Tauranga Primary School Newsletter 11 May 2012 Newsletter TERM 2 / WEEK 3 F r o m t h e P r i n c i p a l ‘s P e n Dear Parents / Caregivers, This last week has given us our first taste of winter and already we have seen a rise in the number of children with tummy bugs and needing to be sent home. It is timely therefore to ensure that our family contact details are all up to date. If you have changed your address, phone number (including cellphone and work number) please let the office know as soon as possible. You can do this by e-mail <[email protected] > or by completing and returning the slip included in this newsletter. It is also timely to remind children what they can do to keep themselves healthy, especially to avoid catching and spreading coughs and colds - the Health Department recommend the following: Always wash hands after coughing and sneezing or disposing of tissues. Hand washing – a lick and a promise will not be effective. A thorough hand wash should continue while you sing Happy Birthday (at least 20 secs) Then a thorough dry until all moisture is dried. Cover mouth and nose while coughing and sneezing. Use a tissue and dispose of it (hygienically) once used Keep your hands away from your mouth, nose and eyes. Avoid contact with people who have influenza-like symptoms. We also emphasise the importance of keeping your child/ren at home when they have tummy bugs, cold or flu symptoms. The infectious period for any influenza type illness is at the early stages and often, before we send home an unwell child, the infection has spread further through the school. From time to time, for a variety of reasons, we have some student places available for out of zone children throughout the school. This year we have had several families moving away from the Bay and as a result we currently have room for one or two students at most class levels. We do know that many out of zone parents believe that they cannot enrol their children here, but if you know of any families wishing to have their children attend Tauranga Primary School this would be an opportune time to apply. Keeping our roll stable is crucial to keep our funding at a viable level and also to retain the staff we currently have. Application forms can be downloaded from the school’s website <www.tauranga.school.nz > If numbers of applications exceed the places available a ballot will be held. To be considered in the ballot, completed application forms will need to be into the office by Wednesday May 23 with the ballot (if required) held on Friday May 25. DATES TO REMEMBER

Did you know that TPS has a walking school bus?It operates every day from school. After school children meet with parent “bus drivers” outside Room 15. They then walk down to Memorial Park (by the Rowing Club) where there is plenty of parking. The bus usually arrives by 3.20pm. There are lots of rewards and incentives for children to take part and if we can reduce the congestion outside the school gate, it will be so much safer for our children.

On Monday 7th May we went to Rotorua to the National Young Leaders Conference. We had five awesome people talk to us about igniting your spark in your self. Dave Atkins was one of the speakers. He made a banana into a penguin and threw it into the audience of 2000 people. He had four pointers for us 1.Stick up for what is right. 2.Choose good friends. 3.Believe in yourself. 4.Live for others. We also listened to Ruth Aitkins the NZ netball coach. She told us to give 100% in every thing we do, be a role model for others, and that you don’t have to be a hero to be a good friend, follow your dreams forever. She said you will have ups and downs in your life but don’t give up. Thats what the netball team did and they won the 2006 Beijing common wealth games for netball. The speakers were all very funny, entertaining and had confidence in themselves. They were very inspirational speakers and at the end we had a GLOW PARTY! The Young Leaders would like to say another thank you to TPS parents and students for supporting us on Mufti day so that we could raise the money for this awesome event.

My first few weeks at TPS have been most enjoyable and I am really excited about getting involved in all our wonderful sports. I am currently situated in the school library, but will soon have a permanent location and hours. I would love to meet anyone for sport questions, advice or just pop in to say hello. This term TPS is strongly represented on the sports fields. All our winter sports teams are now under way. We have 10 teams representing our school during Term 2 and 3 in Netball, Hockey and Basketball. A competitive team of gymnasts has been selected to compete at the Schools Gymsport Festival at Argos Gym. These girls are currently working hard to learn and perfect their routines. We also have a Rippa Rugby Squad training every lunch hour. These talented rugby players will participate next week in the Rippa Rugby Mini World Cup at Blake Park. We wish all our athletes heaps of luck and remember to play hard, play fair and have fun!!

The Board wishes to thank several people and groups for their support of Tauranga Primary and in particular our Blended Learning Classroom (ICT) project Your children will soon, if not already, be enjoying the additional learning tools that have been provided to them. The Board and School commenced planning this project sometime ago. We wish to acknowledge TECT, FRIENDS OF THE SCHOOL and PARENT donations in assisting the Board to achieve our projected ICT project. Activity fee.The establishment of this fee by the Board was only done after approx 1 years consultation and debate. To this end we as a Board are delighted with the acceptance of this fee. To date 75% of the school (82% Senior/Middle and 67% Junior) have paid this fee. For the first year this far exceeded the Boards projected figures. We look forward to your continued support of this fee. Remember this is NOT an additional fee, it is a collective amount of those small fees required for approved school activities throughout the year. Board By-electionNominations will be called for commencing 12th May and closing 25th May. This is an ideal opportunity for 2 people to join the Board prior to the general election early next year. Please give serious thought to nominations , we look forward to welcoming new members on the Board. In our governance role of Tauranga Primary School we meet eight times a year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Management and all Staff for their continued work in striving to achieve required results. FarewellOur thanks go to Russell Syme for his time on the Board, Russell provided the Board with prudent financial observations and the ability to have a clear “down to earth” approach of questions and problems that arose. We wish Russell, Tracey, Zara and Campbell all the best for the future. Neil HitchinerChairman

Me and George went on a mission in a car. It was my first time driving. We went fast! I smelt burning because he went over the speed limit! We went in a sewer. It took us down but we found a ladder to get out. We found crystals too.

One day me and Bella we went to our underground lab. We typed in Kassie.com and Bella.com and then we heard the baddies feet come by. We jumped and hit our head really hard. Then we saw the baddie steal the queen’s baby. The baby cried so much but we saved it and returned it back to it’s Mum and it stopped crying.

Me and Matheson went on an underwater adventure. It was spooky scary. We went underwater. A shark saw us. We had an invisible button. We pressed it and turned invisible. We passed the shark. We came out on the water bridge. We didn’t know crocodiles were in the river. I got boxing gloves. A baddie hit me.“Ow!” I said and punched him back.
