Break:When a team quicklyadvances the ball down thefield in an attempt to get itsplayers near the opponent'sgoal before the defendershave a chance to retreat; also
called an advantage.Breakaway:
When an attacker with the
ball approaches the goalundefended; this exciting playpits a sole attacker againstthe goalkeeper in a one-on-one showdown.
Bundesliga:The German professionalsoccer league.

Carrying the ball: )((a foul called on a goalkeeperwhen he takes more than 4steps while holding orbouncing the ball.

Center:a pass from a player locatednear the sideline towards themiddle of the field; used to
get the ball closer to the frontof the goal; also called a
cross.
Center circle:a circular marking with a 10-yard radius in the center ofthe field from which kickoffsare taken to start or restartthe game.
Center line:see Midfield line.
Center spot:
a small circular mark inside
the center circle that denotesthe center of the field from
which kickoffs are taken tostart or restart the game.
Central defender:A player who guards the area
directly in front of his owngoal in a zone defense; does
not exist in a man-to-mandefense.
Charge:to run into an opponent; legalif done from the front or sideof the ball carrier; illegalagainst a player without theball or from behind.
Chest trap:
when a player uses his chestto slow down and control aball in the air.
Chip pass:a pass lofted into the air froma player to a teammate; usedprimarily to evade a defenderby kicking the ball over his
head.
Chip shot: a kick loftedinto the air to tryto sail the ball over thegoalkeeper's head and stillmake it under the crossbarinto the goal.
Clear:to kick the ball away fromone's goal.

Club:a team that plays in a league.
Consolation match:a tournament game playedbetween the losers of the 2semifinal matches todetermine the third-placeteam.
Corner area:see Corner arc.
Corner flag:The flag located at each of the4 corners of the field, insidethe corner area.
Corner kick:a type of restart where theball is kicked from the cornerarc in an attempt to score;awarded to an attacking teamwhen the ball crosses the goalline last touched by the
defending team.
Counterattack: an attack launched by adefending team soon after itregains possession of the ball.
Creating space:when a player from theattacking teammoves without
the ball to draw defendersaway from the ball carrierandgive him space.
Cross or crossing pass:a pass from an attacking
player near the sideline to ateammate in the middle oropposite side of the field;used to give the teammate agood scoring opportunity.
Crossbar:
the horizontal beam thatforms the top of a goal andsits on top of the two posts; it
is 24 feet long and supported8 feet above the ground.
Cut down the angle:)( when the goalie comes out ofthe goal several feet to makehimself closer and larger to anattacker, leaving the attackerless net to shoot at.
Cut off:when a defensive player
keeps his body between anattacker and the defender's
goal, forcing the attacker outtowards the sidelines.

Dangerous play:when a player attempts a playthat the referee considersdangerous to that player orothers, such as trying to kickthe ball out of the goalie's
hands, even if no contact ismade.
Defenders:the players on the team thatdoes not have possession ofthe ball.
Defending team:the team that does not have
possessionof the ball.
Defense:a team's function ofpreventing the oppositionfrom scoring.
Defensemen:the 3 or 4 players on a team
whose primary task is to stopthe opposition from scoring;also called fullbacks.

Defensive midfielder:the player positioned just infront of his team's defense;he is often assigned to markthe opposition's best offensiveplayer; also called themidfield anchor.
Defensive pressure:When one or more defenders
closely mark a ball carrier toharass him into losing the
ball.
Deflection:the ricochet of a ball after it
hits a player.
Direct free kick:A kick awarded to a player fora serious foul committed bythe opposition; the playerkicks a stationary ball with noopposing players within 10
yards of him; a goal can bescored directly from this kick
without the ball touchinganother player.
Draw:a game that ends with a tiedscore.
The Draw:The selection of World Cupteams to place them intoplaying groups for thetournament and the eventsurrounding this selection.
Dribbler: A player who advances theball while controlling it withhis feet.
Dribbling:
The basic skill of advancingthe ball with the feet whilecontrolling it.
Drop ball:A method of restarting agame where the refereedropsthe ball between 2 players
facing each other.

a move by a player meant todeceive an opposing player;used by a ball carrier to makea defender think the ball
carrier is going to dribble,pass or shoot in a certain
direction when he is not.
Far post:the goalpostfurthest from theball.
Field:the rectangular area wheresoccer matchesare played.
FIFA:Federation Internationale de
Football Association theofficial governing body ofinternational soccer since1904 which established theWorld Cup tournament; helps
set and revise rules of thegame, called the 17 Laws.
FIFA World Cup:a solid gold statue given tothe champion of each World
Cup tournament to keep forthe next 4 years.

Foot trap:a player's use of his foot tocontrol a rolling or low-bouncing ball.
Formation:The arrangement intopositions of players on the
field; for example, a 4-3-3formation places 4 defenders,3 midfielders and 3 forwardson the field.
Forward line: the 3 or 4 forwards who worktogether to try and scoregoals; consists of two wingersand 1 or 2 strikers.
Forward pass:a pass made towards theopposition's goal.
Forwards:the 3 or 4 players on a teamwho are responsible for mostof a team's scoring; they playin front of the rest of theirteam where they can take
most of its shots; strikers andwingers.
Foul:A violation of the rules forwhich an official assesses a
free kick.
--:4-2-4A formation that consists of 4defenders, 2 midfielders and 4forwards.
--:4-3-3a formation that consists of 4defenders, 3 midfielders and 3
forwards; the most commonformation used by teams.
--:4-4-2A formation that consists of 4defenders, 4 midfielders and 2forwards.
Free kick:a kick awarded to a player fora foul committed by theopposition; the player kicks astationary ball without any
opposing players within 10yards of him.
-G-Goal:
A ball that crosses the goalline between the goalpostsand below the crossbar for
which a point is awarded;also, the 8-foot high, 24-foot
wide structure consisting oftwo posts, a crossbar and anet into which all goals arescored.
Goal area:the rectangular area 20 yardswide by 6 yards deep in frontof each goal from which allgoal kicks are taken; insidethis area, it is illegal foropposing players to charge agoalie not holding the ball.
Goal kick:a type of restart where theball is kicked from inside thegoal area away from the goal;awarded to the defendingteam when a ball that crossedthe goal line was last touchedby a player on the attacking
team.

Goal line:The field boundary runningalong its width at each end;also called the end line; runsright across the front of thegoal; the line which a ballmust completely cross for a
goal to be scored.
Goalie:see Goalkeeper.
Goalkeeper:The player positioned directly
in front of the goal who triesto prevent shots from gettinginto the net behind him; theonly player allowed to use hishands and arms, though onlywithin the penalty area.
Goalmouth:The front opening to each
goal.
Goalposts:The two vertical beamslocated 24 feet apart whichextend 8 feet high to form the
sides of a goal and supportthe crossbar.

Halftime:
The intermission between the2 periods or halves of a game.
Halves:see Periods.
Hand ball: a foulwhere a player touchesthe ball with his hand or arm;
the opposing team is awardeda direct free kick.
Hat trick: )(3 or more goals scored in agame by a single player.

when a ball is within theboundaries of the field, havingnot completely crossed asideline or goal line.
In play:When a ball is within the
boundaries of the field andplay has not been stopped bythe referee.
Indirect free kick:A kick awarded to a player for
a less-serious foul committedby the opposition; the playerkicks a stationary ball withoutany opposing players within10 yards of him; a goal can
only be scored on this kickafter the ball has touched
another player.
Injury time:)(Time added to the end of anyperiod according to thereferee's judgment of timelost due to player injuries orintentional stalling by a team.
Instep drive:a straight shot taken with theinstep of a player's foot;usually the most powerful andaccurate of shots.

Lead pass: A pass sent ahead of a
moving teammate to arrive ata location at the same time he
does.League:
An alliance of teams thatorganizes sporting
competition.
Linesmen: --the 2 officials who assist thereferee in making hisdecisions; they monitor the
sidelines and goal lines todetermine when a ball goesout of bounds and they carrya flag to signal their
observations.
Loft or lob:

Man-to-man:A type of defense where each
defender is assigned to marka different forward from theother team; the mostcommon type of defense fornational-level teams.
Marking: )(-Guarding a player to preventhim from advancing the balltowards the net, making aneasy pass or getting the ball
from a teammate.
Match:A soccer game.
Midfield:the region of the field nearthe midfield line; the area
controlled by the midfielders.
Midfielders:the 2, 3 or 4 players who linktogether the offensive anddefensive functions of a team;they play behind theirforwards.
Mismatch:when a particular offensiveplayer is far superior to thedefender marking him.

Near post:The goalpost closest to theball.
Net:hemp, jute or nylon corddraped over the frame of the
goaland extending behind it;also used to refer to the goalitself.

Obstruction:- When a defensive player,instead of going after the ball,uses his body to prevent anoffensive player from playingit.
Offense:The function of trying to score
goals.
Offensive player: see Attacker.
Offensive team:see Attackingteam.
Official game clock:The clock that the refereecarries with him on the fieldso he can signal when each
half is over; does not stopduring the game, even whenplay does.
Officials: )(the referee and 2 linesmen
who work together to makesure the game is played
according to the rules ofsoccer; responsible for
stopping and restarting play,keeping track of the score andthe time remaining and citing
violations of the rules, calledfouls; they wear uniforms thatdistinguish them from the
players on both teams.
Offside:a violation called when aplayer in an offside position
receives a pass from ateammate; an indirect freekick is awarded to the non-offending team.
Offside position:an attacking player positioned
so that fewer than 2 opposingdefensive players (usually the
goalie and 1 other defender)are between him and the goalhe is attacking; a player is notoffside if he is exactly evenwith one or both of thesedefensive players.
On defense:Describes a team that doesnot have possession of theball.
On offense: Describes a team in
possessionof the ball.
Open:
describes an attacking player-who does not have anyonemarking him.
Out of bounds:When a ball is outside theboundaries of the field, havingcompletely crossed a sidelineor goal line.

Professional foul:
A foul committedintentionally, usually by a
defender on an attacker justoutside the defender's penaltyarea; used to prevent ascoring opportunity withoutincurring a penalty shot.
Push pass:when a player pushes the ball
with the inside of his foot to ateammate.
-Q-Qualifying Draw:
the division of teams intogroups for World Cupqualifying matches, held 2years before The Draw.
Qualifying matches: )(Games played in the 2 yearspreceding the World Cup todetermine which teamsparticipate in the tournament.

Receiver:a player who gets a pass from
a teammate.
Red card:a playing card-sized card that
a referee holds up to signal aplayer's removal from the
game; the player's team mustplay the rest of the gameshorthanded; presented forviolent behavior or multiplerule infractions (two yellow
cards = one red card).
Referee:the chief official; he makes allfinal decisions, acts astimekeeper, calls all fouls andstarts and stops play.
Round:a stage of a tournament at
which teams compete; theWorld Cup tournament has 5main rounds.
Rugby: an offshoot from soccer
started in the early 1800s;rugby players are allowed topick up the ball with theirhands and run with it, andalso make full contact witheach other whether goingafter the ball or not.

Save: The act of a goalkeeper inblocking or stopping a shot
that would have gone into thegoal without his intervention.
Score: To put the ball into the net fora goal; also, the tally of goalsfor each team playing in agame.
Scorers: players who score goals.
Scoring opportunity:- A situation where a team
stands a good chance ofscoring a goal.

Substitution:
replacement of one player onthe field with another playernot on the field; FIFA rulesallow only 3 substitutions pergame.
Sudden death:)(a type of overtimewhere thefirst goal scored by a teamends the game and gives thatteam the victory; mostovertime in soccer is not
sudden death.
Sweeper:-the defender that playsclosest to his own goal behindthe rest of the defenders; ateam's last line of defense infront of the goalkeeper.

Tackling:the act of taking the ball awayfrom a player by kicking or
stopping it with one's feet;only a minimal amount ofshoulder-to-shoulder contact,called a charge ), is permitted
to knock the ball carrier offbalance.
3-on-1 break:a type of break with 3
attacking playersagainst only1 defensive player.
3-on-2 break:A type of break with 3attacking players against 2
defensive players.
Through pass:a pass sent to a teammate toget him the ball behind hisdefender; used to penetrate aline of defenders.
Throw-in:a type of restart where a
player throws the ball frombehind his head with twohands while standing withboth feet on the groundbehind a sideline; taken by a
player opposite the team thatlast touched the ball before it
went out of bounds across asideline.
Tie game:when two teams have scoredthe same number of goals in amatch; if the game ends tied,it is a draw.
Tiebreaker:a way to choose the winner ofa match when teams are tiedafter overtime; in FIFAtournament play, a series ofpenalty kicks are taken by
players from both teams, andthe team that scores on more
of them is declared thewinner.
Timekeeper:The job of the referee, whokeeps track of the official time
to notify teams and fans wheneach period is completed.
Timeout: )(an official break in the actionof a sport; the rules of soccerdo not allow for any timeouts;timeouts for television
advertising breaks are

reducing the amount of opengoal area the kicker has toshoot at.
Wall pass: a pass by a ball carrier who
sends the ball to a teammate,then runs behind his own
defender and quickly receivesa pass back; used to get aplayer past his defenderwithout having to dribble byhim; same as the "give-and-go" in basketball.
Win-draw-loss record:a summary of the outcomesof a team's matches; for
example, a team with a 3-1-2record has played 6 games
and won 3, tied 1 and lost 2.
Wings or wingers:The outside forwards whoplay to the sides of the
strikers and whose primarytask is to provide them withaccurate crossing passes sothey can shoot at the goal;often the fastest players andbest dribblers on a team.

Yellow card: a playing card-sized card thata referee holds up to warn a
player for dangerous orunsportsmanlike behavior;also called a caution; 2 yellowcards in one game earns aplayer an automatic red card,signaling his removal from thegame.
