1 Queensland Friends of the Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens Newsletter No 70 December 2016 Bursary Winner’s Rewarding Year Firstly, I would like to express my appreciation and gratitude to you all for awarding me this bursary last year. I spent the money on various books relating to ancient Greek, and each one assisted me, in some way or another. This bursary has without a doubt been an immense help for my studies in Ancient Greek while I was undertaking my honours in Classical Languages this year, which I just completed. In my thesis, I discussed the use of maritime materials in magical texts from the Greek Magical Papyri. I thoroughly enjoyed researching this topic, and throughout the year I learnt so much. I translated and analysed sixteen texts from the Greek Magical Papyri, all of which had their own unique and interesting qualities, whether it be the language used, the materials required, or the formula itself. Through the study of these texts, I also had the opportunity to investigate a whole new section of history that I had not previously studied, in regards to both time and place. The texts that I looked at were from Roman Egypt, dated to the 2 nd –5 th century AD and dealt with Greek, Egyptian, Jewish, and Near Eastern cultures. This was indeed such an interesting time period to look at and I have learned so much about this tiny but fascinating area of history. The first book I bought was Hans Dieter Betz’s edition of The Greek Magical Papyri and this was the book that started off my honours year! I read through the whole book a couple of times while selecting the sections that I needed and without a doubt it is a fascinating collection of texts. It is made all the more interesting as so many of the spells and charms in it relate to the same concerns that people have today. There are many love charms, spells for victory or safety and also curses to perform upon one’s enemies. Although these spells and curses are not practised or used today (I especially hope this is true in regards to the curses), they

Theseareitsopeningsentences;

BUT UP THERE you go around every hour and a half, time after time after time. You wake up usually in the mornings, over the Middle East and over North Africa. As you eat breakfast you look out the window and there’s the Mediterranean area, Greece and Rome and North Africa and the Sinai, that whole area. And you realize that in one glance what you’re seeing is what was the whole history of humankind for years – the cradle of civilization.
