The O’s set the tone early with an 11-0 run and Durant answered with their own 11-0 run. Springville held a 27-25 lead at the half and did what it took to hold on for a 56-52 win to give Durant its second loss of the early season. “This caps a great week for us as we broke into the rankings at #15 (1A) and earned two hard-fought victories over high quality opponents (Maquoketa Valley and Durant). Aſter going 1-7 in games that were decided by 5 points or less last season it is encouraging that we were able to closeout two close games this week. We sll have a lot of growth ahead of us, parcularly on the defensive glass and at the foul line, but we are happy with where our young team is at so early in the season”, said Coach Sanderson. I think he sounds happy don’t you? Megan Wagaman (pictured right) led her team with 15 points, 11 boards and 5 assists. Freshmen Rylee Menster (below right) and Mikayla Nachazel (pictured leſt) added 12 to the mix in a game that allowed every Lady “O” to make the scoring column. Sanderson’s Christmas spirit connues as on Tuesday the girls hosted Central City and took lile me in pung the game out of reach leaping to an impressive 33-0 lead that evolved in to a 68-14 win over their conference foe. “Offensively, we were very balanced again tonight. Four players scored in double-digits” he said. Balance? You could say that—Senior Rachel Gloeckner led her team on Tuesday with 13 points (3 of 4 from behind the arc), Menster tossed in 12, Nachazel 11 and Megan Wagaman 10. Menster also had 3 steals in the game, she’s averaging 4 so far. Coach Sanderson said that “we were able to jump on them early” as the Oriole’s had a press that forced either a turnover or a poor shot and from there it was the transion game that propelled them to their quick and convincing lead. Next up for the girls will be a tough test, they travel to Alburne on Friday for what is always a compeve road game. The Lady Pirates as Coach Sanderson tells us are “4-1 with victories over two ranked opponents in 1A. Last season we lost two one-possession games against them so we are looking forward to geng another shot at them”. Added incenve is the limelight—9.2 will be broadcasng from the gym so comb your hair and brush your teeth. But come prepared to cheer the girls on, this has the makings of a showdown.

LADY ORIOLE BASKETBALL— ON A ROLL

Coach Sanderson must have made Santa’s “nice” list this year. He is no doubt getting all he asked for; he’s got a new baby, a new assistant coach and a #13 basketball team that currently sits at 5-0 overall, 3-0 in conference play. After a last minute free Friday when Prince of Peace had to bow out because of the flu, the girls used the night to prepare for a tough Durant team on Saturday. The Wildcats could run the floor and they pushed the O’s a bit, perhaps a little more than Maquoketa Valley, and the girls responded. After going 1-7 in games that were decided by 5 points or less last season it is encouraging that we were able to closeout two close games this week. We still have a lot of growth ahead of us, particularly on the defensive glass and at the foul line, but we are happy with where our young team is at so early in the season”, said Coach Sanderson. I think he sounds happy don’t you? Megan Wagaman (pictured right) led her team with 15 points, 11 boards and 5 assists. Freshmen Rylee Menster (below right)

and Mikayla Nachazel (pictured left) added 12 to the mix in a game that allowed every Lady “O” to make the scoring column. Sanderson’s Christmas spirit continues as on Tuesday the girls hosted Central City and took little time in putting the game out of reach leaping to an impressive 33-0 lead that evolved in to a 68-14 win over their conference foe. “Offensively, we were very balanced again tonight. ORIOLE BOYS DROP FIRST LOSS BUT BOUNCES BACK QUICKLY

On Saturday evening the Oriole boys basketball team fell victim to the adage “a tale of two halves”. Springville played pretty even with Durant in the first half trailing just 31 to 25 at the break. In the third and fourth quarters however, the shooting grew cold and the Wildcats were just warming up. They went on to beat the O’s, 59-35 and give them their first loss of the season. Sophomore Cavanaugh Riley led in scoring with 15 points while Senior Greg Pauly added 13. With just a day of practice to regroup the Orioles came out determined on Tuesday when Central City visited Machovec. Springville opened up with a lead and never looked back as they cruised to a 56-35 win against the 2-3 Wildcats and sent them home with another loss. Senior Cody Blake had a strong first half overpowering the visitors for 6 quick points down low. Pauly lit their defense up from both outside and in the paint, he’d finish with 21 points as well as 12 boards for his first double-double this season. Riley added 11 in the win that allowed Coach Merritt to spread around the playing time. Friday will be another Tri-Rivers battle at Alburnett. The Pirates are a surprising 1-3 but they can shoot the lights out and on their home court? They are always a hand full. Remember, it’s a televised ball game so get there early and make sure to comb the back of your hair—cameras are usually behind the Oriole’s side of the bleachers. Go O’s! (Clockwise from the right are; Cody Blake, Tyler McDowell and Greg Pauly all finding their way to the scoring column on Tuesday night in Machovec)

ARCHERS RETURN FOR ANOTHER SEASON

They are back and with even more numbers, the Archery team is expanding. Coach Gary Biles tells us that 45 archers reported for practice on December 2nd. “Expanded numbers of archers this year will allow both a middle school and a high school to field a team at all of the area tournaments. A team is made up of twelve to twenty four archers, with the twelve high scores counting towards the team score. Of these twelve high scores, four scores must be either girls’ scores or boys’ scores” Biles says. Tournaments are held in Mount Vernon, Alburnett, Bellevue and for the first time, right here in Springville! They’ll kick their season off in Anamosa on January 3rd. With state competition the ultimate prize, Springville will be competing throughout January and February with the hope of qualifying for the trip to Des Moines in March. February 27 is the date of the first annual Springville tournament. Biles tells us that “500 archers are expected to be in attendance at the all day tournament at Springville. Proceeds from the tournament will help fund the program for the following year”. Mr. Biles also shared that “with twelve sponsoring business and organizations and a grant from the Springville Schools Foundation, the program was able to purchase six additional targets, another backstop net, five additional bows and ten dozen arrows. This additional equipment allows the program to double the number of archers shooting at one time”. Tammy Mysak and Bill Nelson return as well to serve as assistant coaches this winter. Another great example of the amazing things our students and community members are up to! (This photo is from last season’s state tournament, courtesy of Jaime Zaruba)

A FACE IN THE CROWD… This week we caught up with 5th grader Morgan Nachazel at the Lady Oriole basketball game on Tuesday. She was kind enough to take a break from cheering for big sister Mikayla and tell us the following: What is your favorite concession stand food? Pizza What is the last movie you saw in a theatre? Dolphin Tale 2 Do you have any pets? A bunny—Dominoe, a cat—Daisy and a dog—Cash What’s your favorite subject in school? Reading and Writing—shout out to Mr. Roudabush! What is at the top of your Christmas list this year? Cool basketball shoes—like customized KD’s (see photo above—Greg Pauly’s Customized KD’s)

I like your thinking Morgan—thank you. You just never know...at the next Oriole Event, You could be more than a Face

DID YOU KNOW?

The Lady Oriole basketball squad has grasped the full meaning of a team concept as assists are at an all time high and the point distribution is spread out evenly. Coach Sanderson is always good for some facts and this week he shares that so far in the five games the girls have played and won, they’ve had a different leading scorer. Game one against Cedar Valley, Sarah Matus led them with 14 points. Game two at East Buchanan the leader was Mikayla Nachazel with 18 and then in game three when hosting Maquoketa Valley Rylee Menster was tops with 15. On Saturday when Durant came to town Megan Wagaman led her mates with 15 and Tuesday in the Central City trouncing, Rachel Gloeckner finished with 13. As a team they average 55 a game and hold opponents to 34, beating them on average by 20 a game. They set a new team assist record when they tallied 26 against Cedar Valley and something tells me they’ll be outdoing themselves yet this season. They shoot 51% from the field and create on average 14 turnovers off steals each game. It’s no surprise that Menster leads with an average of 4 a game but Wagaman and Matus add a couple each night as well and not only do they force the turnover—they score off of it. With so much ahead of them all we can do is wait and see how the numbers keep rolling in. One thing’s for sure—it is a great day to be an Oriole!

FRIDAY’S GAME IS COACHES VS CANCER NIGHT All across the country on Friday, High School basketball games will be honoring the annual Coaches VS Cancer battle and this weeks game against Alburnett is being called a “White Out” night. So break out all the white you can find and if you are short on the color—go get some Clorox. Friday’s games will also be broadcast on KCRG Channel 9.2. The games are in Alburnett and we remind you that they usually have the camera on the Springville side which cuts in to our fan space—so get there early and be sure to spend time on the hair style—your back side will get some coverage!

The Lady Pirates are 5-1 your Lady O’s are 5-0

The Pirate boys team is 1-3 while your Oriole’s are 4-1

There’s no better way to beat Alburnett but on their floor AND on Television!

LET’S GO O’S!
