Modern Architecture

What is Modern?

• Less coherent and with much looser boundaries than other styles, modern architecture is technically not even a singular style! Evolving over the years with aspects of many styles and many different Architects working out the ‘style’.

• Worked with by tons of architects and critics, Frank Lloyd Write and Jonathan Glancey as examples.

• "Modernism was not simply a style: but more of an attitude, a determination to break with the past and free the architect from the stifling rules of convention and etiquette."  -Jonathan Glancey

• Can be a commercial building or a residential building.

• Homes are normally 1 or 2 floors, but that does very.

• Commercial buildings depend on the business for floor number.

• Materials varied: to name a few

-Glass

-Steel

-Concrete • Located across the world

Characteristics

• Works with simplification of design, no “unnecessary details”

• Works large amounts of glass• Use of industry produced materials• Visual expression of structure • True to materials, anything visible has a

purpose, be it altered to not be as obvious or not.
