HEW production range

HEW have been producing asynchronous motors for over 115 years. Our production range includes the following:

• Explosion-protected three-phase A.C. motors

• Explosion-protected three-phase A.C. motors with brake

• Standard three-phase A.C. motors (see catalogue series R)

• Standard pole-changing three-phase A.C. motors (see catalogue series R)

• Standard pole-changing three-phase A.C. motors fan drives (see catalogue series R)

• Reluctance motors (see catalogue series R)

• Single-phase motors (see catalogue series R)

• Brake motors (see catalogue series R)

• Rotary field magnets (see catalogue series R)

Our motors are suitable for inverter operation due to a high-grade insulation system. They are produced in thermal class F and fitted with PTC - resistor as standard (other temperature monitoring elements available on request).

The use of three-phase A.C. motors in demanding drive systems often requires the installation of feedback elements. HEW can also supply motors with incremental encoders on request from the customer. These encoders can be fitted to either explosion-protected three-phase A.C. motors or explosion-protected three-phase A.C. brake motors.

The motors are produced with protection class IP 55 as standard. Higher protection classes can be optionally supplied. (see page 1/9).

Versions produced in line with other standards, regulation and directive (e.g. GOST-R, VIK or GL) can be supplied on request.

Primer / lacquerHEW motors are provided with a primer as standard. The primer is a polyacrylic-based dual-component product and low in solvent content. The quick-drying primer coat can be applied as an undercoat, primer or primer filler to all metallic surfaces.

The motors can also be supplied with synthetic resin lacquer (RAL table) on request. Special lacquers with dual-component lacquers are also available.

Gas explosion protection

Ignition temperature - Temperature classNumerous factors, such as size, shape, type and quality of the surface, influence the ignition temperature. IEC; CENELEC and other standards authorities have agreed on a process set out in IEC 60079-4 for determining the ignition temperature which comes very close to the lowest, practically possible value. It allocates gasses and vapours to temperature classes. These temperature classes are used to construct electrical equipment and other technological installations to rule out the possibility of a surface temperature ignition. The standards set out the permissible ex-ceedances and compulsory lower deviations from these control values. The normal version of the motors is equivalent to the highest group IIC and the temperature class T4 which include all lower groups and temperature classes. Motors in temperature class T4 deliver the output as standard motors without explosion protection of the same construction size. On request, motors can also be supplied in temperature classes T5 and T6 in which case the permitted housing temperature has to be taken into account and the rated power adjusted as necessary.

Dust explosion protection

Surface temperature - Protection classAn essential characteristic of dust explosion protection is the IP protection class. The motor is subject to different requirements for dust-tightness depending on the ambient conditions. The limitation of the surface temperature of motors to a value which is below the ignition and smouldering temperature of the present dust is important to dust explosion protection. Maintenance of explosion protection

Maintenance of explosion protection during operation:Electrical machine must be protected from overheating caused by overloads. The motor protection depends on both the operating mode and the use of the electrical machine.

Explosion-protected electric motors are generally approved for operating mode S1, i.e. continuous operation. Other operating modes are only permitted if the motor temperature is monitored by reliable devices.

Explosion-protected electric motors

Explosion-protected motors can be used in industrial plants in which explosive atmospheres which contain combustible vapours, gasses or dust (e.g. in the chemicals industry, oil refineries etc.) and in coal mines in which methane gasses are present.

These are three-phase AC asynchronous motors with squirrel cage which are pressure-tight as per standard EN 60079 (gas explosion protection) and DIN EN 50281 (dust explosion protection).

The housings of the motors are pressure-tight enclosures constructed as per EN 60079-1. The terminal boxes can also be constructed as "pressure-tight enclosures" as per EN 60079-1 or with "increased safety" as per EN 60079-7.

The following standards and regulations are adhered to when designing, manufacturing and testing electric motors.

Construction types

The construction types of electric motors and their symbols comply with the standards EN 60034-7. Our motors are available in basic construction types IM B3, IM B5 and IM B14.The table shows the symbols and the installation options of the standard models we manufacture. The type IM B3 motors can also be operated in the mounting positions IM B6, IM B7 and IM B8. As well as the flange sizes allocated in line with the standard, a number of other flange sizes can also be supplied (see page 1/11). On all construction types with the shaft end at the bottom the version "with safety cover" must be selected in order to prevent foreign bodies from falling in.

IP protection classes

The protection classes of circulating electric machines are denoted by an abbreviation in line with EN 60034-5. It consists of the letter IP (international protection) and two numbers.

1st number ( 0 to 6 ): Protection level for contact and foreign body protection.

2nd number ( 0 to 8 ): Protection level for water protection.

The motors are constructed with protection class IP 55. Motors can be supplied with a higher protection class on request.

Protection from solids and liquids: IP protection class

Protection class Protection from contact and the penetration of solid substances (first number)

IP 55 / IP 56 Full protection from contact with live and moving internal parts.Protection from penetration from dust. The penetration of dust is not completely prevented but cannot take on such a scale as to have a negative effect on operation of the machine.

IP 65* Complete protection from contact with live or moving internal parts.Penetration of dust is fully prevented.

Protection class Protection from penetration of water (second number)

IP 55 / IP65* The motor is protected from jets of water from all directions.

IP56 Machine protected from heavy seas. Water from heavy seas or a strong jet of water must not penetrate into the housing in damaging quantities.

* All vertically installed motors with an open shaft end at the top must be protected in such a way that no foreign objects can fall into the fan cover from above. However, this protection is not necessary if the machine is fitted with such a protective mechanism itself. Motors installed in the open must be protected from direct sunlight.

Bearing lubrication

The standard version motors are fitted with permanently lubricated bearings. Any deviation from the nominal operating temperature for the motors has an influence on the service life of the bearings.(In case of extreme conditions for use, adhere to the recommendations of the manufacturer)

Motors with lubricating equipment

Motors from construction size 160 and above can be fitted with lubricating equipment. The lubrication intervals for these motors have to be adhered to and the named types of grease must be used. After lubricating, the bearing should be run without a load to distribute the grease.

The effectiveness of the bearing lubrication should be checked by measuring the temperature on the bearing shield with the motor running. If the measured temperature exceeds +80 degrees C, the lubricating intervals have to be shortened. Lubrication intervals should be halved for every 15 K in the temperature increase. If this is not possible, special lubricants for very high temperatures should be used.

Power, voltage and frequency

The data in the technical tables relate to continuous operation (S1 as per EN 60034-1) of the motors at rated voltage, rated frequency, coolant temperature up to + 40°C and an installed height of < 1000 m above sea level.

Voltage fluctuations of up to ± 5 % and frequency fluctuations of up to ± 2% are permitted. Within this tolerance range the power data remains unchanged and the maximum permitted temperature of the winding is not exceeded.

On request motors for rated voltages from 110V to 690V and rated frequencies from 50Hz to 60Hz can be supplied. The motors de-signed for voltages of 380V, 400V and 415V and a frequency of 50Hz can also be operated in the range of 440V and 480V at a frequency of 60 Hz. The load can be increased to 15%. The speed is around 20% higher whilst the starting torque and maximum torque are around 18% lower.

Pay attention to the following when selecting the ideal motor output:Required output of the working machine; operation mode; starting, braking and reversing operation, progression of torque of the work-ing machine; power supply conditions (FC operation); cooling, coolant temperature; installed height.

Heating and thermal classes

The selection of individual components for the insulation system is determined by the allocation into thermal classes as per EN 60034-1.

The motor's stator windings are designed as per thermal class F. The stator windings are manufactured with phase insulation of high-grade enamelled wire and resin varnish for impregnating. The high electrical strength which this achieves ensures that the motors can be used problem-free with the frequency converter.

On request motors can also be supplied for use in extreme operating conditions or high switching frequency with a winding for thermal class H.

Connections

The winding on motors with a nominal output of up to 2.2kW are designed for a 400V star connection. Motors with a higher output are designed for a 400V delta connection (star delta start-up) Pole-changing motors with a speed ration of 2:1 are designed with Dahlader pole changing connection (separate winding available on request). Other pole rations are realised with two separate windings in a star connection.

Overload

The motors are designed so that they can be overloaed 1.5 times for two minutes once operating temperature has been reached without damage being caused.

Instructions for installation

Mains connection and commissioning of motors with EEx e terminal box.The motors are supplied with approved screwed cable glands as standard. Mains connection and commissioning of motors with EEx d terminal box.The motors have to be connected using suitable cables and cable entries as per EN 60079-1. Unused openings must be sealed as per EN 60079-1. Cables, screwed cable glands and sealing plugs which do not meet with these requirements must not be used.

Rotation

The motors can generally be used for both rotation directions. The winding ends U1, V1, W1 of the motors are designed so that the order L1, L2, L3 results in clockwise rotation when connected to the three-phase mains. Swapping two outer conductors (e.g. L1 with L2) results in anti-clockwise rotation. The rotation direction is stated as looking at the shaft mirror (DS).

Earthing and protective ground

The motors have protective ground connection in the terminal box and an additional external ground terminal on the motor housing.

Three-phase A.C. motors

Operation on the inverter

The use of an inverter makes it possible to set and adjust the speed of asynchronous three-phase AC motors continuously variably. Careful planning is key to ideally adapting the converter and motor. The pressurised HEW motors can be used in a frequency range of 5 Hz to 87 Hz. The PTC-resistor, which is installed as standard has to be used as the only form of motor protection.

The choice of motor is based primarily on the desired speed range and the progression of the characteristic curve of torque of the working machine. The most critical operating point has to be determined during planning and the motor construction size and number of poles selected accordingly. The most critical operating point is often at the lowest frequency as the reduced cooling of the internally ventilated motor means torque has to be reduced compared to nominal torque. However, it can also be in field weakening mode if the motor is used for this mode.

If the voltage on the inverter is increased proportionally with the frequency, the flow remains constant and the motor can be operated with constant torque (taking into account the reduction in torque due to the reduced cooling at low frequencies). If the voltage remains constant and only the frequency increases, this is referred to as field weakening mode and the motor torque is reduced at 1/f.

The numerous influential components at inverter operation makes it clear that careful planning is not only necessary for perfect opera-tion, but also for the best possible solution from the point of view of cost.

The tables of pages 4/4 and 4/4 show the permitted torque values for the typical speed ranges for 2, 4, 6 and 8-pole motors.

Our technical department is available to answer any questions.

Motor protection

The motor protection must be provided in line with EN 60079-14. The motors must be protected with a motor protection switch or equivalent equipment on all poles to prevent inadmissible heating due to overload. A PTC-resistor for winding temperature monitoring in conjunction with a triggering device is regarded as equivalent protective equipment. Motors up to 200 kW can be fitted with such as the only form of protection. Using temperature monitoring as the only form of protection is stipulated for all operating modes which deviate from S1 operation, such as operation with frequency converter, switching operation, short-tem operation, heavy starting etc. Protection is also provided in case of reduced cooling air flow and/or too high ambient temperature. The pressure-tight HEW motors are fitted with PTC-resistor as standard. The motors can be equipped with other optional temperature sensors, e.g. early warning.

Cooling (ventilation)

All motors are fitted with a robust and temperature-resistant plastic or aluminium fan.

External ventilation (IC 416):

External fans are used, for instance, to increase the nominal output, for high switching frequencies and, if necessary, when operating with a frequency converter. All external fans are supplied with a three-phase connection.

Stationary motor heating

Anti-condensation heaterThe motors are fitted with an anti-condensation heater to prevent heavy condensation on the stator winding in case of major temperature fluctuations and load changes, e.g. when periodically at a standstill.

Anti-freezing heaterA stationary motor heater is a stipulated requirement for ambient temperatures < -20°C.

The stationary motor heater must not be switched on whilst the motor is in operation.
