1907New Plaza Hotel opens,
constructed at a cost of $12.5 million
(or approximately $300 million in 2014 dollars).
1920Construction of a 300-room
annex on the 58th Street side of the hotel.
1943Conrad Hilton and Atlas
Corporation acquire the hotel for $7.4 million (or
approximately $101.6 million in 2014 dollars).
1950Architect Frank Lloyd Wright
moves into Suite 223-225, where he will live for the next
six years.
1978The hotel is added to the
National Register of Historic Places by the U.S. Department
of the Interior.
1988Donald Trump acquires the
property for $390 million (or $783.9 million in 2014 dollars).
2005The Plaza closes for an extensive lobby-to-roof
restoration by Elad Properties.
2008Following the $450-million refurbishment, the Plaza
reopens its doors.
2012Sahara acquires the Plaza for approximately $570 million.

Construction begins on the first Plaza Hotel, the former site of
the New York Skating Club. Builders, however, failed to
raise necessary funds and New York Life Insurance Company foreclosed on the property,
hiring architects McKim, Mead and White to complete the
hotel and redesign the interior.
First Plaza Hotel opens. First Plaza razed to make way for a bigger hotel.
