From the Rector

Fr. McDuffie

Dear Friends in Christ,

If you have been in our Parish House over the last several months, you have surely noticed the beautiful physical transformation of our offices and meeting spaces, with new rugs, carpeting, new lamps, and newly painted walls with a terrific color scheme. Much of this is due to the aesthetic sensibility and labor of Suzanne Viglianti and her family.

For many years now, Suzanne has tirelessly given of herself in overseeing the ministry of counting the monetary contributions that Christ Church receives. Suzanne serves as our volunteer pledge accounting secretary, making sure that your contributions are accurately recorded in our database (which is why it is so important that you write your pledge number on every check you give to the church!).

Suzanne does this work in a small financial office upstairs in the Parish House, and several years ago she said that she wanted to repaint that room and spruce it up. We gave her permission to do so, and what has followed since is a systematic repainting of the entire Parish House. First the financial office; then Cindy Simpson’s office, followed by my office; Judith Schneider’s office; then Michele Craig’s office. Next came the smaller conference room on the first floor, and then this past spring, the rest of the downstairs. In early summer, a professional painter was engaged to do the stairwell and hallway upstairs. One room remains: the workroom on the second floor.

In all of this, Suzanne has contributed her gift of interior design, coupled with gifts of materials and the painting skills of herself, and her husband John. On many weekends, one could find the Vigliantis painting away (Did you know that painting is a form of devotion and prayer?), and at certain times, I found Suzanne and John joined by Suzanne’s mother Marie, Suzanne’s sister Melinda, and daughter Rachel! Truly this has been a family affair, and I wanted to take this opportunity to publicly thank Suzanne and family for their inspiration and great work to make the Parish House a beautiful place in which to work. This devotion and vision is truly an inspiration to us all. God bless you, Suzanne!

What might each of us offer in thanksgiving to God, in the service of Christ Church? Have you ever considered a call to discern a role as a volunteer servant minister? We need more counters at Christ Church to assist Suzanne and others. We need more faithful persons to serve in the ministry of being an Altar Guild member (please see the article below for more information). We need more people to serve as ushers at Sunday morning services. We could use more capable persons to assist in tracking property and maintenance needs. Persons with an interest in community outreach and social ministry are needed as well. More Sunday morning greeters are welcomed, too! We don’t

always know what each of you is gifted at or what might interest you. May the Holy Spirit guide you to consider how you could help! And please let me know.

Finally, as we have passed the formal ending of our fall stewardship campaign (“Give ‘til It Feels Good!), have you made a personal pledge of financial support of Christ Church for 2016? The participation and contribution of everyone is necessary for Christ Church to remain strong and carry out its mission and ministry.

As we journey through Advent and Christmas, may we be reminded of God’s precious gift of God’s own self in the Incarnation – and may we be reminded of how we can thank God in return, through the gifts of ourselves, and our time, talent, and treasure.

A Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!

Faithfully and Sincerely,

John+

Adult Forum Save the Date!

On Sunday, January 10th, Adult Forum will host a Lenten Devotional Writing Workshop at 10:10 a.m. in the Murdock Room. Please join us!

Adult Forum Schedule for December 2015 10:15 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

Murdock Room

Liturgy in the 21st Century At Adult Forum on December 13th, The Rev. Peter E. Bastien will lead a discussion of liturgy in the 21st century. He will ask us to consider questions such as:

1. What is the purpose of liturgical worship for 21st century Christians?

2. What is the relationship between worship and faith, or between liturgy and doctrine? Does liturgy teach a previously held doctrinal position or does doctrine arise out of reflection on liturgy and prayer?

3. How and to what does liturgy witness in a secular culture that has largely forgotten the importance of spiritual concerns?

4. What do anthropologists mean when they call liturgy "enacted myth"?

Obviously, we cannot exhaustively cover all these topics in one session. Our goal will be to begin a conversation about the vital importance of worship in our time.

Worship

Additional Altar Guild Members Needed

You have probably not given much thought to how bread and wine appear for our worship services, how the stack is assembled, or what’s involved in getting the candles to burn well. Now is your opportunity to learn and participate in the process. Altar Guild needs YOU. We are a small group of about 17 volunteers, women and men of all ages, who serve on a crew of three for two weeks at a time. We prepare for all services including regular Sunday worship, the Wednesday healing service, baptisms, weddings, funerals, and school holy communion.

If you are interested in providing a valuable service to our church community, learning new things, working behind the scenes, and meeting other fine volunteers, or would like to know more about what Altar Guild does, please contact Anna Von Arx at 301-838-9284 or [email protected]

Current active Altar Guild members are: Cheryl Burruss Renfroe, Michelle Dawson, Doug Dawson, Connie Heister, Denise Jay, Sally Jones, Moss Kendrix, Eva Lin, Karen Mulzac, Khalisa Phillips Steve Sells, Mie Shukutani, Gwen Snowden, Anna Von Arx, Linda Wright, Alice Yator and Sheryl Zwerski. Any of us will be happy to answer your questions.

Christian Faith

The Studies in Christian Faith class meets in the Parish House each Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. Please join us in this adult class for the review and discussion of current theological and philosophical topics. We are currently reading and discussing Karen Armstrong's book Fields of Blood: Religion and the History of Violence; Alfred A. Knoff, publisher, 2014.

Advent in Narnia A Three-week devotional study

December 2nd, 9th, and 16th at 7:30 p.m. Led by Brad Linboom

The season of Advent begins November 29th. This four-week season before Christmas is a time of expectation and preparation for the coming of the Christ child. You are invited to join us this year as we explore the wonderful themes found in C.S. Lewis’ masterpiece, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Each week, we will consider an Advent theme based on some aspect of the book like the Wardrobe, the Witch, and the Lion. Whether you’ve read the book or seen the movie, or even if you’ve never been exposed to the enchanting world of Narnia, there will be something for everyone as we revisit C.S. Lewis’ world. Come join us for any or all of these Advent evenings in the Parish House. If you have a personal copy of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, please feel free to bring that along with you too.

If you are interested in spending the entire season of Advent in Narnia, there is a fantastic daily devotional that has just been published by a fellow Episcopalian and priest, Heidi Haverkamp

entitled Advent in Narnia: Reflections for the Season. While not necessary for this three-week study, this can be a fantastic way to enter into this season on a daily basis. If you are interested in picking up a copy, please contact the church office at 301-762 – 2191, or email [email protected] before November 24th, and a copy will be ordered for pickup at the church for a cost of $13.

We look forward to having you join us in exploring the “borderland” as described by the Bishop of Chicago, The Rt. Rev. Jeffrey Lee: “moving from the world of flat practicality and cynicism to the possibility of one filled with delight and risk and enchantment, one in which Christ is ‘on the move’ in our lives.”

Music At Christ Church Advent Is Nearly Upon Us

This year, we are able to observe an unusually full Advent season, with ample time to devote to preparations for each of the four Sundays leading up to Christmas. As we begin year C in the Eucharistic readings (Gospels drawn primarily from Luke), the music of the hymns and Choir anthems reflects a different focus each week.

Advent I includes the text, “There will be signs in the sun and moon and stars.” Advent II begins the John the Baptist section which includes, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare ye the way of the Lord.” And this is continued on Advent III with the lines, “but he who is mightier than I is coming….he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.”

It is on Advent III, also known as Gaudete Sunday, that we read the wonderful text in Philippians 4:4-7 “Rejoice in the Lord alway, and again I say, rejoice. Let your softness be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.” We have no fewer than three delightful musical settings of this text: one imitative polyphonic motet from the hand of an anonymous Renaissance composer, another dance-like Baroque anthem from the pen of Henry Purcell (court composer to William and Mary), and a third contemporary composition (in the style of Handel) which music director Tad Cavuoti composed some years ago for our Choristers.

Advent IV has many texts associated with the Blessed Virgin Mary, and we will include the Magnificat, Ave Maria, Dixit Maria, and the lovely late 20th century Hymne al la Vierge by French composer Pierre Villette.

At 9:00 a.m. services during Advent, we sing a musical setting of the Kyrie, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei based on the hymn “Creator of the stars of night”. We started learning this music a decade ago, with the Kyrie for Choristers, congregation, and bells. In succeeding years, we have added the Sanctus and Agnus Dei.

At 11:00 a.m. services, we use the ancient Gregorian Chant “Missa Marialis”, also known as “Cum jubilo” or Mass IX. This has traditionally been sung at Eucharists honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary in December, May, and August. Pages of this music from an historic 17th century Spanish manuscript will be on display in the Choir Room. Please stop by to get in touch with a spiritual source several centuries old.

Mass of the Month & Messiah – December 6th

We are blessed in being able to offer polyphonic Mass settings as part of the monthly musical cycle at Christ Church. On Sunday, December 6th at the 11:00 a.m. Eucharist, the Choristers, Teen Choral Scholars, Choir, and Staff Singers will sing the music of German renaissance composer Hans Leo Hassler, including portions of his Missa super Dixit Maria based on the Annunciation Motet (Mary said to the Angel).

Page 6: 1215 Dec Angelus - Christ Episcopal Church · The Angelus December 2015 The Angelus is published 10 months a year. Editors: Kathy Moch & Tim Smeltzer ... or what’s involved in getting

Hassler’s music is lively and direct, with a folk-like quality woven into the imitative polyphony. Its simplicity and beauty allow us to delight in its liturgical use in our own parish church some 400 years and 3,000 miles removed from its original creation.

Within the same 11:00 a.m. service will be music from Handel’s Messiah: “Comfort ye, my people”, Ev’ry valley shall be exalted”, and “And the glory of the Lord”, using texts drawn from the Old Testament Lesson for the day. We hope you will be able to join us for this wonderful occasion.

National Philharmonic Singers and Takoma Ensemble

Please join us at Christ Church on Saturday, December 5th, 2015 at 8:00 p.m. where the National Philharmonic Singers and Takoma Ensemble will present a concert of holiday music.

Large works on the concert for the combined ensembles include the Francesco Durante’s "Magnificat," “Christmas Concerto” by Giuseppe Torelli for string orchestra, and Cecilia McDowall’s “A Winter’s Night” which is a collection of famous Christmas carols including “In Dulci Jubilo,” “Sussex Carol,” "Noël Nouvelet,” and others.

One of the most exciting features will be new arrangements, including “A King Shall Come” by Alistair Coleman, an exciting young Rockville composer, and “Veni Sancte Spiritus” for choir with strings, by Peter Kadeli from Fairfax, VA. Also, National Philharmonic singer Ed Rejuney will debut his delightful arrangement of carols with new lyrics.

Familiar family carols such as Jingle Bells, The Twelve Days of Christmas, and Carols for All to Sing complete this traditional holiday event, conducted by Victoria Gau and Stan Engebretson. Please come and join us!

All donations will benefit the Community Ministries of Rockville. For more information, please visit nationalphilharmonic.org or call 301-493-9283, ext. 116

Inside Outreach

An update from the Christ Church Outreach Committee

Galatians 3:28: There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

English Conversation Class

Every Monday evening, September through May, the Christ Church dining room fills with laughter and companionship, a sure sign that the English Conversation Class is in session. While the aim is to help the newcomers to the U.S. improve their English, we often end up giving tips to each other. Students pass along tips about the best plumbers to use in our area and where to go to get authentic Turkish meals. In turn, the teachers help the students cope with getting around on the bus and dealing with landlords. Almost 100 people have been in our program since we began in 2003. We’ve seen several students take the plunge and go for the difficult citizenship test. Others have learned enough English to cope with the written part of the driver’s test. For me, the most interesting aspect of the class is how different and yet how alike our students are. This year, our students are from Turkey, Iran, Russia, China, Korea, and several South American countries. Each brings to the class a unique perspective about what they think living in the U.S. means to them, but all of our students say they appreciate the time and effort that the volunteers at Christ Church put in to make this work. If you would like to learn more about our program, talk to English Conversation Class Organizer, Mary Belknap (301) 251-1486. The Outreach Committee meets the second Monday of every other month at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish House. The next meeting will be Monday, November 9th. All are welcome to attend and learn more about the opportunities to live our faith through service to those who need us most. For further information, contact Rebecca Browning at [email protected].
