Membership
The Heritage Center is an important part of the Jewish Community Center. To ensure we can provide the best services to our participants, a nominal membership fee has been established. Individuals who currently have a senior single, senior couple, or lifetime membership of The J automatically qualify for a Heritage Center membership without having to pay the $60 annual fee. While membership is not a requirement to participate, members receive many benefits listed below.

Yom HaShoahPath to Genocide: An Overview of the Holocaust

Although most people have some knowledge about the Holocaust, few have the framework to approach this enormous topic from a perspective of path and process. This talk will discuss the beginnings of the Nazi state in 1933, changes to German society, the development of the final solution, and into Germany conquering more and more of the European continent. Additional topics covered: ghettos, killing actions in the East, the camp system, Auschwitz. Dr. Shelly Cline, Historian at the Midwest Center for Holocaust Education in Overland Park, KS will be presenting. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. Esther Swirk Brown, a crusader in education, committed her life to protecting the rights of a race of people ousted from the rest of society. Esther, married to Paul Brown, were residents of Leawood, Kansas and fought bigotry and threats to ensure all African American children in Northeast Johnson County and Kansas could attend the same schools as Whites. The case went to the United States Supreme Court in 1954. The Justices struck down the practice of separate but equal education facilities for the races. The story of Esther Brown will be told by Marlene Katz, storyteller, who had the privilege of speaking to Paul Brown, her husband, and writing her story in the booklet Peeks from the Past, Congregation B’nai Jehudah. This course provides the framework of knowledge and skills in which to communicate visual ideas. You will learn to see and think like an artist and explore a variety of tools, materials and techniques. Students with little or no prior visual art experience are welcome. You’ll build confidence in visual expression through a variety of compositional tools like organizing shape and space, exploring emotion and color theory. Instructor Michael Pesselato earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Carnegie Mellon University and a Master of Fine Arts from Washington University of St. Louis. He served as the Director of Arts Education at the Oglebay Institute, Stifel Fine Arts Center in Wheeling, West Virginia. The National Museum of Toy and Miniatures educates, inspires, and delights adults and children through the museum’s collection and preservation of toys and miniatures. Located on the University of Missouri - Kansas City campus, the museum exhibits the world’s largest collection of fine-scale miniatures and one of the nation’s largest collections of antique toys.
