To the BCNY Department of Educational and Career Services’ 12th Annual Independent Boarding School Fair!

Welcome

Antonio AponteDirector of Department of Educational and Career Services

Welcome to the BCNY Department of Educational & Career Services’ 12th Annual Independent Boarding School Fair! As the Director of the Department of Educational & Career Services (DECS), I consider it an honor to be able to provide the youth of our community with the chance to learn more about the wonderful world of independent boarding school through this fair and also provide college and career guidance to all teens of The Boys’ Club of New York (BCNY).

It’s exciting to reflect on what this fair has achieved over the past eleven years, and I look forward to continuing to change young lives. Education is paramount to ensuring that our youth have access to the means necessary to a bright future. With that in mind, I salute you for taking the first step to making sure your child has the best opportunity for success.

For the past fifty-eight years, The Boys’ Club of New York has been at the forefront of independent boarding school placement, and ours is the oldest program in the country to offer these services. Since the program’s inception in 1957, the Department of Educational & Career Services (formerly known as the Department of Educational Services) has helped members obtain the best possible educational opportunities in secondary schools and colleges through BCNY’s Independent School Placement (ISP) and college access programs.

All BCNY members between 7th and 10th grade are welcome to apply to the ISP program. ISP is a highly competitive program, and candidates are chosen through a stringent process involving character and personality evaluations, feedback and references from staff members and teachers, standardized test scores, school transcripts, and interviews. If selected, DECS will manage and submit their applications to leading preparatory schools for admissions and scholarship consideration.

Accepted participants attend a 4-week Summer Prep Program, which provides SSAT test prep, interview skills, panel discussions with BCNY alumni, presentations by school representatives, application completion assistance, and school visits so that members can experience first-hand the culture of an independent boarding school.

In addition to the DECS staff, BCNY also has a Parents Advisory Board, which was established as a support network for parents, providing a forum to discuss various issues pertinent to their sons, such as helping boys adjust to life at boarding school.

At BCNY, it is our objective to be allies with you and your son throughout his academic journey, supporting him through high school, as well as helping him realize his post-secondary ambitions. Whether it is through a post-graduate (PG) year at another leading secondary institution or on to college, DECS and I will be here for you.

Remembering Jeremy Biggs

THREE BCNY MEMBERS SAY THANK YOU

“Jeremy’s sponsorship of Boys’ Club boys at Saint James was not just generous, but inspired . . . As a school, we could not be more grateful, nor more proud. I know that Jeremy himself was very proud both of his boys and of his school, and he always thought of this program as his special tribute to Friederike, who has of course been devoted to the Boys’ Club for many years. It is therefore a wonderful testament to his love for her especially.”The Revd. Dr. D. Stuart Dunnan Headmaster, Saint James School

“An infinite amount of thank yous can’t match the amount of gratitude I have for [Mr. Biggs] and the rest of the Biggs family. His legacy lives on in me and all the other students he has helped so generously.”Erick Fernandez, BCNY member and Biggs Scholarship recipient

“Mr. Biggs was an inspirational mentor and an admirable role model . . . I am so thankful for the blessing he has bestowed upon me, for without his support and guidance, I would not have come as far as I have today.”Gino Rosignano, BCNY member and Biggs Scholarship recipient

“In my eyes, Mr. Biggs was quite the idealist. He believed three kids from Queens could get out there in the big bad world and achieve greatness. He didn’t have to, but his generosity and his fortitude extended past those he knew and for this I am grateful.”Juan Ortiz, BCNY member and Biggs Scholarship recipient

“Mr. Biggs was not only amazingly generous to Saint James as an alumnus, he made Saint James a possibility for a number of young men that have gone on to do great things . . . Mr. Biggs’ boys carry themselves with a special sense of honor and accomplishment.”Benjamin Douglass Director of Admission, Saint James School
