December 2, 2016 Dear Parents and/or Guardians, Earlier this year many families spent time with our teachers setting student-learning goals for the 2016 – 2017 school year. In February, we will take the time to look at our students’ progression toward those goals. Goal setting and achievement data are crucial to long-term student growth. The same can be said about schools. Developing school goals and analyzing achievement data are important steps to take each and every year, and vital in the long-term success of a school. At Prairieview, we spend an entire year looking at and developing school improvement goals. We use national and local assessments as well as best practices to develop our goals. We then design our professional development around those goals to best meet the needs of all students. Our school improvement plan is accessible on our school website and is updated often. Our school’s achievement data is shared many different ways throughout the year. During our winter conference many of our local assessments will be shared with you to highlight student growth. As for the national assessments, the Illinois Interactive Report Card is a wonderful tool for all parents to see how local schools are performing from year to year. You can access our school’s report card at http://illinoisreportcard.com/ . Type in the name of our school and much of our data will be available to you. A new element of the interactive report card is the 5Essentials Survey. This survey is given out every other year to community members and staff, with the most recent survey available to be taken now. This data goes beyond annual testing and takes a look at how the staff and community feel about the school. I encourage you take the survey at http://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois/survey/parent/ and share your thoughts about our school. Finally, the interactive report card will show you the “fast facts” about our school. These facts are unique to every school and highlight the dynamics that comprise our school and student-population. As a result of some of these dynamics, our school has recently become a Title 1 targeted school. This qualifies us to receive a portion of our district’s Title 1 funds to better support students in both reading and math. I encourage everyone to take some time to review our school improvement action plan and our interactive report card data. If you have any questions or suggestions for improvement, please do not hesitate to contact me at 847.543.4230 or [email protected] . Sincerely, Vince Murray Prairieview School 103 E. Dear Parents and/or Guardians, Earlier this year many families spent time with our teachers setting student-learning goals for the 2016 – 2017 school year.

You can access our school’s report card at http://illinoisreportcard.com/.

If you have any questions or suggestions for improvement, please do not hesitate to contact me at 847.543.4230 or [email protected].

Sinceramente,

Vince Murray

   December,   2016

Dear   Parent/Guardian,

Parents,   teachers   and   selected   students   in   Community   Consolidated   School   District   46   will   have   an   opportunity   to   participate   in

the   fourth   annual   statewide   Illinois   5Essentials   Survey.   This   survey,   available   in   English   or   Spanish,   is   designed   to   generate   a

detailed   picture   of   the   inner   workings   of   your   child’s   school.   As   a   parent,   this   opportunity   will   allow   you   to   share   your   thoughts

on   the   important   elements   of   school   effectiveness   in   a   survey   about   your   child’s   school.      On   behalf   of   the   Illinois   State   Board   of

Education,   the   Illinois   5Essentials   Survey   will   be   administered   online   by   UChicago   Impact   at   the   University   of   Chicago.   The

survey   gathers   data   related   to   five   indicators   that   can   predict   important   student   outcomes,   including   improved   attendance   and

larger   test   score   gains.   These   five   indicators   that   affect   and   predict   school   success   are:

● Effective   Leaders

● Collaborative   Teachers

● Involved   Families

● Supportive   Environments

● Ambitious   Instruction

Prior   research   in   more   than   400   schools   has   shown   that   schools   that   were   strong   on   at   least   three   of   these   “5Essential”   indicators

were   10   times   more   likely   to   improve   student   learning   gains   in   math   and   reading   than   those   that   were   weak   on   three   or   more

Essentials.

If   at   least   20   percent   of   parents   complete   this   survey   for   each   school,   a   parent   supplement   will   be   generated.   The   parent   data   will

not   be   reported   on   the   State   Report   Card,   but   will   be   used   by   the   district   as   a   measure   of   continuous   improvement.      Teachers   and

students   in   grades   68   will   be   responding   to   this   survey.      The   information   from   these   surveys   will   be   included   in   the   State   School

Report   Card.   Your   participation   in   the   parent   portion   of   the   survey   will   help   us   understand   the   conditions   at   your   child’s   school

and   guide   improvement.   Your   identity   and   survey   responses   will   be   kept   completely   confidential   and   will   never   be   connected   to

you   or   your   child.      For   parents,   the   Illinois   5Essentials   Survey   will   be   available   between   December   5,   2016   to   January   16,   2017.

To   take   the   survey   please   visit    https://survey.5essentials.org/Illinois/    and   select   the   appropriate   survey   to   begin.

For   students,   the   Illinois   5Essentials   Survey   will   be   available   between   December   3,   2016   and   December   16,   2016   during   school.

This   survey   should   take   approximately   25   minutes   to   complete.      Please   see   the   additional   information   regarding   the   Student

Engaging Presentations..... -3D Printing!

In this session, we will explore the wonders of 3D printing. First, we will learn how 3D printers work and describe different 3D printing technologies. We will discuss the various ways that 3D printing is used and show some real-life examples. There will be a working 3D printer in the classroom. The students will then have the opportunity to put together a 3D printed “puzzle” to reveal what is being made in the printer.

-The Science of Sleep

A fun and interesting discussion of sleep from birth through teenage years. We'll

explore normal and abnormal sleep behaviors in children by talking about topics like: Do other kids around the world sleep like me? What are common sleep disorders in

school-aged children? Is my sleep 'normal'? Do my dreams actually mean anything? Is it just me, or are all kids afraid of the dark? We'll end with a quick question and answer

session.

-How’s the Weather?

Have fun learning about this stormy topic with a cool game that will leave your brain filled with a tornado of facts.

-Everyday Chemistry

Whether you knew it or not, chemistry is going on around you all the time. Come and learn about the chemistry that takes place in your life everyday

-Water Detectives

Do you know where your tap water comes from? Learn about your tap water and how scientists test water. Then run your own water tests in this hands-on session.
