A MESSAGE FROM FR. TIM

2 PALM SUNDAY - MARCH 20, 2016

Once again, we have the well-known story of the woman

caught in the act of adultery. In this passage the Scribes

and the Pharisees are trying to trap Jesus so that they can

bring an accusation against him. Knowing the law and the

punishment for breaking the law, they ask Jesus what his

opinion is on the matter. He very calmly says to them; “let

the one without sin cast the first stone.” They all walk away

one by one starting with the elders. I think the lesson is very

obvious here, so why do we judge one another?

Many years ago I was at a lecture at which the presenter

made a statement that I did not understand at the time. He

said sin was positive. I had no idea what he meant. Since

that time I believe I have come to understand what he

meant. To have sinned we know that we have done some-

thing wrong and we know that there is a better way of do-

ing things. I believe if we own our sinfulness and, not in the

sense of condemning ourselves but in a manner of growth,

we will be more compassionate with other sinners. It re-

minds me of the parable of the two people who went up

the hill to pray. The Pharisee said, “O God I thank you that

I am not like the rest of humanity—greedy, dishonest, adul-

terous—or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week,

and I pay tithes on my whole income.” The tax collector on

the other hand prayed, “O God be merciful to me a sin-

ner.” The sad thing about this parable is that the Pharisee

does not recognize his sin and the tax collector does not

recognize his goodness. Consequently the Pharisee sits in

judgment of others.

In one of my assignments, I met this woman who was well-

known in the community. She had several children. She and

the father of the children were divorced. She had obtained

an annulment through the church and remarried in the

church. The town was buzzing about this. The woman said to

me; “Father, you know, they have never walked in my

shoes.

I have never forgotten that statement as it

was loaded with such truth.

I wonder as we continue this Lenten journey

if we could consider what the prophet

Isaiah says to us in Chapter 58. In this par-

ticular passage Isaiah talks to us about

fasting. “Does the Lord want a fast that

ends in sin, quarrelling, fighting, or striking

with the wicked claw? No he is looking for

a fasting that releases those bound unjustly,

untying the thongs of the yoke, setting free

the oppressed.” Judgment of another, on

the other hand, often leaves the judged

tied up and oppressed. I wonder during

the last two weeks of the Lenten Season if

we could not keep in our prayer the two

statements; “let the one without sin cast the

first stone,” and “they have not walked in

my shoes.” I wonder if we gave those

statements prayerful thought if it would not

make a difference, causing us to be less

judgmental and more compassionate.

Remember, “let the one without sin cast the

first stone,” and “they have not walked in

my shoes.”

Fr. Tim

Catholic Appeal 2016

The 2016 Catholic Appeal response from St. Margaret’s and Blessed Sacrament is off to a good start as both parishes are nearly half way to their goals. At St. Margaret’s, 34 do-nors have contributed $8,310 towards a goal of $18,828 or 44%. At Blessed Sacrament, 67 donors have contributed $13,320 towards a goal of $28,537 or 47%. These donations are used to support more than 50 ministries which serve the needs of all parishes within our Arch-diocese, including both parishes of our Saugus Collaborative. These ministries have a pro-found influence on the lives of so many by help-ing to pass on our faith to young and new Catholics, by supporting the priests, deacons, seminarians and other religious and all those who offer their lives to serve us. If you did not receive a pledge form in the mail, please pick one up at the church or the Collaborative Of-fices.

Mass of Anointing SPONSORED BY SAINT STEPHEN MINISTRY

On Saturday, April 23rd, there will be a Mass of Anointing at 11:00 AM celebrated in the Blessed Sacrament Parish Hall. The Liturgy will be immediately followed by a luncheon. This Sacrament is an important encounter with Jesus who walks with us as we deal with the often difficult limitations that affect us in illness or as we get older. The Sacrament is to be celebrated with those who are seriously ill, undergoing surgery, or advanced in years. The celebration of the sacrament within the Mass includes the Priest laying of his hands over ones head, the offering of prayer by the community of faith and the anointing with the blessed oil. It is also an opportunity for us as members of the community to acknowledge the gift of your presence in our midst and to reach out to you in a small way with our love and concern.

Please let us know of your plans to attend by calling the Collaborative Office or email Kathie Lanney no later than April 4th ([email protected]).

All Are Welcome! Please join us and bring a friend.

The Sacred Triduum March 24 - March 25 - March 26

In the Sacred Triduum, the Church solemnly celebrates the greatest mysteries of our redemption, keeping by means of special celebrations the memorial of the Lord, crucified, buried, and risen. The celebration of the Triduum begins with the celebration of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday and concludes with the celebration the Lord’s Resurrection at the Easter Vigil. Consequently each liturgy, during the three days, builds upon one another. We start with the washing of feet, the institution of the Eucharist, followed by His betrayal and crucifixion, and culminating with His resurrection. The celebrations are solemn and are to be celebrated with the greatest of reverence and dignity. The participation of the faithful is essential and there are many ways that one can actively partake in these celebrations. On Thursday Evening, as we recall Jesus’ washing the feet of the apostles, we are all encouraged to take part in it. There will be five stations at which one can have his/her feet washed as well as have an opportunity to wash another’s feet. Simply go to one of the foot washing stations located at the front of the church and at the break and be seated in the chair in the aisle. Someone will assist you. Remove your shoes and socks. After having had your feet washed and dried, then, if you wish, wait for the next person to be seated and wash and dry their feet, then return in prayer to your seat. Once everyone has had the opportunity to receive the Eucharist, the Blessed Sacrament will be transferred to a tabernacle in the Hall. The Blessed Sacrament will remain there until 10:00 PM. You are invited to answer the invitation of Jesus to stay and pray. At 10:00 PM all present will pray Night Prayer. You are asked to leave, both the liturgy and evening prayer, in silence.

On Friday Evening, we continue our celebration with the Lord’s Passion. The service begins in silence with a Prostration of the ministers and kneeling of the congregation. On this evening, we are invited to venerate the cross. This ritual happens after the reading of the Passion, homily and prayer of the faithful. It is an opportunity for us to openly recognize what the Lord has done for us. As a gesture of humility, you are invited to approach the cross in bare feet and venerate the cross in a manner with which you are comfortable.

On Saturday Evening, we start with the blessing the fire, lighting of the Paschal Candle and procession into a darkened church. As the procession progresses the Light of Christ is spread throughout the church. We retrace our salvation history in the Scriptures, bless the water for Baptisms and renewal of Baptismal promises. Sacraments of Holy Communion and Confirmation are celebrated. As a people renewed by our Lenten Sacrifices, we gather around His table to share in the Eucharist, His ultimate gift and sacrifice. Please consider taking part in these rituals that we may enter into the celebrations and share in a deeper way in what the Lord has done for all of us.

Meet Fr. Tom—Bringing Christ to All AgesWhen Fr. Tom Macdonald walks through the streets of Dorchester, people don’t see just a young friendly face. They see a priest.

It’s been three years since Fr. Tom was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Boston. Yet in that short time, he has become a trusted and respected friend, neighbor, and priest at the St. Ann/St. Brendan parish collaborative. “Many of the good people in these close-knit communities have seen so much more of life than I have,” says Fr. Tom, “but it’s their faith in the priesthood, their faith in the Church, and their faith in Christ that enables them to see Christ in me. It is a beautiful gift that I feel blessed to receive new again each day.”

To see Fr. Tom’s story, visit clergyfunds.org.

Our priests are there for us and our families without question or hesitation. Please show your gratitude and consider making a generous gift to your parish collection this Easter.

Thank you for helping to ensure a continuum of care and quality of life for all our active and senior priests.
