In an advertisement  the New York Times sent  last week by email, the paper promised "unparalleled cultural coverage."  In  two recent articles, however, the paper failed to live up to this promise. An article in the Times' travel section this past Saturday lauded Reem's Bakery in Oakland, which has been the subject of protests over its mural glorifying Rasmeah Odeh. Odeh was convicted of the terrorist killing of two Hebrew University students in a trial deemed fair by observers from the  International Red Cross. Yet, completely omitting the terror conviction, the Times describes Odeh as a "controversial Palestinian activist" and Reem's bakery as "full of California love." ("An Arab Bakery in Oakland Full of California Love," November 11.) In addition, the Times' article last week about the opening of the new Louvre Abu Dhabi museum as a "soft power" means "to promote the capital as a tolerant global city" completely covers up a recent egregious instance of Emirati intolerance: an official ban on all Israeli symbols, including the Jewish state's anthem, at the international Grand Slam judo tournament in Abu Dhabi last month. ("Louvre Abu Dhabi, a Cultural Cornerstone Where East Meets West," November 7.) The  Times  portrayed anti-Israel discrimination  as  the  private  slight  of  just  one  individual  athlete,  and  ignored the  official wholesale Emirati ban on all Israeli symbols at the competition. The article downplays anti-Israel Arab hostility in international sporting events. You have more of an impact when you share your thoughts in your own words. Please use the information included here as background for your letter instead of copying from this column. Please write to the New York Times:

• Send a letter to the editor at [email protected]

• Copy arts editors at [email protected] • Copy travel editors at [email protected] • Copy the newsroom at [email protected]

Firmly but courteously make the following points:

• Rasmeah Odeh is not a "controversial activist." She is a convicted terrorist. Her trial was deemed fair by International Red Cross observers. That is why Reem's mural has been the subject of protests.

• Ask the travel editors to append an Editor's Note explaining that it is Odeh's criminal record, not "activism," that has made Reem's the subject of controversy.

• The Times has whitewashed the UAE Judo Federation's egregious and unprovoked hostility to Israeli athletes to facilitate the portrayal of Abu Dhabi as a tolerant city. Is this what the Times considers "unparalleled cultural coverage?"

• Ask the arts editors to append an Editor's Note explaining that the article originally omitted the most egregious instance of Emirati  intolerance at  the  Judo  tournament:  the  official  ban  on  any  Israeli  symbols  including  the  singing  of  the  Israeli national anthem.
