ABSTRACT
After years of development and improvement, network based on IPv4 (Internet Protocol
version 4) has proven to be a mature technology, easy to implement and has a good
network protocol interoperability. One can say that it has achieved great success.
However, with the rapid development of new Internet services and the emergence of new
business, there are shortcomings in the current IPv4, such as the lack of address space,
the rapid expansion of the routing table, the lack of mobile network quality of service and
support for a range of issues. 32 bit IPv4 address i.e. up to 2 32
addresses can be divided
into about 4.3 billion devices. By the end of 2012, there will be 6.2 billion of population
so there is a need to migrate from this IPv4 version to IPv6.
To meet the future growth in the Telecommunications and Internet space, National
Institute of Technology, Hamirpur (HP) being a constituent of ministry of HRD,
Department of Higher Education, Govt. of India is also required to implement IPv6 at
NIT Hamirpur
In this project, we present some mechanisms that have been implemented to ease this
transition especially for IPv4 users that still want to communicate with their old
applications. We have set up a test bench on an IPv4 to IPv6 tunneling and dual stack
mechanism on CISCO routers and switches that transparently establish a hybrid
communications between the two worlds in both ways and have some advantages over
the other models. We also implement a mechanism to implement an ipv6 tunneling oven
ipv4 network that will be efficient on a large scale. After doing the case study of NIT
Hamirpur campus network, we also propose a migration plan of the campus network
from IPv4 to IPv6.

INTRODUCTION
In the early 1990s it became apparent that the 32-bit address size of the IPv4 protocol
would be too small in the long run, so the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) started
work on an updated version of IP with larger addresses, IPv6. Unfortunately, the resulting
protocol is not backward compatible with IPv4, so there is a need for tools to allow the
transition from IPv4 to IPv6 and the coexistence of the two protocols
The purpose of the project is to study the existing transition techniques that are used for
communication between two network having different internet protocols IPv4 and IPv6
and then create a test bench having the best techniques implemented on the various
network devices. We have studied the three techniques used for IPV4 to IPv6 transition
tunneling, dual stack and NAT PT.
We have created a small test bench consisting of three CISCO 2800 routers with one
router working on IPv4 and other two on dual stack, two CATALYST switches both on
dual stack and two end hosts. After studying all the tunneling methods, we have
implemented IPV4 to IPv6 tunnel to establish the end to end communications between
the two end hosts.
We have also mentioned a tunneling technique called IPv6 over IPv4 for the bigger
networks. After doing the case study of NIT Hamirpur network, we have examined the
necessary changes needed to migrate NIT-Hamirpur network from IPv4 to IPv6.

OBJECTIVES
The project has the following objectives:
To study the router and switch configurations.
To study about the various IPv4 to IPv6 transition mechanisms.
To create a test bench having IPv4 and IPv6 network and to establish a
communication between the two networks.
To study the network of NIT-Hamirpur and propose the modification needed to
migrate the network to IPv6.
