12th International Conference on Molluscan Shellfish Safety
The local and national organizing committees are pleased to welcome you to Ensenada for the 12th International
Conference on Molluscan Shellfish Safety from September 9 to September 13. The conference will be held at
the research center CICESE.
General Information
Venue
The Center of Scientific Research and Higher Education of Ensenada (CICESE) is the largest federal research
center of Mexico. CICESE conducts research in Earth Sciences, Applied Physics, Oceanography, Communications
and Experimental and Applied Biology. CICESE is located in Ensenada City in Baja California, Mexico
THE CITY OF ENSENADA.
Ensenada is a coastal city and it is the third largest in Baja California with a population of approximately 500,000
inhabitants. Ensenada is located in the northwest corner of Mexico, about 100 km to the south of the United
States border. The county of Ensenada is one of the oldest municipalities and the largest in the State of Baja
California; the county prides itself by the quality of its agricultural export products. Tourism, fishing, agriculture
and various industries are the most important economic activities of Ensenada. The port of Ensenada is one of
the most important commercial, fishing and touristic ports of Mexico. The region of Ensenada has the largest
production of cultivated mussels and oysters of Mexico. Clams extraction and Tuna-Ranching are also important
coastal economic activities in the region.
Academic, cultural institutions and research centers converge in Ensenada. CICESE, the Ensenada Campus of the
Autonomous University of Baja California (UABC), and two branches of the National Autonomous University of
Mexico (UNAM): The Institute of Astronomy and the Center of Nanosciences and Nanotechnology are located
in close proximity
Climate
The city of Ensenada has a mild Mediterranean climate. The warmer and driest period is from June to September
with an average temperature of 21 oC and can drop to 17 oC in the evenings.
Travel information
Transport to Ensenada
Ensenada is 113 km from Tijuana International airport that has several domestic flights to Mexico City airport.
Visa requirement: Visitor from few countries requires visa to enter to Mexico

webpage).
Most convenient mode of transportation for international delegates would be to fly to San Diego, California.
This airport is approximately 145 km from Ensenada. USA visa might be required. (see information
https://www.usa.gov/visas#item-213289).
By land: Cars can be rented at the airports. There is a 4-lane toll road (Autopista Escenica) that connects Tijuana to Ensenada. The road is 120 km long and has 3 toll stations, about $40 Mexican pesos (2 US approximately) each. Buses: There are direct buses from/to Ensenada to Tijuana airport that depart every hour during the day. The cost is 330 Mexican pesos (16 US approximately). We will arrange group transportation from San Diego Airport to Ensenada (Saturday September 7th evening and September 8th noon) and back (September 14th). Please try to book your flights accordingly. Ideally, arrive to San Diego either on September 7th before 7 pm or September 8th before noon, and depart from San Diego on September 14th morning or noon. These scheme could be modified. Once you have your flight schedule, please provide it to the organization committee to arrange the logistic of the transportation to Ensenada. We would also arrange transportation from/to the airport of Tijuana to Ensenada. Details of the schedules and
associated costs (if any) will be communicated later. We would also arrange transportation to/from the airport

Currency
One US dollar is approximately 19.5 Mexican pesos. US currency is widely accepted in Ensenada and most places
near the US border. However, in hotels and stores the dollar is taken at lower value than the official parity, so
we advise to exchange your foreign money to local currency. There are several currency exchange places around
the city and ATMs provide Mexican pesos at bank exchange rates.
How to get to CICESE
CICESE is located in the federal highway to Tijuana about 5 km from the center of Ensenada. Transportation will
be provided from Ensenada to CICESE early in the morning and back to Ensenada at the end of daily activities of
the conference. There will be a bus route that will pass through some of the recommended hotels to transport
the participants daily. Also, CICESE could be reached by local transportation, taxis and UBERs. Car parking is
possible close to CICESE (see following maps).
Around CICESE
The conferee will take place at the “Auditorio Intitucional”, poster session and lunch will be located at the “Salon
de usos multiples”. Parking locations are also highlighted in the CICESE’s map. All locations in CICESE are located
at walking distances. See followings maps.

REGISTRATION FEES
Registration fee for full participants will cover: admission to all talks, book of abstracts, icebreaker (welcoming cocktail), coffee breaks, lunches, refreshments and snacks during poster sessions. Also, local transportation from and to CICESE is included.

The deadline for receipt of early registration at the reduced rate is June 30.
Cancellations: A $85 handling fee will be charged for late meeting registration cancellations. Cancellation requests must be sent to [email protected]. Due to food and beverage guarantees given to catering services, no refunds will be issued for cancellations received after August 15
