscar talked to him, he found out that Hermano Alex had recently returned from the States where he had lived for 15 years. With a huge grin on his face Pastor Oscar told Larry, "Alex has been living in Little Rock, Arkansas, and attending Primera Iglesia Bautista in North Little Rock, Arkansas, and has been taking Baptist Seminary classes!" Alex told the group, "I felt like God wanted me back in Guatemala to share Christ with my people!" We were so excited---another great answer to prayer!

We are praying that Alex may be the Pastor that has been needed in "the Lord's harvest" in El Peru. He worked hard with us each day taking notes at each house and promising to go back and visit again. Two hundred and twelve heard the gospel and twenty !ve prayed a decision for Christ. Nineteen want Bible studies and ninety three books of John were given out.

On Wednesday afternoon we invited everyone to a worship service in the mission church in El Peru. Seventy eight people attended and Bro. Ron Beckham shared the message. Testimonies and song were also shared. It was a joy to see the doors of the church open and the church full of people there to worship "the Lord of the harvest!"

Matthew 9:37-38nkjvThen He said to His disciples, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. 38 Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.”

Recently, a blog post really struck a chord with me. It’s from Paul Baloche’s website www.leadworship.com. Here is an excerpt:

Beware of the Stage

Within our American Idol/Rock Star culture, often the goal is all about having–and keeping–the spotlight. As Christians, we belong to a least-is-the-greatest kingdom that pronounces the exact opposite, and yet worship leaders must regularly wrestle with the dynamics of being onstage in front of crowds.

Even the typical “worship service” setup (platform, microphones, spotlights, etc.), for example, forces its leaders to walk dangerously close to those “rock star” elements while making sure the attention stays solely on God. There are many things that we can do to help us from being infected by our performance culture and as always we !nd timeless wisdom in the ancient text of scripture.

There is a Priestly model described in 1 Chronicles as “ministry to the Lord”. The Levites didn’t “lead people” in worship but instead were charged with the task of singing praise to God both day and night, in the temple. They sang to the Invisible God – an audience of One. How often do we minister to God in private? Ideally, worship leading is publicly modeling what we have been doing privately. A healthy habit is to “practice” worship throughout the week by creating some alone time with God and by singing songs and prayers to Him.

I’m convicted that in worship services we can confuse “ministry to the Lord” with “ministry to ourselves”. We all like to sing songs we know and remind us of our salvation experience, a spiritual breakthrough, or when we received comfort from the Lord. However, it’s always good to be reminded to Whom we are o!ering the songs to. Our response to these songs is a by-product of the worship experience itself and God drawing us close to Himas we lift Him up.

My hope is that our corporate worship as the family of faith at Taylor Road Baptist Church is just “public modeling” of the private worship we engage in when no one is watching.

Every day should be Thanksgiving for Christians!

Recently, I listened to my son share about the leper colonies he worked in while on a mission trip to India last month. He left India with a burden for their lives, both physically and spiritually. As he shared his experiences, I began thinking of about the lepers in the Bible. Thank you, God, for saving me from something worse than leprosy – SIN! May I never be like the nine lepers who did not return to thank Christ for the wonderful miracle He worked in their lives (Luke 17:11-19). Instead, may we cultivate an attitude of thankfulness (I Thessalonians 5:8). We can thank God because of Who He is (Psalm 196:1), for His promises in Scripture, for the blessings He bestows on us (Ephesians 1:3), and even for the trials that help re!ne our faith (James 1:2-4).

I challenge each of you to make a simple turkey during Thanksgiving. Each day, add feathers of faith. Daily, write something you are thankful for on a feather and add it to the turkey. Fill your turkeys with feathers of faith!

First of all, we extend our deepest appreciation to you for your help in making this year’s Taylor Road Treats the Town a success. Of course, we are writing this on faith that you will have made this year awesome, but if we’ve learned one thing about Taylor Road in our years here--it is that you always come through. So, thank you once again for being so faithful to reaching out in our community.

Okay, I have a confession--I’ve already started listening to Christmas music. I know that for some of you, October is just way too early to crank the Bing Crosby Christmas Album but I just can’t help it. Something about the !rst little chill in the air makes me pull up the Christmas playlist. All that to say, we love this time of year. We love the constant reminders of God’s faithfulness and Christ’s sacri!ce.

It is a wonderful time of year to share with others, and we encourage you to get the whole family involved in service this year. In this Archways, you will !nd a “Giving Guide.” Take a moment to sit down with the whole family to !gure out one or more of the opportunities in which to get involved. Talk about the ministry, pray together for it, and then work together as a family to pack a shoebox, get gifts for Angel Tree, serve Thanksgiving dinner at Cleveland Court, deliver gifts for Every Stitch a Prayer, or visit with families at the Annual Montgomery Baptist Association Toy Sale. Pick one or all and make it a family tradition.

Upcoming Children’s Events:

November 9 - Operation Christmas Child Store in AWANA- Children will pack shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. November 16- AWANA Crazy Hat Night - Wear the craziest hat you can concoct and get a special treat. We will have a special lesson on the armor of God.

THANKSGIVING& CHRISTMAS GIVING GUIDE

Why A Guide?

The vision behind creating this guide was to help make you aware of the opportunities that are available for you to give at this special time of year.

By putting all the Holiday ministries together in one guide, it is our hope that you will be able to more e!ectively choose how to share God’s love during this Holiday season.

“Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.”

Hebrews 13:16 esv

Angel Tree is a ministry that reaches out to the children of inmates and their families with the love of Christ. This unique program gives Taylor Road an opportunity to share our Savior’s love by helping to meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the families of prisoners.

Angel Tree works by connecting parents in prison with their children through the delivery of Christmas gifts. Every Christmas, thousands of churches like Taylor Road help brighten the lives of countless children by purchasing, wrapping and delivering gifts on behalf of their incarcerated parent—not only delivering a message of love from parent to child, but also the true meaning of Christmas—the good news of Jesus Christ.

Names for children will be placed on a Christmas Tree in the grand foyer Sunday, November 20. Go by the tree and pick an angel. On the card you will !nd their name, age and gift ideas.

Once you have selected your gifts, bring them back to the church by Sunday, December 11. We will distribute them on Saturday, December 17 at 10:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Suite.

Every Stitch A PrayerEvery Stitch A Prayer, a sewing ministry that meets every Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. on the second "oor of Building B is collecting candy, pre-packaged cookies and crackers for gift bags. These gift bags will be delivered at Christmas time, to di#erent assisted living facilities in the Montgomery area. If you have any items to donate, please place them in the Every Stitch A Prayer boxes located around the buildings.

They are also in need of fabric and thread, espeically in Christmas patterns to making stockings and bags for Hands of Christ Ministry Center and Community of Hope.

Contact the church o$ce for more information.

Toy Sale! The 3rd Annual Montgomery Baptist Association Toy Sale will be held again this December. The event o#ers new toys for parents and grandparents in the city who are unable to purchase Christmas gifts for their children otherwise. A cafe will be open for the parents and grandparents as they wait to have their gifts wrapped. There are volunteers in the cafe waiting to pray and share God's plan of salvation with each parent as they come through. We need the church membership to consider helping provide the following:

* Cookies (any kind) especially Christmas decorated cookies* Sugar free cookies* Packets of regular and sugar free hot chocolate

If you are able to help, please bring cookies and hot chocolate packets to the church on Sunday, December 4. There will be labeled boxes provided.

Operation Christmas ChildOperation Christmas Child brings needed supplies and salvation to children all over the world. Here’s the story of the impact on Filipinos.

They collect bottles and other pieces of trash to sell. Their houses sit right on the edge of the dump site and are made of trash. While most people crinkle their noses and want to leave, the dump people smile and laugh.

The children in this area are quiet, but happy. Boys run shirtless through small patches of grass with a soccer ball. Girls watch and giggle in their crisp, white school blouses and plaid skirts. They’ve just !nished a day of school and walked home under the hot and sticky June sun.

Today, the smiles are a little wider. On the walk home, the children cradle Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes underneath their elbows.

Although the teachers tried to keep it a secret, the children found out that they would receive gifts, and were excited. Before she received her shoe box, 8-year-old Joy listed the things she wanted. “School supplies, slippers, a pencil case, a pencil...anything that could be used for writing...and shoes.”

All of these are simple things that most American children take for granted. But in impoverished areas like this one, school supplies and basic clothing make a huge di"erence.

With new school supplies, the children will have more opportunities in class. But the shoe boxes don’t just o"er physical items to make life better for children. The gifts also present an opportunity to learn about the Gospel. All the children were o"ered “The Greatest Gift of All” booklet with their gifts, which explains the story of Christ and salvation through Him.

Cleveland Court is one of the oldest public housing areas in Montgomery. Taylor Road began our work there 10 years ago as a part of Project Hope. Over the years we have seen children grow up and have been able to minister to the families.

The annual Thanksgiving Meal is a great ministry and outreach tool that the Cleveland Court community looks forward to every year. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, November 19 from Noon to 2:00 p.m., the Saturday before Thanksgiving. We need you there to participate, love on people, and share Christ!

Food donations such as cakes, rolls, and sweet tea will be accepted the week before the meal. Sign up sheets will be in Sunday School classes. Please sign up to setup, serve and counsel.
