Pre-writing
(10 min)
Class, can you tell me, what is the text
about?
Can you tell me, which is the topic
sentence of this short paragraph?
That is what we call the topic
sentence.
Which sentences help to elaborate
and tell us more about the topic?
So, how do we write a simple
paragraph? How do we start it off? With
a topic sentence? Or with a supporting
sentence?
Introducing topic sentence and
supporting sentence
1. Students receive the handouts
for reading.
2. Students are told to read the
handouts silently and underline
words that they do not understand.
3. Students are given the
opportunity to ask questions
regarding the text.
4. Students are asked to indicate
the main idea of the text.
5. Students attention is then
directed towards the supporting
details of the main idea.
6. Students are then asked how a
simple paragraph is structured,
while teacher asks questions to
guide their understanding.
To ensure
students
understand how to
use a topic
sentence and
supporting
sentences in
writing a
paragraph.
