(BPT) - Deer are beautiful, graceful animals, we cannot deny it. But when it comes to where deer decide to dine, most of us just don’t want them outside our windows foraging through our foliage. Their beauty and grace comes with the destruction - even devastation - of our well-cared-for and often expensive landscaped yards and gardens. If you think your yard is out of the woods since summer’s over, think again. Deer damage can actually get worse in fall and winter.We know deer can do extensive damage to landscapes in any season, but during winter, when their food sources are scarce, they can be more aggressive and bold, wreaking havoc on trees and shrubs they never touched in warmer weather. A single deer eats about 12 pounds of foliage a day, and in winter they’ll turn to any source of vegetation to satisfy their appetites.
Bucks can travel 100 miles or more, but does don’t migrate.They usu-ally stay within the same three to four square miles for their entire lives. That means once a doe finds an easy food source in your yard, she’ll be back again and again, season to season, and you can bet she’ll bring her friends and babies with her.
During winter months, a deer’s diet changes. Instead of the grass and leaves they favor during summer, deer turn to woody plants in winter. That means your evergreens are at risk. Although a deer’s mouth is usually about 28 inches above the ground, when one stands on its back legs, it can reach as high as 6 feet off the ground. That reach allows them to create a broad swath of damage to even tall trees.
Even before the weather turns really cold, deer can cause damage to trees. Fall is mating season. Bucks become aggressive and the new antlers they’ve grown over the summer itch. They scratch by rubbing
their antlers on tree trunks - even those they don’t like to eat - and can cause serious damage to trees.
The best approach to preventing deer damage is a proactive one. Don’t wait until you see deer or deer damage in your yard to deal with the problem. So what do you do to keep the deer out? There are loads of ‘home remedies’ that have been tried with varying results: human hair, soap, pepper spray, even coyote urine. These remedies might work sporadically, but they are not reliable deterrents for deer.
Then there’s fencing. Properly built and maintained fencing can be an effective method for preventing deer damage. But, deer can jump up to and clear an 8-foot fence on level ground, and they can easily push and remove plastic netting. Installing a 6- to 8-foot fence can be an effective solution to some extent, but fencing is costly and can be quite unsightly.
One of the most effective and easiest methods to deter deer is repel-lents. Repellents rely on deer’s strong sense of smell. Many are avail-able in the marketplace, but few have credible third-party testing for efficacy, and some rely on chemicals that are unfriendly to the environ-ment, and can be injurious to certain trees, shrubs, and especially to new growth.

A long to-do list for getting your home ready can feel over-whelming, leaving you wondering where you’ll find the time and resources. But, with some optimism, easy tips and access to a few rental tools, you can winterize your home in just one weekend, leaving plenty of time to enjoy autumn’s splendor.
Prepare your lawnand landscaping
Cold temperatures cause grass and other plants in your land-scape to go dormant. Spend a few hours preparing your lawn for beautiful greenery next year.
Start by aerating. Renting an aerator is a cost-effective and efficient way to reduce thatch and provide extra space in the soil for water and oxygen to reach the roots. Find a local American Rental Association (BPT) member store near you by visiting RentalHQ.com. After aerating, spread a quality winter fertilizer to give your grass the nutrients it needs to grow strong. If you live in an area with harsh winters, remember to cover roses and delicate perennials so that they are protected.
Winterize your deckThe harsh winter elements can take a major toll on decking,
so it’s important to protect it. With a little time and effort, your deck will make it through winter unscathed and ready for out-door fun in spring.
To keep the structure’s integrity intact and wood looking beautiful, clean and seal your deck before winter arrives. Start by renting a pressure washer at your local ARA member rental store. The trained rental associate will give you guidance on
safe and efficient operation of the pressure washer. After you clean your deck, let it dry completely and then apply paint or sealant.
Trim your treesWeak trees and dead branches can break and fall during
winter, possibly damaging your home, your car, a utility line, or worse. Be a responsible homeowner and cut weak or dead branches in the fall so you don’t have to worry.
A chainsaw is the easiest way to deal with dead branches and will take much less time than hand sawing. You can rent a chain-saw to cut the wood into small logs or pieces for disposing of properly. Chippers can also be rented for grinding up the wood and using it for mulch in the spring.
Seal windows and doorsWhen temperatures drop, the small leaks in windows and
doors become apparent. Avoid a chilly house and high energy bills by caulking your windows and weather stripping doors.
Weather stripping is cheap and easy.Apply the adhesive strip between the door and frame for a
tight seal that limits the amount of air that enters or exits when the door is closed.
Caulking windows is a simple process as well when you have a caulk gun. If you need a tall ladder to reach second story win-dows, consider renting it since you’ll likely use it infrequently. While you have the ladder, clean your gutters of leaves and other debris that can cause backups and ice dams.
All you need is one weekend to prepare your home and yard for the cold weather ahead. Plus you’ll get to enjoy the crisp autumn air while you get these quick and easy chores done.

It’s that time of year again, when we pull out the blankets and sweaters and stash the last of the warm-weather items until spring arrives.
Many homes lack the space needed to store everything right where we use it. So seasonal things get shuttled around and sometimes even misplaced.
If the serving dishes you use only at the holidays are stacked way up at the top of your pantry, “you may find your-self running out and buying something you’ve already got, because you can’t remember what you have or you can’t get to it,” says Atlanta-based interior designer Mallory Mathison.
Many of her clients struggle with insufficient closet space for storing items that are only used for a few months each year.
Here, Mathison and interior design-ers Brian Patrick Flynn and Molly Luetkemeyer offer advice on creatively storing off-season items in ways that maximize every inch of space and make it easy to retrieve what you need.
FIND DOUBLE-DUTYFURNITURE
All three designers love furniture that offers hidden storage. A bench with storage space inside is perfect for boots, and bins containing scarves, gloves and hats.
Or add a large coffee table/otto-man combination to your living room: “They’re an easy way to sneak a bit more seasonal storage into a room, without having to add extra closet space or add pricey, big-ticket furniture pieces,” says Flynn, founder of the design website decordemon.com. “You can find a ton of storage-ottoman-coffee tables on web-sites like overstock.com or hayneedle.com.”
For families with pets, Flynn suggests creating a sleeping space for a small dog or cat that doubles as seasonal storage. “To do this, I take a flea-market dresser, usually a highboy with four to six draw-ers, then remove the bottom two for use as an open lounge space for pets, complete with a removable cushion,” he says. Use the remaining drawers above for seasonal items like off-season clothing.
MAXIMIZE UNDER-BED SPACESMany people use the space under
their master bed for seasonal storage. Luetkemeyer suggests doing the same with every bed in the house.
Tuck clear plastic bins under chil-dren’s beds (and a guest bed, if you have one), labeling each one clearly.
You can rotate items in and out of these bins during the year — one holding
swim-suits all winter might hold sweaters in summer. If you know that all under-bed space is designated for seasonal items, it will be easier to track down the once-a-year items you’re seeking.

TRY CREATIVE CARPENTRYMathison suggests having built-in cabi-
nets added along the walls on both sides of your bed. Creating this architectural niche for your bed “is totally cozy, and it also cre-ates great concealed and/or open storage,” she says.
Another built-in option: If your kitchen cabinets don’t go all the way to the ceiling, add extra closed storage on top for seasonal serving dishes and table linens. Or have a row of very shallow shelves (no more than 3 or 4 inches deep) added to one wall of your kitchen or pantry. You can prop up dishware or serving pieces you rarely use, creatively storing them while adding some beauty to your walls.
Also, search your home for bits of square-footage that aren’t being used, such as a crawl space under a staircase. Hire a handy-man to add a small door and turn that empty space into a cabinet.
Consider changing your kitchen seating: Swap out chairs for built-in benches with hidden storage, then hide rarely-used items there.
GET HOOKED“Seasonal things that inspire you should
be left out as much as possible,” Flynn says. “I use a ton of wall hooks in my spaces, mostly to be able to hang up favorite pieces of clothing which add decorative flair to a room.”
In a bedroom, a cluster of favorite flannel shirts can look great on decorative hooks, and the same goes for winter jackets. In summer, hang your favorite T-shirts or swimsuits on those same hooks while the winter items are put away.
This works well in kids’ rooms and nurs-eries, helping ensure that kids wear their cutest pieces before the season ends and they grow out of them.
USE CLOSETS WELLMaximize closet space by adding shelves
up high if there aren’t any, then keep a small step-ladder in the closet for accessing high items, Luetkemeyer says. Add inexpensive, battery-powered lights to dim closets, and increase shelf space by adding a row of can-vas hanging shelves.
In a guest room closet, if you have one, Mathison suggests using two rows of hang-ing canvas shelves — one filled with items your guest may need, such as extra towels and soap, and the other left empty so your guest can put out some of the clothes they brought. Then use the rest of the closet for your seasonal things. It will be clear to the guest what space is theirs and what isn’t.
If winter items will be hung in a closet, Flynn opts for “thick wooden hangers or sculptural modern aluminum hangers to
keep the structural integrity of coats or heavy pants.” For lighter summer items, Luetkemeyer recommends slim, foam-cov-ered hangers that take up less space and won’t let items like camisoles slip off.
Consider splurging on rebuilding your closets with exactly the shelving and hang-ing space you want: “This way, every closet in the house can work for all seasons,” says Flynn. “We spend a ton of money on our cars and have garages built for them, right? Well, we spend just as much on our ward-robes, so why not invest in a space to store that investment?”
ROLL OUT THE RACKSMathison suggests keeping seasonal
things like coats in clear plastic garment bags on rolling racks in a basement or attic. They’ll stay clean, and when it’s time to swap them with the opposite season’s items in your main closets, having items grouped
in garment bags will make it simpler to transport them quickly back and forth.
Rolling garment racks are easy to find and affordable, but it’s important to choose good quality ones so they don’t bend under the weight of winter clothing.
Mathison is also a fan of coordinated bins or baskets to organize smaller items (gloves, hats, swimsuits, goggles) in closets. It’s easy to move these bins out of your main closet into a basement or attic during the off-sea-son.
PARE DOWNLuetkemeyer points out that the change
of season is a great time to identify items you don’t use and get rid of them. Consider donating sheets or blankets you rarely use to a charity or shelter. Do the same with bulky winter coats and sweaters. You’ll save space for seasonal items, and also embrace the meaning of the holiday season.
