Lighting Fundamentals
X
The measure of the total power of light emitted in all directions
The flow of light from a lamp or light fixture
Efficiency= Lumens out of fixture/ Lumens produced by lamp
Lumens
X
It is power emitted by a light source in a particular direction.
It is the SI base unit of luminous intensity.
A common candle emits light with a luminous intensity of roughly one candela
Candela
X
It is the light that strikes a surface.
It is known as Foot-Candles
Footcandle=lumen/sq.ft
In Canada it is known as Lux= lumen/sq.meter
One Footcandle ≈ 10.764 lux
Illuminance
X
FC can be measured using a FC Meter.
FC can be calculated using Photometric programs like AGI32, Visual, or manually.
We use FC in design to meet Codes, Client Criteria's.
IES (Illuminating Engineering Society of North America) Standards.
Illuminance
X
It is the light that is reflected from or emitted through a surface.
It is known as Brightness
Reflectance material and color affects the luminance
Luminance
X
Why is Luminance so important?
It is what we see!!!!

Reflection
Refraction
Principles of Optics
X
It is the change in direction of the light after striking a surface
Types of Refraction Specular Spread Diffuse
Reflection
X
Light Fixtures/Lamps have reflectors.
It is used for indirect lighting.
It is used for wall washers
Reflection
X
Light bends passes from one medium to another.
Light fixtures with lenses have refractors.
