Admissions Requirements
• Requirements vary so review each college, including whether they require SAT Subject exams, letters of rec. and transcripts.
• Many use Committee Selection - entire student application is reviewed so extracurricular activities, portfolios, auditions and recommendations play a more significant role.
• Many campuses use the Common Application
• One application used by hundreds of colleges and universities
• Accepted in place of the school’s own application and students can apply to many colleges using this one application
• Colleges that use the Common Application also require:
• An essay (some schools require additional supplementalessays)
• Letters of recommendation from your counselor and academic teacher(s)
List of Common App Schools that accept the Common Application in place of their own application
D or F Grades
• If an F grade is earned in any course required for high school graduation, the course must be repeated.
• Students who plan to go directly to a 4-year college are strongly advised to repeat any D grade to be eligible and to improve GPA.
For CSU/UC AdmissionStudents who earn a D or F grade in an A-G course that is required for admission will need to repeat the course to remain eligible for CSU/UC (exceptions include math and world language IF the D was earned FIRST semester and a C of higher was earned the SECOND semester).
During 12th grade, students that receive a D or F grade in any course, including AP and non A-G courses, may be at risk of having their admission rescinded.
Seniors should earn C grades or better!
1. Decide if you need to take either by researching your intended colleges.
MOST 4-year colleges require EITHER the SAT OR the ACT (and there
are differences between them). Some colleges ALSO require various
Subject Tests. Make sure you know if your colleges require the essay
section for the SAT/ACT.
2. Take a practice test and find out which test suits you better, then
PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE.
3. Take the test or tests you choose WHEN YOU ARE MOST PREPARED.
Typically, this means the end of junior year!*
4. FAQs
5. Registering: ACT SAT Subject Tests
*NPHS recommends that students test at least once (SAT or ACT) in 11th grade. Students will receive
their scores, and will have at least one opportunity to retest in 12th grade if desired.
College Entrance Exams
• Sign in with your user name information
• Be sure your username and password information are accurate! We send important messages to you via Naviance.
• Search for careers by job title, keyword, and category
• Link directly from career descriptions to colleges offering related majors
• Complete the Career Interest Profiler

Consider multiple criteria- cost, admission rates, requirements, location, majors available, size, & student life- to identify possible good fit colleges.
Your college list should include a broad range of schools, mostly
“Safety” Schools – preparation well exceeds admission requirements & costs
“Match” Schools – preparation meets or exceeds admission requirements & costs
And a few…
“Reach” Schools - admission is very competitive regardless of student preparation (historically low admission rates); student does not meet or exceed requirements or the school’s cost exceeds your college budget
Use Naviance and the college websites* to research admission criteria and acceptance rates to compare your qualifications with those of students who have been admitted in the past.
*Your best source is always the college
NCAA Prospective Student Athletes
