Major Gain from Minor Aspects

by Larry Martin

OUR COMPUTERS ARE CONSTANTLY

sending us little messages that

require a response—Your Anti-

Virus needs updating. If we don’t take the

time to make these minute messages a

priority, our system will eventually fail.

In astrology, the same thing can happen if

you neglect minor aspects. They have

seldom been written about yet are no less

important. Often, I have received major

kudos from clients when I shed light on

these neglected aspects. I’ve had my

chart read for years and no one has ever

told me that before! Their previous astro-

logers failed to deliver the full depth and

accuracy available. This article will discuss

three unsung aspects—quintile, septile, and

novile—and provide examples of charts that

come into high definition focus when these

minor messages are given importance.

Aspects used by more mathematically-

minded astrologers, prior to 1995 BC (Be-

fore Computers), measured a variety of

relationships between planets. They deli-

vered insights that were amazing, with in-

formation that helped clients see a deeper

relationship with themselves. Years ago,

this was a lot of work. One had to use a

dial or calculator to see the often awkward

minor aspects—let alone interpret them. Us-

ing today’s software, the awkwardness is

gone. Aspectarian tables display every asp-

ect you can think of (and some will help you

create new ones). The calculations are done

instantly, and all you have to do is interpret

them. They’re probably all important, right?

Over the years, schools of astrology have

placed emphasis on different parts of the

chart, overlooking minor aspects. For

example, Cosmobiology students focus on

planetary relationships and midpoints.

Through my years of studying

Cosmobiology, I developed a keen

understanding of the importance of hard

aspects. However, astrologer Rick

Levine’s 2005 lecture for the Astrological

Society of Kentucky in Louisville, in

which he described the quintile as a

major— not a minor—aspect, opened a

whole new world for me.

Ptolemy and his aspects derived from

dividing 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 into 360. That

exercise gives us the major aspects. But

what if we take all of the integers between

1 and 9? We can divide each integer into

360 and come up with aspects we would

have missed if we were limited to

Ptolemy’s five.

Another term for those integers we’re

dividing with is known as the system

called harmonics, which was popularized

by the late John Addey in his book

Harmonics in Astrology. (Addey’s teach-

ings influenced David Hamblin and

Charles Harvey whose work with

harmonics is quoted and used in this

article-Ed.) For example, if we say that the

Moon is opposite Saturn (180 degrees= 2/

360), we’re also saying that the Moon and

Saturn have a 2nd harmonic relationship.

In his lecture, Levine compares harmonics

in astrology to the harmonics in music. He

says that the lower the harmonic, the

louder or stronger the sound.

In both music and astrology, all harmonics

have importance. The trick is to be able to

Dear Members,

John Marchesella NCGR Chair

M A T H!!! Just the mention of the word conjures up memories of Sister Helen

Patricia, slide rulers, and summer school in algebra class. And the word, calculation.Isn’t that a term for the psychological m.o. of a very manipulative person?

Well, lay your fears to rest. NCGR and its sister organization, NCGR-PAA, arewell in the process of remedying the challenge of learning the math calculations, specifically for the purpose of becoming certified by NCGR-PAA and generally, for your own confidence in what Rob Hand once called the yoga of the chart.

On the NCGR website, www.geocosmic.org, in the section for members, there arewritten instructions on how to do the math. These were written by Joan Negus, wonderful teacher and NCGR EducationDirector from the early days of thecertification program. And you can’t beat the price. It’s free!

And in the very near future, maybe even by the time this newsletter hits yourcomputer screen, NCGR-PAA is making available a video version of Level I math, thecalculation of the natal horoscope, starring none other than yours truly! This mightnot be free, but it’s well worth the price, even if I do say so myself, and I promise youwill get this easy step-by-step method, even the interpolation. Egads!

Kaye Shinker, the NCGR Education Director, is giving an enthusiastic boost toprospective teachers in the local areas around the country, so we can get someclasses going the old fashion way. Live and in person! But for more information, she can be reached virtually via the NCGR website.

Our pilot program for on-line presentations is underway, and we hope to bringyou more lectures and workshops on various topics in astrology with someterrific teachers. We’ll have some specifics to report on that in our nextmemberletter and stay tuned for information on MP3 recordings from oursuccessful September webinars.

Shirley Soffer, the NCGR-PAA Education Director, is always available forquestions about certification and she goes out of her way to make it possible forstudents and professionals to be certified. Shirley and I go way back, and I cantell you she is dedicated beyond belief to the Certification Program. She can bereached through the NCGR-PAA website, www.astrologersalliance.org. Localchapters often sponsor their own dates for the exam, but testing is set for May 30,2012, at UAC too. You can register for that on the NCGR-PAA website.

Last and far from least is the NCGR-PAA Study Guide, which is a handy dandytool for everybody! If you’re preparing for the exam, the Study Guide will guideyou through what you need to know for each level. If you are an anti-examstudent, the Study Guide is an excellent primer for you. And if you are a teacheror a teacher wannabee, the Study Guide is just the right class outline for you. It’sworth every bit of the $20, and it can only be purchased via the NCGR-PAAwebsite, www.astrologersalliance.org.

As we approach the holiday season, and believe it or not, it will be here beforeyou know it, please remember that NCGR is a tax-exempt organization. So, ifyou survived this summer’s volatile stock market with some spare change inyour pocket, please think of NCGR for the year’s end charitable contributions.

Talk to you next time!

NCGR AT UAC cont’d from p. 1

Interview with Bruce Scofield

Bruce Scofield is a well-known

author, publisher (One Reed Pub-

lications), teacher, and consultant.

He received a Ph.D. from the University of

Massachusetts and presently teaches there.

He was also on the Kepler College faculty.

Bruce has lectured at conferences and for

astrology groups around the world and

will present two lectures at UAC, as well as

a one-of-a-kind NCGR pre-conference

workshop on Thursday May 24, 2012 (see

left). I asked Bruce the following questions

and he was kind enough to take time from

his busy schedule to answer them.

Ronnie Dreyer: Can you sum up what the

workshop will be about and what motiva-

ted you to speak about how to talk to the

press about 2012. I think that is a terrific

angle. Why should people sign up for it?

Bruce Scofield: There is a massive

amount of confusing information circulat-

ing in the media regarding the 2012 Maya

connection. Nearly all of it is not science,

some is religious in nature and some is

just the product of unrestrained imagina-

tions and should probably be called,

putting it nicely, art. I’ve been studying

Maya astronomy and calendrics for 30

years now and have published regularly

on the subject since 1987—so I have

something to say. My message, or more

accurately report, is based mostly on facts

that archaeologists and archaeo-astrono-

mers would agree with. I have gone a bit

further in places regarding the astrological

content of Maya astronomy, and in this

regard have been exporing some new

territory that is not included in academic

investigations. What I have to offer the

press is a sober view of the 2012 Maya

calendar ending that argues very strongly

for a perspective that nearly nobody else

has made—that the “Mayan Calendar” is

actually a kind of astrology.

Ronnie: What do you think the main

problems are in conveying to the press

what the actual facts are as opposed to all

the bogus theories out there. How can

you really direct the press properly when

mostly they are concerned about the

sensational aspects of it.

Bruce: The biggest problem with the

press, and with the general public as well,

is that they don’t understand science and

2012 and The Mayan Calendar: Our

Clients, The Press and Our Profes-

sional Image with Bruce Scofield. Wondering what to tell clients and

friends when they ask about the end of

the world in 2012? If the press calls, would

you like an intelligent, articulate way to

answer their questions? Bruce Scofield,

the foremost astrological authority on

Mesoamerican astrology, will enlighten

you with the answers and assist us in

maintaining a professional image to the

media. And you can be sure they are

going to ask!

find it boring. In order to really grasp the

nature of the Maya 2012 event you must

be willing to think about numbers and

how they relate to planetary cycles. This

disconnect is the same one that astrolo-

gers face—the subject is just too compli-

cated for prime time. If it is “dumbed

down” too much is lost and this opens up

the subject for ridicule by scientists who

hold the podium. The bogus theories, the

products of overactive imaginations

driven by collective fears, are far more

attractive to the press and the public.

These are all easily understood as they

play on fears and hopes. Everyone is

scared of gigantic earthquakes, fascinated

by contact with extraterrestrials and

hoping for the return of a mythical golden

age. So science is boring and sensational-

ism sells ads— it may be just that simple.

Ronnie: How did you get started learn-

ing about the Mayan calendar and which

recources have you used to learning more

about it.

Bruce: I got interested in the 1970s after

studying Aztec and Maya culture and

then traveled to Mexico, Guatemala, and

Honduras many times to see the ancient

sites firsthand. I made a point to read all

the relevant academic literature and also

listen to the indigenous people and their

experiences. I’ve got a large annotated

bibiliography posted on my website

www.onereed.com.

Ronnie: What are the best sources that

you recommend to people who wish to

know more. Is there anything else that you

want people to know?

Bruce: I would recommend to people

that as a start they look over my webpage as

it presents a wide range of rescources on

Mesoamerican astrology, which includes the

Long Count calendar, a/k/a “Mayan

Calendar.” There are a number of very

informative books on the subject to-day, but

one has to week through many unreferenced

and misleading books to find them.

Ronnie: Thanks Bruce. See you at UAC.

MINOR ASPECTS cont’d from p. 1

hear or interpret them. Many astrologers

have written about the importance of

harmonics and the aspects they help

define.

The late astrologer Charles Harvey, who

worked closely with Addey, wrote about

the importance of harmonics, and implies

that the numbers five, seven, and nine are

central to understanding free will and

consciousness (Charles Harvey and

Michael Harding, Working With Astrology,

London: Penguin Arkana, 1992, pp. 184-

86). According to psychologist James

Hillman, understanding free will and

consciousness are at the core of attaining

self-awareness (Ibid, p. 269).

Reinhold Ebertin, who pioneered the

system of Cosmobiology, quotes

Johannes Kepler and Dr. Walter Koch

when referring to aspects. Ebertin utilizes

Kepler’s mathematical relationships

between the planets (aspects) and agrees

with Koch that all aspects are important,

with the stronger (louder) aspects having

the most relevance. Ebertin separates

aspects into two groups: hard and soft.

He explains that the hard aspects (har-

monics 1, 2, 4 and 8) have a greater impact

in science than the soft (harmonics 3 and

6). (Reinhold Ebertin, The Combination of

Stellar Influences, Tempe: AFA Publica-

tions, 1972, pp. 13-14.)

If we agree that Ptolemy, Harvey and

Ebertin’s numbers are important to

astrology, and we combine their numbers,

don’t we arrive at the harmonics 1 through

9? How many of us use all of those

numbers? If we use all of these numbers in

our daily lives, why not in astrology?

Most of us agree that Ptolemy’s major

aspects are important. They may even be

the true building blocks to basic astrol-

ogy. But what can we learn by studying

Harvey’s numbers or Ebertin’s? Plenty!

For those unfamiliar with the aspects they

produce, see right.

Many in Cosmobiology are familiar with

the 8th harmonic aspects. I will detail the

lesser known, but just as important, 5th,

7th and 9th harmonic aspects. Where orbs

are concerned, less is more. A more exact

focus is needed for our computer

software. I keep the orb to less than two

degrees for all higher harmonic aspects.

The Quintile (5th Harmonic)

The 5th harmonic, producing the

quintile, is a powerful aspect to discuss

during a consultation. Quintiles have a

louder sound than sextiles (6th harmonic)

and have a greater importance. Harvey

values the quintile through Pythagoras’

logic that the number two is the first

female number and the number three is

the first male number. Added together,

they become the number of Man (Charles

Harvey and Michael Harding, Working

With Astrology, p. 185). This places the

aspect at the central focus of creativity.

Having a quintile between two planets

gives us the gift or art of their planetary

themes.

Take Oprah Winfrey’s chart (see above)

as an example. Certainly, you could talk

about her conjunctions in Aquarius.

Hope, idealism, and the energy to

exchange innovative ideas is profound.

Add to this the trine between Mercury and

Jupiter and you know this is a dynamic

speaker with plenty to say, but what would

she talk about? A Golden Yod is a quintile

linked to two biquintiles (144°=72°x2). The

primary quintile is between Saturn and the

North Node. Oprah’s 3rd house, Saturn in

Scorpio, digs deep into the psyche of

those she communicates with. She’s calm

under pressure. The quintile to the Node

(that Saturn disposes) shows the tremen-

dous creativity she has toward organizing

and strategizing solutions to problems that

are taboo. The biquintiles to Jupiter in her

10th house of career show her to be a

master at expansion and publicity of topics

through communication (Jupiter in Gemini).

How powerful is this? This level of

specificity can build credibility in your

communications with clients and greatly

enhance your consultations.

Without credible communications,

and lots of it, hearts and minds of

others are never captured.

John P. Kotter

At the very least, the quintile can take a

chart reading from generally entertaining

to fascinatingly accurate.

The Septile (7th Harmonic)

Understanding the septile (7th harmonic)

is a bit more challenging. In his book

Harmonic Charts David Hamblin wrote

that after one, five is the first prime

number and seven is the last prime of the

single digits. Further, five is the number

of Man and seven is the number of God

(David Hamblin, Harmonic Charts, Wel-

lingborough: Aquarian Press, 1987, p. 64).

Man attempted to seek out connection

with divine order by naming seven days

of the week and seven planets. However,

prime numbers are by their nature

inconvenient mathematically. Perhaps

that’s why Ptolemy ignored them.

Rodney Collin’s masterful text The Theory

of Celestial Influence emphasizes the

importance of seven-ness and points out

a correlation between planetary cycles

and the seven musical tones in nature.

Here we begin to see the link between the

number seven and creativity. The

potential divinity of the number seven

connects it to creation and creative

processes. The divine sparks of imagina-

tion, fantasy, and inspiration set the stage

for growth and opportunities.

Imagination is more important than

knowledge.

Albert Einstein

Masterful works of art and science that

have propelled civilizations forward have

occurred when creativity sparked ingenu-

ity. Leonardo Da Vinci’s chart illustrates

the divine brushstrokes of the septile.

In Leonardo Da Vinci’s chart, Mercury and

Mars form a septile aspect. This repre-

sents his gifts toward both learning and

action. Da Vinci’s keen ability to study and

think creatively (Mercury) blended with a

strong capacity to take action (Mars). This

allowed him to bring his inspirations into

the material world through art and experi-

mentation.

Next we can look at musician David

Bowie’s chart. A septile exists between

Venus and Neptune, giving an almost

cosmic inspiration between art (Venus)

and fantasy (Neptune). Creating his own

eclectic style of music, he won success

with Space Oddity and Ziggy Stardust

and The Spiders From Mars. Who else

could combine styles of John Lennon and

Brian Eno, to create Glam Rock? Bowie

then crafted one of the most successful

music careers of all time, selling over 136

million albums.

The Novile Aspect (9th Harmonic)

The novile (9th harmonic), is mathemati-

cally convenient. Nine divides into 360 to

give us 40°; yet, it’s seldom used or

discussed. My first introduction to this

aspect came from Myrna Loftus’ book

Spiritual Approach to Astrology. In her

work, she listed planets in novile to one

another as restrictions that require a level

of maturity to overcome. A re-evaluation

has to take place between ages 36-42 in

order to understand the lessons of the

aspect. Rather than treating the 9th

harmonic as restrictive, Indian astrology

(Jyotisa) makes use of the Navamsa

Chart, from which the 9th Harmonic chart

is derived, alongside the natal chart as a

guide to the ideal.

Harvey points out that the nine repre-

sents the fruits of one’s labors (Charles

Harvey and Michael Harding, Working

With Astrology, p. 254). (In fact many

believe the Navamsa is used to show the

fruits of one’s labor, and that the

Navamsa chart matures and achieves its

promise later in one’s life-Ed.) He

mentions that Hamblin called it a ‘non-

assertive power’ and describes it as being

more accepting of what is rather than

trying to force any kind of change.

Harvey describes that it is the reward of

maturity and patience as middle age

approaches. We achieve a certain level of

maturity by middle age. Patience and

perseverance, usually considered marks

of wisdom, help to cultivate recognition

and reward.

Master musician and producer Brain Eno

(see chart above) coined the term

Generative Music after his 40th birthday,

expressing all three of his significant

noviles. Eno has composed with many of

the world’s most famous artists and has

won many awards for his behind the

scenes work. In spite of huge recognition

within his field, he is hardly a household

name compared to who he has worked

with. A 2010 interview with The Guardian

speaks volumes about his restrictions

that he’s still stuck talking about the same

topics in life.

What I find both disappointing and

reassuring is that I was saying exactly

those things [long ago] I will be saying

today. I don’t know what to make of that.

A few different references, but the basic

ideas haven’t changed at all. No

difference whatsoever! I suppose it’s

good to see I’ve been consistent.(www.

guardian.co.uk/ music/2010/jan/17/

brian-eno-interview-paul-morley).

Eno’s Venus-Saturn novile highlights the

rewards seen later in life. We can apply

the slower moving planet’s influence

upon the faster and add the delineation of

delayed reward. In a session, this would

reassure Eno that he would achieve more

with age! Eno’s chart shows three

additional noviles: Sun-Venus, Uranus-

North Node and Chiron-Neptune.

The Sun-Venus novile demonstrates how

his nurturing values (Venus in Cancer)

have helped him make a living (2nd house

Taurus Sun, disposing Leo planets in

5th). He has done far more for others than

himself. Eno’s Uranus-North Node novile

shows how his unique approach using

electronics and technology evolve more

quickly as he ages. Uranus in Gemini

indeed brings ideas into manifestation

(North Node in Taurus). This coincides

beautifully with Moore’s Law that

technology evolves exponentially with

time (Moore’s Law. www.en.wikipedia.

org/wiki/Moore%27s_law). The Chiron-

Neptune novile further demonstrates

frustrations with love and sex (Neptune in

Libra opposed to the ascendant and

making a 7th house link to Chiron in

Scorpio). Here, in another interview is an

obvious parallel to Chiron.

Convinced that he was terribly ugly and

that he would never be able to get girls

(Chiron–rejection by the feminine), Eno

adopted a stratagem that was to serve him

well in his career. He confessed I began

cultivating certain eccentricities, figuring

that perhaps then girls would like me.

(David Sheppard, On a Faraway Beach:

The Life and Times of Brian Eno, Chicago:

Chicago Review Press, 2009.) His eccentric

dress was mostly a ruse (Neptune) to win

girls. We see this Chiron-Neptune novile

working as he was able to attract a mate

and garnered the attentions of thousands

of women. The novile does not deliver

permanent restrictions. They simply

require patience and a more accepting

understanding.

The messages from these minor aspects

can add credibility and depth to a

consultation. The quintile breeds

creativity. The septile opens doorways to

otherwise inexplicable inspiration. The

novile shows that middle age acceptance

brings rewards. Taken together, they offer

major benefits for life planning. It’s time to

stop minimizing their importance and

include them as major aspects.

A Royal Wedding by Pat Geisler

AROYAL WEDDING IS SEVERAL CUTS of

spectacle above the wedding of an

ordinary couple. The British

royalty is probably the most glamorous of

the world’s current royal families. It is

related to all of Europe’s remaining royals

and is the only one that has managed to

keep its throne for some thousand years or

so. By any measure, it’s got clout.

Prince William and Kate Middleton

launched their official marriage when they

were pronounced man and wife at 11:20

AM BST, April 29, 2011 in London. It was

a big day and millions and millions of

people watched on television. The pomp

and ceremony alone were worth seeing.

It’s pretty hard to

beat youth, beauty,

gorgeous horses,

men in splendid

uniforms, women

in fancy hats and

elegant gilded

carriages that go

back to Queen

Victoria. It was, in

short, a smash

production. But it

didn’t start their

real marriage.

When Diana and Prince Charles were

married the wedding date was much more

significant because they were a

traditional couple; Diana was a virgin

and they had never lived together. This

was not true of William and Kate who

had been living together for a long time.

I’m not going to get into the intimate

details of people’s lives, but when a

couple share the three B’s they are

essentially wed, regardless of the legality

of the thing.

The three Bs are bed, board and the bills.

In other words, a full partnership with

shared responsibility for the living

quarters is a marriage. Couples have

been quietly moving in together and

living that way for centuries. It’s some-

times called a common law marriage and

most of us these days know plenty of

such couples.

If they get around to the legalization of it

or the blessings of a religious ceremony,

the chart of the wedding does not

describe their future relationship. That has

long since been decided. Instead, it

describes their celebration of the union and

their public personas as a couple. In this

case the wedding day was a chance for a

big party and for William and Kate, marked

the beginning of their official stature as a

royal pair. They left the church with new

titles as the Duke and Duchess of Cam-

bridge. For commoner Kate, who became

the Duchess Catherine, it was an elevation

to royalty but her relationship with William

was already set. It’s a distinction which

apparently has escaped a lot of people.

It’s the reason the wedding chart will not

tell us as clearly about their future

happiness or grief. Like all derivative

charts, it will tell us some things, but it is

not the foundation chart for their lives

ahead. At various times in the years ahead

some astrologers are going to be puzzled

by the contrary indications they see that

don’t seem to match events as closely as

they expect.

But, since we don’t have the date they

actually moved in together, we don’t have

any other chart to use, either. In default,

therefore, this will be the one astrologers

look at.

First we need to look at William’s chart,

since he is a royal heir (see p. 8). He was

born June 21, 1982 at 9:03 PM BST in

London, England.

This charismatic double Cancer has both

Sun and Moon conjunct in the 7th house.

He has Neptune 2° above the ascendant

and Jupiter 2° behind the MC. Both

planets are retrograde. He also has Pluto

at 24° Libra in the 9th house, also

retrograde, and a Mars-Saturn conjunc-

tion. His Venus at 25° Taurus in the 5th

along with Mercury in Gemini in its

own sign opposing Uranus in the 11th.

Venus actually forms a tight yod with

Prince WilliamKate MiddletonWedding

page 8

Pluto and Neptune, not a happy

combination, in my opinion. It widely

opposes Uranus, out of sign, as well.

His chart is similar to that of his mother.

Both were Cancer Suns with Sagittarius

rising. This gives a powerful devotion to

children and family as well as a strong

need for personal freedom.

In Diana’s case, the sign on the MC was

Libra and the ruler Venus at 24° Taurus,

much too close for comfort to Algol, the

fixed star of blood and death (see chart on

p. 9). It participated in a t-square with the

Moon in Aquarius and Uranus in Leo in

the 8th. Her package of planets in the 8th

showed that affairs of that house would

be important to her. Two of them were in

the sign of service, Virgo, and she made

an outstanding contribution to the cause

of AIDS and other diseases that affected

children. She had Neptune in the 10th

trine her Sun, showing the marriage to

Charles. It was retrograde, so she was

never destined for any throne. The

divorce and her death interfered with that.

William’s four-planet grouping is in the

9th house in Libra and Scorpio. His

Jupiter is considered to be on the MC

since older writers have allowed a few

degrees into the 9th to be effective.

Unfortunately, Jupiter is retrograde. His

Sun is tightly inconjunct his retrograde

Uranus and square Mars, ruler of the MC.

Mars and Saturn are conjunct.

These aspects show many problems

ahead for him. He, too, as his mother did,

has Venus conjunct Algol. In his case

Venus is part of a tight yod formation to

his rising Neptune and 9th house Pluto, a

sharp warning of physical danger at some

point in his life. Many years ago I first

saw his chart and that of his father, Prince

Charles. Despite the agreement that

Charles can rule even if married to Camilla,

I did not think then he would reign. I still

don’t, though a very brief tenure is

possible.

The 10th is the house of our place in

society, our occupation, so to speak. With

a retrograde Jupiter on the MC, it is not

always a sure bet to reach one’s goals.

The house is ruled by Scorpio in William’s

chart and both Jupiter, and the Mars-Pluto

rulers are in tough circumstance. What

makes it a little more likely for him than for

company wife because she is always

looking to boost and support her

husband. Since that role requires her to be

a public figure, she will be, but the

marriage itself is more important to her

than her personal fame.

The wedding chart, cast for April 29, 2011

at 11:20 AM BST in London, has 5° Leo

rising (see p. 7). In any wedding chart the

man is ruled by the first house and its

ruler, the Sun and Mars. The woman is

the 7th house, with its ruler, Venus and the

Moon describing her.

William is the Sun in 10 and Mars in its

own sign and accidentally dignified in 10.

It is conjunct Jupiter on one side and

Mercury on the other. A royal package

indeed. The Sun is trine Pluto and sextile

Neptune, indicating a strong, secure man.

Kate is the Aquarian house with Venus

conjunct Uranus and opposed to Saturn.

The Moon is unaspected at 26° Pisces,

giving her a gentle personal image. The

Venus position is one of strong appeal to

the public. Her wardrobe, hair, and figure

will be intensely scrutinized by the public

on a continuing basis.

All the planets ruling them both except

Saturn, retrograde in the 4th, are elevated.

It is a potent public image they will have

and they will be ambassadors for the

crown, for Britain and certainly for the

British people. This dynamic pair will be

his father is the

Mars and Jupiter

mutual reception,

which gives Mars

prominence in the

10th as well as

accidental dignity.

The Duchess

Catherine has a

great chart with his.

She was born

January 9, 1982 in

Reading, England

(see p. 9). Her birth

time is unavailable

so this is a solar

chart with

the planetary

positions for noon.

First of all, she’s a

Capricorn Sun and that’s

the natural partner for any Cancer, since it

occupies the solar 7th house. She also has

the Moon in Cancer, probably close to

William’s North Node of binding

relationships and near his Sun and Moon

in Cancer.

Because they were born in the same year,

they have a similar Mars, Saturn, Pluto,

Jupiter package, though her planets are all

direct. Hers falls in the solar 10th house of

prominence and standing in the

community. Her 1st house contains

Mercury and a retrograde Venus. This

gives her a powerful cardinal t-square,

with a Mars-Venus trine and a Venus-Ura-

nus sextile. That Venus position will keep

her beautiful and charming all her life long.

It is often the case with Capricorns that

their good bones show even in old age.

She will not compete with Diana’s image,

and in fact will be an entirely different type

of royal. While her full Moon at birth

gives her the grace to enjoy attention, she

will not seek it out for herself. She is much

more likely to function as something of a

traditional wife to William, since Saturn so

dominates her solar chart.

Diana’s legacy is all over this family, of

course, and Kate wears Diana’s beautiful

sapphire ring, given to her as an engage-

ment ring by William. Diana was looking

to find herself but Kate already knows

who she is and is a confident Capricorn.

IFOLLOW THE U.S.CHART FOR THE SIGNING

of the Articles of Confederation, which

took place on November 15, 1777 at

12:46 PM in York, Pennsylvania. The late

astrologer David Solte thoroughly

researched this chart, and came up with

this time and date. In this article I would

like to track certain patterns occurring,

which seem to relate perfectly to the

chart.

The chart on p. 11 places the Articles of

Confederation chart relocated to Wash-

ington D.C. (which does not really alter it)

in the inner wheel, with secondary prog-

ressions and transits for August 11, 2011

in the middle and outer wheel, respectively.

On that day, there was a worrisome t-square

consisting of retrograde Pluto at 5° Capri-

corn 12’ opposing progressed Mars at 5°

Cancer 55’, with both squaring square

retrograde Uranus at 4° Aries 9’. All of

this was activated by transiting Mars at

5° Cancer 37’. With slow-moving yet

Chaos, Confusion, and

erratic Uranus involved in this configura-

tion, the stock market had fluctuated

wildly for weeks. Traders were nervous

about when and where this losing streak

was going to end.

Then on Thursday afternoon, August 11

at 4:00 PM, the transiting ascendant

opposed natal U.S. Uranus, and transiting

Mars put even more pressure on the

aforementioned t-square, manifesting in

violence, when a bomb killed five U.S.

troops in southern Afghanistan. You can

even see all of the number 5s that played a

part in the timing of the incident.

Reuters News Service later gave the time

of the incident as 2:28 PM Washington

time, so I did the chart for that time. Retro-

grade Pluto was in the 2nd house oppos-

ing Mars, as well as the progressed U.S.

Mars in the 8th house of life and death.

The ascendant was in Scorpio, again the

sign of life and death. Our natal U.S. Sun

at 23° Scorpio retrograde was in the 2nd

house opposing Mars, as well as the

progressed U.S. Mars in the 8th house of

life and death at that time.

The ascendant was in Scorpio, again the

sign of life and death. Our natal U.S. Sun

at 23° Scorpio 46’ has progressed into the

2nd house (money and values), and

because of this aspect, we have become

aware of the fact that our government, as

well as many citizens, are just plain broke!

Greece is also broke, and Portugal and

Ireland may well be right behind them.

Ditto Spain and maybe Italy too. The

European political system is broken as

well. Moreover, our politicians do not

seem to want to change anything,

especially if it means doing away with

many of their long held privileges, perks,

values, and the status quo!

Furthermore, under the influence of the

the glamour couple in the world for a long

time to come.

What is ahead?

In three years William’s job will change

and he will have a new assignment. The

couple will likely move at that time. In nine

years he will take up residence closer to

London, or in the city itself. It will be a

year of important changes in their lives.

One of the techniques that shows this is

solar arc. In three years the Mars-Jupiter

conjunction in the wedding chart 10th will

trine the North Node. In nine years, Saturn

will oppose the two planets. In three

years, the Ascendant will square the Sun

and in nine years it will trine Mercury of

changes. These aspects all involve the

ascendant (the Prince) the 10th house (his

assignments) and Saturn on the cusp of

the 4th of residence. Saturn also rules the

7th, which is the house of moves. They

also show in the Prince's natal chart.

I don’t think Kate will get pregnant for a

while. In her natal chart Saturn squares

Kate's Cancer moon and such an aspect

can delay pregnancy. It makes me wonder

if they will deliberately wait until William's

assignment changes. Saturn in the

wedding chart also opposes the Aries

planets and squares Pluto, a co-ruler of

the 5th.This will not be a marriage that will

end in divorce. With Saturn in the 4th, it

will last lifelong for both of them. This

marriage will be good for the royal family

and will project a solid, settled quality that

the British certainly deserve.

In any case, there are some lovely

blessings in this chart for them both,

though no one gets all of those things

forever. Dark days will certainly come, but

the two of them will hold fast to each

other and that’s what it’s all about, after

all, isn’t it?

squaring our natal Sun in the 9th house of

foreign affairs at 23° Scorpio 46’ (financial-

banks), people from other countries began

parking their money in our banks, as

theirs do not have FDIC insurance. The

president of France and the financial

minister of Italy cut their vacations short,

and went back home to try and deal with

their uncertain financial situations; while

our politicians left Washington and went

on vacation. This is a good clue that the

U.S. political system is broken as well.

Then on Sunday, August 21, another t-

square manifested that affected the U.S.

chart between the Sun at 28° Leo 29’

conjunct Venus at 29° Leo 59’ in the 7th

house of adversaries and the third quarter

Moon at 28° Taurus 30’ and transiting

Neptune at 29° Aquarius at 4:55 PM EDT.

It was then that there was a turning point

in Libya, as an announcement was made

on T.V. (Aquarius ruled) that the rebels in

Libya had captured Tripoli and were in the

process of liberating it.

The chart for Tripoli is interesting for then

also, as it formed a fixed grand square.

Gaddafi is represented by the Sun in the

4th, and he simply disappeared from his

home, and probably went underground, as

they found many hidden tunnels and

bunkers below his property. Moreover,

transiting Mars (guns) had moved up to

12° Cancer to oppose the U.S. natal Mars

at 12° Capricorn 23’. I am sure we were

helping the rebels, giving them moral

support, equipment and tactical advice.

Guns were going off all over Tripoli, as is

their custom, in celebratory activity.

Muammar Gaddafi was born on June 7,

1942 in Sirt Libya (Time Unknown. Solar

chart drawn for 12 noon on p. 12), and

was raised in a Bedouin tent. Libya’s

society became increasingly Islamic

during Gaddafi’s rule. His purification

laws were put into effect in 1994, punish-

ing theft by cutting off hands, and giving

100 lashes to adulterers. In the Libyan

constitution, homosexual relations are

punishable by up to five years in jail.

It is interesting that Gaddafi’s Neptune is

retrograde at 27° Virgo 5’, which is at the

midpoint of the U.S. natal and progressed

Neptune (oil) at 28° Virgo 43’ and 26° Virgo

46’ in the U.S. 7th house of open enemies.

This goes on to square the U.S. pro-

gressed Mercury (communication) in the FFFFF

U.S. chart at 27° Gemini 22’. He sent

messages to his people saying Keep

on fighting, and kill the rats. Besides

that, his Jupiter (lots of) at 29° Gemini

19’, conjoins the U.S. 5th house

(investments) cusp, and opposes the

11th house cusp at 29° Sagittarius 33’ (the

sign of foreign affairs).

This coincides with the U.S. freezing his

assets, which amount to the tune of $30

billion. Germany, Switzerland, France, and

the Dutch have another $30 billion in

frozen assets, as well. The heavy Neptune

connections worry our officials as he has

page 12

chemical weapons hidden and stockpiled

somewhere. The situation in Syria is

another problem. According to human

rights groups, Syria’s military has killed

over 2,000 civilians since a crackdown on

protesters that began in mid-March. After

repeatedly condemning the violence, the

United States is finally calling for Syrian

dictator Bashar Assad to step down and

stated that he will no longer be invited to

any of the periodic international confer-

ences that are held. The Syrian people,

whom Obama has praised for their

courage in a written statement, want more

freedom, but President Bashar al-Assad is

standing in their way. His calls for

dialogue and reform have rung hollow

while he is imprisoning, torturing, and

slaughtering his own people.

American officials have consistently said

that President Assad must lead a demo-

cratic transition or get out of the way,

which he has not done. For the sake of the

Syrian people, the time has come for

President Assad to step aside. It is up to

the Syrian people to choose their own

leaders however, and we have heard their

strong desire that there not be foreign

intervention in their movement. What the

United States will support is an effort

to bring about a Syria that is democratic,

just, and inclusive for everyone. We will

stand up for the universal rights of the

Syrian people along with others in the

international community.

Assad was born on September 11, 1965

(Time Unknown. Solar chart drawn for 12

noon above in Damascus, Syria.) Al-

though there is no birth time available, it is

interesting that his Jupiter is at 28° Gemini

59’, conjunct the U.S. natal nodes, and

again, making the same kind of t-square

involving the U.S. 5th house cusp as

Gaddafi’s makes. President Obama

announced unprecedented sanctions

against Syria and the Assad regime. He

signed an Executive Order requiring the

immediate freeze of all assets of the

Government of Syria subject to U.S.

jurisdiction and prohibiting U.S. persons

from engaging in any transaction involv-

ing the Government of Syria. It also bans

U.S. imports of Syrian-origin petro-leum or

petroleum products and prohibits U.S.

persons from operating or investing in

Syria. Those actions are expected to be

carried out by other countries also.

On August 25, 2011, Mars moved up to

conjoin the U.S. progressed Sun, at 15°

Cancer 17’ (a water sign of homes) in the

natural 5th house of fun and games on the

25th. Both go on to square transiting

Saturn at 14° Libra in the 8th house of

finances, and life and death issues. Mars

relates to the fury of the hurricane. Saturn

(delays-restrictions) tells us that every-

thing has shut down along its path.

People boarded up their homes and

businesses, closed gambling casinos,

beaches, and tourist areas. Use of the

subways, trains, air traffic, and roads have

subsided as well. Sporting events,

concerts and even Broadway are all dark.

It has forced two nuclear plants to shut

and idled oil ports and refining plant,

which will cause the loss of millions of

dollars in lost revenues. Saturn made its

exact square to the progressed Sun on

September 1, so it could continue to have

a negative impact on business on the East

coast cities until then.

On September 12, there was a full Moon at

19° Pisces 17’, which opposed Assad’s

Sun at 18° Virgo 24’. These signs rule the

natural 6th and 12th houses, so emotions

should be running high, and health,

sorrow, and disappointment might be

prominent for this dictator about then. On

UAC Information

UAC 1989 INITIATED A GREAT

tradition of honoring excellence

in five areas of astrological

endeavor at the conference banquet. At

UAC 1998, in recognition of Marion D.

March's history of outstanding contribu-

tions to the international astrological

community, the Regulus awards were

renamed the Marion D. March Regulus

Awards and the Marion and Nico March

Family Foundation added a $1000 cash

prize for each award recipient.

UAC 2012 in New Orleans will again honor

outstanding astrologers but to do so we

need your input. Current members of any

UAC sponsoring organization may

nominate people for consideration in one

or more award categories.

Anyone other than 2008 Marion D. March

Regulus Award recipients or current

Regulus Committee members may be

nominated. (Committee members: Chair:

Karen McCauley. Committee members:

Agneta Borstein, Monica Dimino, Pat

Geisler, J. Lee Lehman, Maire Masco and

Margaret McMahon. The recipients of

2008 Regulus Awards are listed to the

right.) If someone has already won an

award in a particular category, they can't

be nominated again for the same category.

When you send in your nominations,

please submit only one nomination per

category. An institution, group, or project

may not be nominated--only individuals.

There may be some exceptions if there is a

small group of clearly identified individu-

als working together on a project. Please

consider carefully the award category

descriptions before formulating your

nomination. For a suggested nominee to be

considered, you must provide their contact

data, relevant biographical material, list of

achievements and your reasons for suggest-

ing them for a specific award. All nomina-

tions must be sent to committee chairper-

son, Karen McCauley, 675 SW 126th

Avenue, Beaverton, OR, 97005, or by email

to [email protected].

The deadline for receiving nominations is

October 15, 2011.

Marion D. March Regulus Awards Call for Nominations

professionalism in our field and elevates

the public's perception of astrology and

astrologers. Michael Erlewine, Lois

Rodden, Ray Merriman, Noel Tyl, Nick

Campion, Richard Tarnas at UAC 2008.

Each completed nomination will be

carefully considered by the Regulus

Committee on the merits of the

candidate's work and inclusion in an

appropriate category for recognition. The

top five nominees in each category will

appear on the Marion D. March Regulus

Awards ballot.

In January 2012, the Regulus Committee

will submit a ballot to be voted on by the

membership of the sponsoring organiza-

tions. Those who are members in good

standing will be allotted one vote per

category for each organization in which

their membership is current as of January

1, 2012 per the organization's membership

list.

The five categories and past recipients of

are as follows:

Marion D. March Regulus Award for

Discovery, Innovation and Research

recognizes those who have developed

new tools or concepts to advance the

study and practice of astrology. The

recipient has discovered a further relation-

ship between astrological factors and

phenomena in nature or human activity.

Rob Hand, Jim Lewis, Project Hindsight,

Zipporah Dobyns, Robert Zoller, Michael

Munkasey at UAC 2008.

Marion D. March Regulus Award for

Education recognizes the work of teaching

through the published and spoken word, or

the founding of schools and study pro-

grams. The recipient's work inspires and

guides others to master astrology, and

thereby encourages future generations of

astrologers. Marion March and Joan

McEvers, Zipporah Dobyns, Joan Negus,

Karen Hamaker-Zondag, Joanne

Wickenburg, J. Lee Lehman at UAC 2008.

Marion D. March Regulus Award for

whose work demonstrates the use of

astrology with other disciplines, and

thereby encourages the acceptance of

astrology as a separate philosophical

model or recognized discipline. Liz

Greene, Stephen Arroyo, Michael Lutin,

Donna Cunningham, Demetra George,

Bernadette Brady at UAC 2008.

Marion D. March Regulus Award for

In addition to offering a curriculum to

inspire and educate, UAC 2012 also

features festive and unique entertain-

ment events. Not only will these stellar

soirees—Rock ‘n’ Bowl and Michael

Lutin’s IRREGULUS show—offer you

great opportunities to network with your

fellow astrologers, but they are also a

sure-fire way to have lots of fun and make

your conference experience even more

memorable.

Friday May 25, 2012. Rock ‘n’ Bowl.

On Friday night, we’re going to Rock ‘n’

Bowl the night away. A favorite of New

Orleans locals, the Rock ‘n’ Bowl is a

bowling alley known for its amazing live

entertainment. It’s a notable venue for

first-rate musicians—with such luminaries

as Kermit Ruffins, Dr. John, Gene Delafose,

Nathan and the Zydeco Cha Chas, and

many others playing the Rock ‘n’ Bowl.

Whether you want to bowl, listen to live

music, dance, or mingle in an upbeat and

entertaining environment, Friday night’s

party will certainly provide a striking

opportunity. It’s a not-to-be-missed

gathering, and one that’s really unique to

the Crescent City. As astrologer Lynn Bell

notes, Rock ‘n’ Bowl is quirky and fun,

and quintessentially New Orleans.

From 7:00-9:30 PM, the Rock ‘n’ Bowl will

be all ours. Strike up a game of bowling

with your friends and colleagues on one

of the vintage lanes. Enjoy dinner

featuring an array of party finger foods

plus Cajun entrée classics such as

Chicken & Andouille Jambalaya and

Crawfish Etouffee with Rice. Complimen-

tary beer, wine and non-alcoholic libations

will also be served at this time.

From 9:30 PM through midnight, we’ll

rock the night away as locals will join us

for vibrant and foot-stomping live music.

There will also be a cash bar.

Getting to and from Rock ‘n’ Bowl is easy,

as we’ll have free shuttle buses from 7:00

PM through midnight. And if you want to

stay later, a cab ride is just a call away.

Tickets are $35 ($45 after April 15, 2012)

what will prove to be a highly entertain-

ing and paradigm-shifting time warp of an

evening. The brainchild of Michael Lutin,

IRREGULUS – OMG, The Mayans Were

Right! show will embody all the thought-

provoking humor and envelope-pushing

creativity for which his events are known.

Paying homage to Regulus moving into

Virgo, IRREGULUS celebrates the

sanctity of femininity and artistry, while

also creatively probing aspects of the

Mayan prophecies. IRREGULUS does

this by propelling us through a collective

temporal vortex where we will travel to

and fro, having encounters with a cast of

characters who are certain to entertain

and inspire while also challenging us in

our perceptions. There will be scores of

original music, witty banter, and all the

offbeat spectacles you’ve come to expect

from a Michael Lutin production.

IRREGULUS will be one of those events

whose multi-layered enchantment can

only be described by experiencing it. So

Education News. Developing a List of

NCGR had a list of the books written by

members that included a brief synopsis of

the contents and then a link to the place

where the book could be purchased. A

formidable project, but NCGR already has

completed part of it, since many books are

listed in the Book Nook in the E-News, or

have been reviewed or mentioned in

memberletter, and organization of the

contents of the past few years is ongoing.

However, the membership has written

quite a few books that have not been inc-

luded in the Book Nook. It is time to start

collecting these titles, separate them by

subject matter, and develop a web page

for our members. Therefore I'm asking you

to contact me with a list of books you

Annapolis Chapter. On July 31, 2011,

Lynn Koiner held her annual GREAT-

EST ASTROLOGICAL PICNIC IN THE

KNOWN UNIVERSE, an event that has

occurred for over 30 years. Despite the

summer heat, the 90 year old Tulip Poplar

tree provided cool breezes and three tents

protected attendees from the heat.

Astrologers came from many states along

the East Coast but the picnic is open to all

who have metaphysical interests. Eight

tables were filled with food and the food

was continually replaced as people joined

the picnic all during the day. Lynn finally

closed the door on the picnic at 10:10 PM.

This picnic is known for its excellent

readers who come from West Virginia,

Pennsylvania, Virginia and, this year,

Priscilla Costello came from Canada!

Readers keep all of the money that they

make–this is hard work and it is only fair.

The documentary Corner Plot, a film

about Lynn and her dad, is always

available, and this film had just been

shown in Tajikistan! Charlie is available in

the afternoon to answer gardening

questions. The date of the picnic is

always selected astrologically and the

The Essential Guide to Practical

Astrology, by April Elliott Kent, Alpha

Books, (published by the Penguin Group,

www.penguin.com, 2011. Paper. 405 pp.

$18.95 US/$22.00 CDN.

I’m always on the lookout for good basic

astrology textbooks. Here’s one that

lives up to its title. The author sees

astrology as a roadmap for understanding

yourself and your life and makes it easy

for even newbies to move beyond Sun

Sign astrology to grasp the richness of

our language, and the symbolism inherent

in their own charts and lives.

Part One, subtitled Astrology as a Second

Language begins at the beginning with a

definition of astrology and motivates the

reader to learn more. It also has

information on how to get birth data—and

a chart and explains what an ephemeris is.

Part Two explains the signs, the elements,

and the qualities and offers chapters on

each sign by element.

Part Three explains the houses and house

cusps including the angles. Here there are

chapters for the angular, succedent and

cadent houses contrasting each and

providing information on natural

rulerships and key concepts.

The next section, subtitled Gods and

Monsters takes a look at each planet—

both the good and the ugly—with some

tips on how to keep the good from

becoming the ugly. This section also

discusses asteroids, the Moon’s Nodes,

the Part of Fortune, and the Vertex, along

with aspects ( including semi-sextile, semi-

square, sesquiquadrate, quincunx, parallel,

and contraparallel.

the aspects, but the explanations are

excellent and the author even gives a few

tips on how to spot the major ones. As

for the other points, the Nodes are

discussed in Aries-First House format,

while Chiron, the asteroids, the Vertex,

etc., are discussed with an eye to how to

interpret them, but no cookbook

interpretations are given.

Part Five discusses cycles from pretty

much every imaginable perspective. The

last section then review what has been

covered, gives examples of synthesis, and

finishes up with a brief discussion of

progressions, directions, and transits. The

chart used for the example case study is

Drew Barrymore’s.

There are numerous useful tables,

including listings for eclipses and

retrogrades. Additionally, there is a good

resource list and a thorough index. While

this is not the only book a beginning

student will ever need, it’s one of the best

introductions I’ve seen in a long, long

time, and it should serve the beginner well

for their first year of study and possibly

beyond. It’s clear, easy to use, and fun to

read.

Teachers take note! Highly recommended.

The Nativity of King Charles, by John

Gadbury, The Wessex Astrologer, Ltd., 4a

Woodside Road, Bournemouth BH5 2AZ

England, www.wessexastrologer.com, 2011.

Paper. 99 pp. £10.99 Br.

This is a reproduction of a book written

in 1649, ten years after the death of

King Charles. The good folks at Wessex

Astrologer Ltd. have tried to reproduce

this text in a readable form, but without

too much fiddling with spelling or

terminology except where it was

absolutely necessary to make things clear

and to convert aspect and planetary

glyphs to the appropriate words. Some of

the spellings are therefore quaint, and also

somewhat inconsistent. This is not

surprising, since as noted in the foreword

there was no such thing as a dictionary

when this book was written; nor were the

spellings of words standardized.

Gadbury starts out with the calculation of

the chart, and then moves on to a

judgment/interpretation of each of the

houses, including temperament (sanguine/

choleric), relevant Fixed Stars (Regulus,

among others, and more.) There are

numerous aphorism/truisms in this

section. For example “ ...whoever hath

Mercury ill posited, will never be happy in

servants.” Gadbury in general shows that

all that happened to King Charles was

indeed promised in his natal chart. After

the natal interpretation, Gadbury goes on

to give an astrological account of the last

eleven years in the life of King Charles.

This is based to a large extent on solar

revolutions (or as we now call them, solar

returns).

An appendix then briefly discusses the

horoscopes of a number of the King’s

family, including Queen Mary, Prince

Charles (his first-born son), and James Duke

of York (his second son) and others. It

becomes apparent very early on that dirty

data was as much a problem then as it is

now. Several of these charts have therefore

been rectified and Gadbury takes great pains

to list out the astrological “proofs” to their

accuracy. In addition to analysis of each

of these charts, there is, in some

instances, a look at the synastry between

King Charles and the relative in question.

The writing style is a curious mix of rather

florid verbosity and humility. Gadbury

frequently begs our forgiveness for his

presumptuousness in examining these

charts, then goes ahead and examines them

anyway. The interpretations are to the point

and not without a modicum of sharp

commentary. And overall, the material is

interesting, clear, and to the point—though

those without a bit of background in

traditional astrology may occasionally have

questions about a term or two.

For those of you who do have

background in traditional astrology as

well as a bit of background in English

history, this is a very worthwhile book.

The rest of you might want to have a look

too, but given the cost of this book, you

may want to save your money for

something you find more relevant and

interesting.

to 1° Leo to oppose the U.S. progressed

Pluto, also in the 12th house. On the 24th

and 25th, transiting Mercury came to 27°-

29° Virgo, again setting off the previously

mentioned t-square in the U.S. chart we

have already examined. Since Virgo is a

sign of health, with U.S. Neptune in-

volved, we have to be careful of any

health issues, plus again, any serious

chemical or biological threats.

In October, we have more stressful

aspects involving the U.S. Pluto at 28°

Capricorn 1’. On the 7th, Venus squares it

at 28° Libra, and on the 11th, Mercury

squares it. On the 21st, the Sun squares it

(union troubles, perhaps?). On October 9,

Venus at 1° Scorpio squares the U.S.

progressed Pluto at 1° Aquarius retro-

grade, and on October 13, Mercury moves

to that degree and squares Pluto as well,

and then on October 24, the Sun squares

Pluto. A way to describe what happens

might be The irresistible force meets an

immovable object!

There are a few more stressful days to

CHAOS AND CONFUSION cont’d from p. 12 note. On October 2, transiting Mars at 8°

Leo squares transiting Jupiter at 8° Taurus

(going from direct to retrograde on that

day), and both square natal and

retrograde progressed U.S. Saturn at 8°

Scorpio 16’ and 8° Scorpio 39’ in the U.S.

8th house. On the 27th, Venus conjoins

the U.S. Sun at 23° Scorpio 46’, and both

form t-squares with the U.S. 1st and 7th

house cusps. On October 29, Mars

follows, at 23° Leo in the U.S. 6th house.

With all this going on in October, these

are all indicative of more serious financial

problems being dealt with; both here and

abroad. Stressed Mars might stir up some

issues in the house of the work force, the

public health, the armed forces, civil

service workers, the National Guard, and

the police, as the servants of the country.

On November 7-8, Saturn reaches 23°

Libra 13’ to conjoin the natal U.S. Venus

and opposes the transiting Moon at 23°

Aries from the 8th and 2nd houses.

Money issues abound. Perhaps the

influence of Saturn will allow some

practical, needed cuts in U.S. spending,

and keep tempers from flaring up to

extremes. From the 23°-26° our favorite

U.S. square involving natal and pro-

gressed Neptune square progressed U.S.

Mercury, our North and South Nodes get

triggered by transiting Venus in the U.S.

9th house emphasizing disagreements and

discord concerning foreign affairs.

It sure looks like we will continue to have

chaos, confusion and uncertainty in the

world, so stay resilient, and just try to go

with the flow!

ASTROLOGER ALAN WHITE PASSED

away on Thursday, August 18 in

Edenton, North Carolina after a long

illness. He was 69 years old. He is survived

by his wife, Jaan Stephens-White, and his

three children, Jeanette, Christopher and

Virginia.

A native of Washington, D.C., Alan joined

the Army in 1961 shortly after graduating

from high school, and served in Vietnam

1963-64 as a green beret with the 5th Special

Forces Group. After completing his service

in the military, he spent time focusing on his

education, and held a series of jobs prior to

retiring which included work as a mechanic,

a travelling salesman and an astrologer.

Alan's interest in astrology began in 1963

when he bought a Zodiac watch in Saigon

which depicted the phases of the Moon. In-

itially skeptical about the subject, he began

studying it seriously in the 1970s, eventual-

ly attending his first astrological conference

in the 1980s. Disappointed that many of the

approaches to astrology that he had been

exposed to at that point came off as too

"airy-fairy," he longed for a more concrete

take on the subject. He found what he was

looking for in 1995 when he discovered trad-

itional astrology through Project Hindsight

by attending the second PHASE Conclave

in Berkeley Springs, WV. Alan subsequently

became an ardent supporter and eventually

a close associate of the Project.

He began giving introductory lectures on

Hellenistic astrology in the late 1990s, and

was an active member of the Northern Virgi-

nia Chapter of the NCGR in the early 2000s.

In summarizing his philosophy of astrology,

he was particularly fond of a statement by

the Medieval astrologer Guido Bonatti that

the purpose of astrology is to reconstruct

the past, understand the present, and

predict the future. In May of 2001 he was

sent to Seattle to run a trade show booth for

Project Hindsight at the annual Northwest

Astrological Conference. The first class of

students from the newly opened Kepler

College of Astrological Arts and Sciences

had just completed its first year, and the

entire class was in attendance at the

TransitionsAlan White (1942-2011)

conference. One night at the conference

Alan was sitting in the lounge talking with a

group of Kepler students and regaling them

with stories about Hellenistic astrology, and

they became intrigued enough to encourage

him to put on an impromptu lecture on the

subject in an empty conference room that

same night. The lecture was particularly

successful, to the extent that the Kepler

students encouraged one of their teachers

who had also attended the lecture, Demetra

George, to develop a course on Hellenistic

astrology for the Kepler curriculum.

Demetra subsequently traveled to the east

coast and spent several months studying

under Alan and Robert Schmidt of Project

Hindsight during the winter of 2001 and

2002. She began teaching the course on

Hellenistic astrology at Kepler in 2002, and

many students were first introduced to the

subject within that context. To whatever

extent the subsequent revival of Hellenistic

astrology today and in the future is the

result of Demetra's teachings or those whom

she taught, it is thanks to Alan that this

transmission was able to take place. In many

ways this is his most lasting legacy and

contribution to the astrological community.

Patricia Lee (Pat)

Ranger (1947-2011)

IT IS WITH GREAT SADNESS that the

Northern Illinois chapter of NCGR

reports the passing of Patricia Lee

Ranger (born March 27, 1947), who

passed away on Wednesday, June 8, 2011

at 9:24 a.m. at her home in Waukegan, IL.

Pat was a generous soul and a fine

astrologer who was always happiest when

sharing her knowledge with others. She

donated her time and skills to the astro-

logical community by working in the

registration booth at UAC 2008 in Denver,

and she was invaluable as the registration

coordinator at the ISAR 2009 conference

in Westmont IL. Pat was an Amateur

Astronomer in addition to being a

Certified Astrologer.

Pat was as well known for her distinctive

hearty laugh as she was for her beautiful

wardrobe and elegant fashion sense. In

addition to her astrological studies, she

enjoyed her career as a hair and makeup

artist and Licensed Cosmetologist, as well

as being a Certified Diamondtologist and

Guild Gemologist.

For many years Pat was an Ordained

Minister, spiritual counselor and guide to

hundreds. Her belief was identical to the

Russian writer H.P. Blavatsky’s that

There’s no religion higher than truth.

Pat is survived by her loving husband,

Peter Ranger (married Aug. 23, 1976), her

daughter, Davita, and son, Damon Ranger

and a large and loving extended family.

Her obituary in the Chicago Tribune can

be found at www.legacy.com/guestbook/

Some of you may not know the name

Pat Harsch, but to those of us who

knew her and worked with her, Pat’s

tenacity, “behind-the scenes” organiza-

tional skills, and loving generosity will

always be remembered. This is a personal

remembrance of Pat, who touched my life

in a very special way.

Pat Harsch, a diminutive but feisty and

high-spirited astrologer from West

Chester PA, was active in the NCGR

Philadelphia and Delaware Chapters, as

well as the Philadelphia Astrological

Society (PAS). Pat heard me speak about

Indian Astrology at a conference in the

mid-1990s and asked if I would be

intereseted in teaching in Pennsylvania.

She organized a group of beginning and

intermediate students, and between 1997-

2000, I travelled to the suburbs of Phila-

delphia one Sunday every 4-6 weeks

where I taught in the home of one of the

students.

After our class, Pat, who once owned a

typesetting business, transcribed the

recordings of the all-day workshop,

replete with Sanskrit terminology (that she

would send to me to correct), and sent

them to everyone in the class. These

invaluable transcriptions allowed every-

one to review what they had learned over

the course of the workshop. It also meant

that I had transcripts of three years worth

of classes, which I have used over the

years to refine my teaching. Because we

all formed a bond, even when we shared

personal information about charts, we all

knew that nothing would ever leave the

confines of our workshop.

Had it not been through Pat’s endurance,

organizational skills, and kindness, this

group would never have occurred, and I

know that some of the people in the

group, whom I have heard from since Pat’s

death, felt the same way. When I got

married, Pat even organized a wedding gift

and celebration for me during one Sunday

class that touched me deeply.

I had not been in touch with Pat for quite

some time, so I was grateful that Lois

Patricia Ann (Pat) Harsch (1927-2011)

A Remembrance

Livermore, former president of the NCGR

Delaware Chapter, and a member of our

group, informed our entire group about

Pat’s passing. According to Lois, both

she and Linda Waters Morris, former

president of the Philadelphia Astrological

Society (PAS), “spoke at the funeral on

behalf of Pat's great organizational skills,

her love of astrology and her service to

the greater community. And also how

much she was loved by all the astrologers

that knew her.”

Ronnie Dreyer

The following is taken from the official

obituary.

Patricia Ann Harsch, 84, of West Chester,

PA, passed away on Friday, July 29, 2011,

at her home. In addition to raising her

children, Patricia had her own typography

business, About Faces, and set type for

the magazine of the Pennsylvania Horti-

cultural Society and other local publica-

tions. Under the name About Faces

Publishing Co., she also published several

boutique books. Patricia enjoyed garden-

ing, corresponding with family and friends,

and discussing her deeply held political

convictions. She had a tremendous zest for

life, hosting more than 20 exchange stu-

dents and their families from different

countries and cultures. She also had a deep

appreciation for animals and was often

found with a cat in her lap and dog at her

feet.

Patricia was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of

Randolph Macon Women's College, with a

bachelor's degree in Latin and English.

She went on to be one of the first females

to graduate with a master's degree in

biochemistry from the University of

Pennsylvania. Patricia is survived by her

loving husband of nearly 60 years, Robert

Harsch; daughters, Leslie Altena and her

husband, James Altena, and Merry Harsch

and her partner, Cathy Herman; and her

dear grandson, Johnathan Herman-

Harsch. Memorial contributions may be
