BASIC CONCEPTS

OF CPRD. D. Millett, RN, BS

Page 2: 12 nurses basic concepts of cpr

ADULT CPR FOR UNRESPONSIVE PERSON

Check the victim FIRST to see if they are unresponsive.

If the person does not respond to you or they are not breathing or scarcely breathing, call 911 STAT!

Then return to the victim. If there is NO pulse and they victim is NOT BREATHING...START CPR!

Chest Compressions: ADULT CPR

These are done with 30 chest compressions (on sternum or breast bone) per every two breaths or a 30:2 ratio and performed with both hands. For an adult, the depth of the depressions is 1 ½ - 2 inches deep.

Sing or Hum the song: “STAYIN’ ALIVE” when performing CPR

The ACTUAL CHEST COMPRESSIONS can be done to the beat of the song “STAYIN’ ALIVE,” by the

Bee Gees – for real…so KNOW that song!!

WARNING: ADULT CPR

FOR AN UNTRAINED LAYPERSON, IT IS MORE LIFE SAVING TO:

ONLY DUE THE CHEST COMPRESSIONS…NO BREATHING!

Page 6: 12 nurses basic concepts of cpr

ADULTS ONLY…CALL 911 FIRST!

FIRST TREAT THE CHILD AND INFANT

FOR A CHILD AND AN INFANT, DO A REPTITION OF 5 SETS OF 30 COMPRESSIONS AND 2 BREATHS.

THEN CALL 911.

DEPTH OF COMPRESSIONS: CHILD

(ages 1 – 8)

For the child (1 – 8 years old), the depth of the compressions are 1 – 1 ½ inches and USE ONLY THE PALM OF ONE HAND.

30:2 chest compressions or 30 compression, with the use of only one hand, to every 2 breaths.

CHILD CPR (ages 1 – 8) If you come upon on an

unresponsive child (1 – 8), FIRST do a set of 5 compression of 30 chest compressions and 2 breaths, for 30:2 ratio.

AFTER the set of 5 compressions with breaths, CALL 911.

DEPTH OF COMPRESSIONS: INFANT

FOR AN INFANT, CHEST COMPRESSSIONS ARE DONE WITH YOUR INDEX AND MIDDLE FINGER ONLY, RIGHT BETWEEN THE TWO NIPPLES AND ARE 1/3 INCH IN COMPRESSIONS.

INFANT CPR: BREATHING

THE BEST METHOD IS TO CRADLE THE

BABY IN ONE OF YOUR ARMS IN ORDER TO PREFORM CPR. THIS POSITION MAKES IT EASIER TO BREATH OVER THEIR NOSE AND MOUTH, AS WELL AS DO THE CHEST COMPRESSIONS.

The same ratio applies to the infant: 30 compressions to 2 breaths.

BREATHING: ADULTS AND CHILDREN (1 – 8) With one hand, tilt the head back, and with the other hand, lift the chin. Pinch the victim's nose and cover their mouth with yours and blow until you see their chest rise. Give 2 breaths, each lasting about 1 second. Be sure to watch their chest rise and fall to know you are breathing effectively.

INFANTGently tilt the infant’s head back and cover their nose AND mouth with yours; make certain you only blow “puffs” of breath into them, and watch for their chest to rise and fall.

Continue until help arrives…

Keep preforming CPR and breathing for the victim at a 30:2 ratio ~ no matter the age, the ratio will ALWAYS be:

30:2
