Creekside an Archaeological Novel by Kelli Camean - Wednesday, September 11th, 6:00 p.m. “Creekside” is a novel of historical fiction that alternates between two time periods. In the present, an archaeologist named Meg is running a field school that is excavating beside a creek, in a pasture that is slated for destruction to make way for a new housing subdivision named Creekside. As they excavate, Meg and her student crew uncover the remains of an old log cabin, built by a humble settler family who crossed into the early Kentucky frontier via Cumberland Gap. Through the artifacts the archaeologists unearth, that humble settler family’s story of love, loss and tragedy is told. Partially intertwined story lines link the present and the past, revealing how important family traditions still live on today, even in the face of immense social change. The Bluegrass Files: Down the Rabbit Hole by F J Messina - Thursday, October 3rd, 6:00 p.m. Sonia Vitale is new at the PI game; she’s got a quirky partner; and she’s working with her handsome competition. But can she survive long enough to trust in love again? What Sonia uncovers as she surveils a small Kentucky horse farm sends her on a journey she could never have imagined. Speeding cars, bullets, secret codes and mysterious voices burst into her life. And the most challenging conundrum of all – two very different men, each of whom enflames her Italian passions. Come along for the ride as Sonia takes her first steps on a dangerous, action-packed journey that will eventually lead her from novice PI to consummate yet compassionate professional.

President’s News Greetings to all! Hope everyone is enjoying our pre-fall weather and looking forward to the change in seasons! Fall is my favorite season--even though I don't look forward to the chill of winter. I do welcome all of our Homemakers coming back together again after a summer break. Thanks to all that participated in the recent Homemaker Bash last week! We had loads of fun....great food....fun BINGO/prizes and tons of information shared from our committees and community partners as they prepared special displays. Great work ladies! Our new theme for the year is the "Sun Shines Bright"--from the KEHA theme--using the bright and warm sun as our logo and bright color/yellow. How appropriate as we think bright and positive thoughts for the year with our Homemakers groups and special projects. Again--I cannot emphasize OCTOBER 25 enough as we will be entertaining nine counties for our big area meeting. We will need help from all groups! Thanks to our planning committee as they share and make final arrangements. If you can donate some time during a few of their planned work days (see the newsletter) it would be appreciated! There will be plenty of work to do to pull this event off. The next Board meeting is also October 1st. Also please continue to take advantage of new fall classes and workshops. Continue to share the word out on Homemakers and help build our membership--October is also "Membership" month. Start making an early Christmas lift and give a mailbox membership to that special friend, co-worker, sitter, or to someone to say "Thanks" You cannot beat it for $8.00!!! Let's have a great year! Be blessed and let's spread a little sunshine to brighten up someone's day! President Alyce Emerson

Tailgating Food Safety Whether you’re enjoying Friday night lights in your hometown or Saturdays at a college game, football and tailgating go hand-in-hand for many fans. But unsafe food handling practices during your tailgating event could have you sidelined by game time. To keep your guests and yourself safe from foodborne illnesses, follow these tips:

Wash your hands. Handwashing is the single most effective way to prevent the spread of disease-causing bacteria. Parking lots don’t have access to running water so bring your own handwash station. Portable water jugs with a spigot can be found in the drinking water aisle of most grocery stores. Bring along liquid soap, paper towels and a bucket to catch waste water. Wash your hands before and after preparing food and especially after using portable restrooms. Always wash your hands before eating, and encourage your tailgating friends to wash their hands before eating.

Keep cold foods cold. You should keep perishable food below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Use insulated coolers and plenty of ice or frozen gel packs to keep meat, poultry, sandwiches, dairy and deli salads cold. If you plan on grilling, keep the raw meat separated from ready-to-eat products and drinks. Use two coolers and designate one for raw ingredients and one for ready-to-eat.

Keep hot foods hot. Cooked foods should stay above 140 degrees F. Food can be kept hot in disposable pans on the grill. You may also use insulated containers or Sterno heaters to keep casseroles and other cooked foods hot. If electricity is available, slow cookers are a great option for keeping foods like chili and homemade dips hot.

When grilling, use a metal stemmed thermometer to make sure your meats reach the correct internal temperature before taking them off the grill. You should cook all poultry should to 165 degrees F and ground meats (burgers) to 160 degrees F. Roasts, steaks and chops of beef, pork, lamb and veal should be cooked to 145 degrees F. Hot dogs and bratwurst should be cooked to 165 degrees F. Never use color as an indicator of doneness.

Eat prepared food within two hours. If the temperature is over 90 degrees F, consume the food within an hour. Discard leftovers in trash cans with plastic liners and lids before heading into the stadium. After returning home, clean and sanitize all of your food preparation equipment including coolers, thermometers and

utensils. For more food safety information, contact Fayette County office of the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service.
