TrafoStar is built on the core type technology. It has a circular shapedcore limb surrounded by concentricallyarranged, cylinder-shaped windings.This transformer concept gives themost efficient use of the active material,while allowing short, competitiveassembly times in the factory.

Our core type technology with cylindrical windings has an excellentcapability to withstand short-circuitseven under the most demanding faultconditions.

The high voltage windings are normallybuilt as ordinary, interleaved or shieldeddisc windings, while the low voltagewindings typically are of helical or layerdesign. The tapped portion of thewinding is normally arranged as a separate physical winding shell. Core designThe core design is a direct result ofeach customer’s evaluation of factorssuch as losses, noise and weight. Fordemanding applications, only topquality steel is used. All designs utilizemitred 45-degree – conventional orstep-lap – joints. Rigid clamping usingAscecond, a semi-conducting tape,keeps the core sheets of our large unitstogether and gives the core a smoother,more efficient electrode shape.

During drying,the windings are subjected to cycles ofpressure to make the insulation mater-ial settle and to establish the finalwinding height. Hot oil is vacuumfilled from the bottom of the tank,

Dry power transformersABB’s new, dry power transformertechnology replaces conventional con-ductors with cable materials, whichcompletely eliminates the need for oiland cellulose insulation. This newtransformer concept is particularlyfavorable in urban and environmental-ly sensitive areas, since oil is complete-ly eliminated and a much higher safetylevel is achieved. Maintenance costsare also considerably lower than forconventional transformers.

Electronic tap changersABB Power Transformers has developeda unique electronic tap changer thatregulates dips in system voltage withinone cycle. There are no moving partsin the current path but the equipmentis built up using well-known thyristortechnology. This solution is service-proven in other ABB equipment.
