The Lord’s Prayer7th Petition: But deliver us from evil.

Chain the Catechism: A topical study through the Lutheran confessions

Memorization Verses: But deliver us from evil. What does this mean? We pray in this petition, in summary, that our Father in heaven would rescue us from every evil of body and soul, possessions and reputation, and finally, when our last hour comes, give us a blessed end, and graciously take us from this valley of sorrow to Himself in heaven.

1 Christ is the world’s Redeemer,The lover of the pure,The fount of heav'nly wisdom,Our trust and hope secure,The armor of His soldiers,The Lord of earth and sky;Our health while we are living,Our life when we shall die.

2 Christ has our host surroundedWith clouds of martyrs bright,Who wave their palms in triumphAnd fire us for the fight. This Christ the cross ascendedTo save a world undone,And, suff'ring for the sinful,

Our full redemption won.

3 Down in the realms of darknessHe strode in victory,And at the hour appointedHe rose triumphantly. And now, to heav'n ascended,He sits upon the throneWhence He had ne'er departed,His Father's and His own.

4 Glory to God the Father,The unbegotten One;All honor be to Jesus,His sole begotten Son,And to the Holy Spirit--The perfect Trinity.Let all the worlds give answer:Amen! So let it be.

Screwtape LettersThe safest road to Hell is the gradual one — the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts. ~C.S. Lewis

Screwtape was a head demon and the Screwtape Letters are a compilation of memos that he sends to one of his underlings named Wormwood. The purpose of each letter from Screwtape is to give individual instructions to Wormwood on ways that he needs to attack, deceive, and thwart the efforts of a person (The Patient) seeking after God.

Take 10 minutes to write your own personalized Screwtape Letter. The assignment is to write a letter to a demon who is assigned to thwart, minimize, and deceive you. What would that strategy look and sound like? In other words, what would the strategy be for preventing you from living effectively for God? If you share your letter, it would only be as a volunteer, so feel free to be authentic and honest in what you write about.

My dear Wormwood,I note with grave displeasure that your patient has become a Christian….

Page 4: 11.11.18 the lord's prayer 7th petition-but deliver us from evil

In the Greek text this petition reads thus: Deliver or preserve us from the Evil One, or the Malicious One; and it looks as if He were speaking of the devil, as though He would comprehend everything in one so that the entire substance of all our prayer is directed against our chief enemy. For it is he who hinders among us everything that we pray for: the name or honor of God, God's kingdom and will, our daily bread, a cheerful good conscience, etc.

From Luther’s Large Cat.: But deliver us from evil. 1/4

Page 5: 11.11.18 the lord's prayer 7th petition-but deliver us from evil

Therefore we finally sum it all up and say: Dear Father pray, help that we be rid of all these calamities. But there is nevertheless also included whatever evil may happen to us under the devil's kingdom -- poverty, shame, death, and, in short, all the agonizing misery and heartache of which there is such an unnumbered multitude on the earth. For since the devil is not only a liar, but also a murderer, he constantly seeks our life, and wreaks his anger whenever he can afflict our bodies with misfortune and harm. Hence it comes that he often breaks men's necks or drives them to insanity, drowns some, and incites many to commit suicide, and to many other terrible calamities. Therefore there is nothing for us to do upon earth but to

pray against this arch enemy without ceasing. For unless God preserved us, we would not be safe from him even for an hour.

From Luther’s Large Cat.: But deliver us from evil. 2/4

Page 6: 11.11.18 the lord's prayer 7th petition-but deliver us from evil

Hence you see again how God wishes us to pray to Him also for all the things which affect our bodily interests, so that we seek and expect help nowhere else except in Him. But this matter He has put last; for if we are to be preserved and delivered from all evil, the name of God must first be hallowed in us, His kingdom must be with us, and His will be done. After that He will finally preserve us from sin and shame, and, besides, from everything that may hurt or injure us.     Thus God has briefly placed before us all the distress which may ever come upon us, so that we might have no excuse whatever for not praying. But all depends upon this, that we learn also to say Amen, that is, that we do not doubt that our prayer is surely heard and [what

we pray] shall be done. For this is nothing else than the word of undoubting faith, which does not pray at a venture, but knows that God does not lie to him, since He has promised to grant it. Therefore, where there is no such faith, there cannot be true prayer either.

From Luther’s Large Cat.: But deliver us from evil. .“3/4

Page 7: 11.11.18 the lord's prayer 7th petition-but deliver us from evil

It is, therefore, a pernicious delusion of those who pray in such a manner that they dare not from the heart say yea and positively conclude that God hears them, but remain in doubt and say, How should I be so bold as to boast that God hears my prayer? For I am but a poor sinner, etc.     The reason for this is, they regard not the promise of God, but their own work and worthiness, whereby they despise God and reproach Him with lying, and therefore they receive nothing. As St. James says [1, 6]: But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering; for he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea, driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive anything of the Lord. Behold, such importance God attaches to the fact that

we are sure we do not pray in vain, and that we do not in any way despise our prayer.

From Luther’s Large Cat.: But deliver us from evil. .“4/4

Prayer Prep: “but deliver us from the evil one.” This is prayer that battles against

Satan, your enemy. Satan tries to discourage you, tempt you to sin, and hinder the good you set out to do. He deceives unbelievers and tries to snatch the truth from their hearts. Jesus, through His death and resurrection, defeated Satan’s power. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross. Colossians 2:15

Read James 4:7. Be sure you are submitted to God’s rule in your life – that you are obedient to Him as far as you are aware. Ask Him to reveal any unconfessed sin and repent of it. This puts you in a protected place.

Prayer Prep: “but deliver us from the evil one.” Persevering Prayer in Spiritual Warfare Read Luke 18:1-8. Answer and discuss

these questions. What is the lesson Jesus is teaching by this

story? What (who) is the hindrance to attaining

justice? What was the widow’s response to the

resistance? What is the ingredient in her response that

overcomes the resistance, and that Jesus praises?

Who is it that will dispense justice, the judge or God?

How is faith shown in this story?

Read Daniel 10:1-14 especially verses 12-13. (The prince of Persia was a powerful demon with authority over the nation of Persia.) Note and discuss the parallels with the story in Luke 18.

Read 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 What strongholds or beliefs do you know

are holding back friends or family members from experiencing God’s love and freedom?

Tear down these strongholds in Jesus’ powerful name. And pray that God will reveal Himself to them. “I pray against every lie and deception of Satan. God, let Your truth break down the barriers.”

PRAYER Psalm 140 1 Rescue me, LORD, from evildoers;    protect me from the violent, 2 who devise evil plans in their hearts    and stir up war every day. 3 They make their tongues as sharp as a serpent’s;    the poison of vipers is on their lips.[b]

 4 Keep me safe, LORD, from the hands of the wicked;    protect me from the violent,    who devise ways to trip my feet. 5 The arrogant have hidden a snare for me;    they have spread out the cords of their net    and have set traps for me along my path. 6 I say to the LORD, “You are my God.”    Hear, LORD, my cry for mercy. 7 Sovereign LORD, my strong deliverer,    you shield my head in the day of battle. 8 Do not grant the wicked their desires, LORD;    do not let their plans succeed. 9 Those who surround me proudly rear their heads;

may the mischief of their lips engulf them. 10 May burning coals fall on them;    may they be thrown into the fire,    into miry pits, never to rise. 11 May slanderers not be established in the land;    may disaster hunt down the violent. 12 I know that the LORD secures justice for the poor    and upholds the cause of the needy. 13 Surely the righteous will praise your name,    and the upright will live in your presence.

LP 6th Petition, Temptation: What Evil?Morality is a biological adaptation no

less than are hands and feet and teeth…considered as a rationally justifable set of claims about an objective something, ethics is illusory. I appreciate what when somebody says « Love they neighbor as thyself, » they think they are referring above and beyond themselves…Neverthless,…such reference is truly without foundation. Morality is just an aid to survival and reproduction…and any deeper meaning is illusory.

LP 6th Petition, Temptation: Screwtape I live in the Managerial Age, in a world of

"Admin." The greatest evil is not now done in those sordid "dens of crime" that Dickens loved to paint. It is not done even in concentration camps and labour camps. In those we see its final result. But it is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice. Hence, naturally enough, my symbol for Hell is something like the bureaucracy of a police state or the offices of a thoroughly nasty business concern.

3. Rescue us (Gk: Rhoumai): To draw out, break chains. Future expectation fulfilled in Christ, witness in the fall of Jerusalem, continuing in tribulation, and awaiting the fruition of the second coming.

4. Evil (Gk: Poneros, Hb: Yetzer Hara): Refers to something that is formed, shaped or designed prior to

execution. Hara refers to the source of this design of evil in man, Satan.

The word Poneros is used in the nominative case in Mt. 6:13. This usually denotes a title in the Greek. Hence Christ is saying, deliver usfrom "The Evil", and is probably referring to Satan.

The seventh petition is a summary petition in which we ask our Father in heaven to rescue us from the devil and all evil which has come into the world because of sin.

Ps. 121:7-8 The Lord will keep you from all harm. He will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.

2 Thess. 3:3 The Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen and protect you from the evil one.

• Pray: O God, You are the only hope of

the world, the only refuge for unhappy men. Abiding in the faithfulness of heaven, give me strong help in this testing place. O King, protect Your man from utter ruin lest

the weak faith surrender to the tyrant, facing innumerable blows alone. Remember I am dust, and wind, and shadow, and life as fleeting as the flower of grass. But may the eternal mercy which has shone from time of old rescue Your servant from the jaws of the lion. You who came from on high in the cloak of flesh, strike down the dragon with that two-edged sword, whereby our mortal flesh can war with the winds and beat down strongholds, with our Captain God. Amen. (Bede of Jarrow, c. 673-735).

LP 6th Petition, Temptation: DiscussionTypes of Evil

Natural Evil: Floods and hurricanes that destroy human lives and dwellings

Moral Evil: Circumstances created that destroy the well-being, empathy, and social contract of society

Spiritual Evil: The plague that is inherant in man; one that forms the moral evils and is mirrored in the natural imbalances in the world. Author is Satan

In a world ruined by sin, the Lord keeps us from harm and he helps us to endure the troubles that He allows to come into our lives.

Acts 14:22 We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God.

Ps. 91:9-10 If you make the Most High your dwelling-even the Lord, who is my refuge-then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent.

2 Cor. 12:9 My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.

Prov. 3:11-12 My son, do not despise the Lord's dis cipline and do not resent His rebuke, because the Lord disciplines those He loves, as a father the son he delights in.

LP 6th Petition, Temptation: Promise?Does God promise to deliver in the

sense that we will never experience outside evil? No, we are actually promised the

opposite. Evil is part of the world in which affliction of the Church reminds us of the humiliation of Christ and to pray for his return.

We are to pray that God remain steadfast in our faith, keeping us from being overcome by the Devil. To call upon the power of the Trinity

and the glory of Christ, who has overcome the evil one on the cross in our place.

Rev. 14:13 Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord.

Rev. 21:4 He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain. for the old order of things has passed away.

Pray: O Lord God, I am weak and fearful. I flee evil and do all I can to guard myself against it. Nevertheless, I am in Your hands in this evil and every other evil that may overtake me. My flight is not enough since evil and misery are everywhere. The devil—who is a murderer from the beginning and always tries to bring misery—never rests nor sleeps. Now You have confined me to this place. Your will be done, for I am Your poor creature. You are able to deliver me in this extreme danger as easily as though I were endangered by fire, water, thirst, or any peril. Amen. (Luther).

There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them. They themselves are equally pleased by both errors and hail a materialist or a magician with the same delight.
