▼ About TransitionsA transition represents a change from one scene to another. Transitions can help to control the mood and pace of a video production. Using the base version of Media 100, you can create two types of transitions:

• Cuts

• Dissolves

A cut is the simplest and most frequently used type of transition. With a cut, the end of one clip (Out point) is immediately followed by the beginning of the next clip (In point).

A dissolve is where the frames of one clip are uniformly replaced by the frames of another clip.

Media 100’s POWER Option™ and FX Option™ greatly increase the number of transitions you can use.

• The POWER Option FastFX™ provides a series of hardware-assisted accelerated Barn Door, Iris, Wipe, and DVE effects that render at up to six times the real-time rate.

• The FX Option provides an extensive collection of Adobe™ transitional effects, including multiple dissolves, wipes, and digital video effects.

For more information on the types of transitions available with Media 100, see Appendix C, “Gallery of Transition Effects.”

Effect class pop-up menu

The effect class list displayed in the menu identifies the effects appropriate for the chosen class.

Transition duration trimmers

The duration trimmers alter the start or end of the transition clip within the timecode limits defined by the overlap between the two clips. Dragging a respective trimmer left or right extends or shortens the beginning or end of the transition’s duration and alters the current timecode setting of the Length field. The left trimmer effectively repositions the cut arrow. A new cut arrow position is updated when the Program window becomes active.

Video track barsThe video track bars indicate the scaled, relative duration of the In clip and the Out clip. The light green shaded portions of the bars indicate program-playable frames.

Transition duration bar

The transition duration bar indicates the full transition duration beginning at the cut point and proceeding forward in time. The transition duration bar displays as dark green until the effect is rendered, indicating that it is not program playable. After rendering, the bar turns light green.

Timecode fields

Three editable timecode fields, Length, In, and Out, display the current rele-vant timecodes. You can reset the In and Out points or redefine the length of the transition by manually entering the timecodes in the controlling fields.

Previous/Next Transition buttonsThe Previous and Next Transtion buttons allow you to move from transition to transition while remaining in Transition mode of the Edit Suite window.

Transition Settings panel

The Transition Settings panel provides tools to adjust the beginning and end of a transition. You can force a transition effect to begin further into its normal sequence or to finish sooner.

For some transition effects available with the FX Option and POWER Option, the Transition Settings panel enables you to include borders on major edges, specifying the softness, width, and color for the edges.

Note: You must have installed the FX Option and/or POWER Option to be able to include borders.

Directional PinsDirectional pins display for transition effects that originate from the center or within the video subsampler. Clicking any of the pins alters the transition’s directional aspect.

Transition RepresentationWhen you create or select a transition, placing the Edit Suite in Transition mode, the following representation is created in the Edit Suite window:

The interactive trimmers can be adjusted to include more or less of the over-lapped (dark) clip frames in the duration. The left trimmer repositions the location of the cut point. The light areas represent playable frames from the In and Out clips that precede and follow the transition effect.

The rectangular, video frame bars indicate the scaled, relative durations of the In clip (in the example above, this is the bottom clip), the transition dura-tion, and the Out clip.

Transitions and Media SettingsMedia 100 makes it easy for you to conveniently save and store transition effects as they are rendered. Before creating transition effects, select a suitable media destination for the new media source files.

To select media destinations:

1. Select the Media Settings command from the Edit menu or press -M.

The Media Settings dialog box displays.

2. From the pop-up menu in the Effects category, select the image type most applicable to the transition effects you’ll be creating or working with.

3. From the Quality (KB) box in the Effects category, click the radio button for the quality type you want active (Online or Draft).

4. From the Online or Draft pop-up menu, select the quality rate at which the transition effects are to be rendered.

If you have Media 100’s POWER Option™ , select quality rates for both Online and Draft modes.

5. To select a disk drive with sufficient available space, click the intersection of the Fx line with the drive name line. You can also drag the teal indicator ball to the intersection.

Before you render a transition effect, verify that the storage path shown in the Media Settings dialog box points to a high-capacity, high-speed drive. The path initially defaults to the folder where the Media 100 application is installed.

6. Click OK to accept the settings.

▼ Creating and Adjusting a TransitionTo create or adjust a transition, the Edit Suite window must be in Transition mode. The current Edit Suite mode displays in the pop-up menu in the upper left corner of the window.

To create a transition and initiate Transition mode:

1. Open the desired program in Media 100. Expand the V (video) track to reveal the a, b, and fx tracks.

2. Position one video clip in the a track and a second video clip in the b track.

Ensure that the clips overlap. The overlap automatically creates a cut between the two clips, as indicated by a “cut” arrow.

Note: Media 100 will not initiate Transition mode if the clips do not overlap by at least one frame.

Although rendering requires only one overlapped frame, practical consid-erations dictate that overlaps range from a number of frames to a number of seconds, depending on the transition selected and the time interval over which it is to be applied.

3. To initiate Transition mode for a new transition, double-click the cut arrow, select Transition from the Edit Suite window’s mode pop-up menu, or press Option-T.

For an existing transition, double-click an existing transition clip in the fx

track or click once and select Transition from the Edit Suite window’s mode pop-up menu.

The Edit Suite window updates to display a timeline view of the clips in the a, b, and fx tracks.

Once Transition mode is initiated, you can select various transitions types and preview them in the Edit Suite window.

To adjust transitions:

1. Click the applicable Effect Class button for the desired type of transition.

3. Manipulate and adjust the transition as detailed in the following sections of this chapter.

4. Click the Play control in the Edit Suite window to preview the effect. Click Revert to return to the original settings.

5. When you’re satisfied with the effect’s settings, render the transition and apply it in the Program window, or simply apply it to save the selections and settings for future batch rendering.

Note: If any changes are made to a previously created transition, the tran-sition clip must be rerendered.

Adjusting the Beginning and End PointsThe From(%) and To(%) fields in the Transition Settings panel allow you to specify where the transition begins and ends. You can force a transition effect to begin farther into its normal sequence or to finish sooner.

• The From(%) value determines how much of the second video clip displays at the start of the transition.

• The To(%) value determines how much of the first video clip displays at the end of the transition.

For example, a Clock Wipe normally begins and ends at the 12 o’clock posi-tion. Entering a value of 25% in the From(%) field causes the Clock Wipe to begin at the 3 o’clock position instead (3 is 25% of 12). When the transition begins, the area from 12 o’clock to 3 o’clock is immediately filled with the image of the second video clip.

353

Page 10: 13 - fenestrated.net 100 NuBus/UserMan… · About Transitions A transition represents a change from one scene to another. Transitions can help to control the mood and pace of a video

Chapter 13

354

User Manual Book Page 354 Monday, January 22, 1996 2:33 PM

Entering 75% in the To(%) field causes the Clock Wipe to complete itself at the 9 o’clock position (9 is 75% of 12). When the transition ends, the area from 9 o’clock to 12 o’clock is still filled with the image of the first video clip for one frame. The entire image area is then filled with the image of the second video clip.

To adjust the beginning and end point of transitions:

1. To adjust how much of the second video clip’s image displays at the beginning of the transition, enter a numerical value from 1 to 100 in the From(%) field.

2. To adjust how much of the first video clip’s image displays at the end of the transition, enter a numerical value from 1 to 100 in the To(%) field.

3. Click the Play control in the Edit Suite window to preview the effect. Click Revert to return to the original settings.

Entering 50% in both the From(%) and To(%) fields freezes the transition at its middle frame.

These settings can be used to create interesting effects. Experiment with various settings in these fields to learn what interesting effects adjustments can be produced.

Adding a Border to a TransitionBorder fields in the Transition Settings panel allow you to set borders for some transition effects available with Media 100’s FX Option and POWER Option. Border setting fields are dimmed if the selected effect does not have this capability. The border settings specify the softness, width, and color for the border’s edges.

Page 11: 13 - fenestrated.net 100 NuBus/UserMan… · About Transitions A transition represents a change from one scene to another. Transitions can help to control the mood and pace of a video

To add a border to a transition:

1. Enter a numerical value from 1 through 31 or use the slider to adjust the Border Width.

The lower the value, the thinner the border line. The higher the value, the wider the border line.

2. Enter a numerical value from 1 through 15 to adjust the Border Softness.

The lower the value , the sharper the border line. The higher the value, the softer the border line.

The color of the border is indicated in the Color Preview box to the right of the Color button.

3. To change the color of the border, click the Color button.

The Color dialog box displays.

4. Adjust any of the fields or use the color circle and/or slider to change the color. When you’re satisfied with the new color, click OK.

The new color is applied to the border as shown in the Edit Suite window’s subsampler.

Adjusting the Direction of a TransitionSome FX Option and POWER Option transition effects allow you to choose the edge or corner from which the effect originates. The available origination points are shown, in the border surrounding the Edit Suite window video subsampler, as a series of small checkboxes called “directional pins.” For transition effects that originate from the center or within the subsampler, directional pins appear in the appropriate area of the subsampler. Clicking any of the pins alters the effect’s directional aspect.

To adjust the direction or origination point of a transition:

1. Click the appropriate directional pin for the desired effect.

The selected directional pin displays a green color to indicate it is active.

2. Click the Play control in the Edit Suite window to preview the effect. Click Revert to return to the original settings.

Remember, the transition effect starts from the selected directional pin.

Reversing a Transition’s EffectWith Media 100’s FX and POWER Options you can easily reverse the effect of a transition, further saving production time and increasing your creative capabilities. Selecting the Reverse Effect checkbox reverses the direction in which some transitional effects occur, such as a horizontal wipe transition. This transition is set by default, or by orientation selection, to wipe from left to right, but will wipe from right to left when reversed.

Applying a TransitionThe Apply function effectively saves the settings for the current transition by inserting a transition clip in the fx track of the Program window. Frequently clicking the Apply button saves settings as you develop the desired transi-tional effect. This action puts a “temporary” transition clip in the fx track with the current transition settings. Subsequent applies override the setting information in the previous “temporary” clip. Until they are rendered, temporary clips display as black when played in the Program window.

• To apply new settings to a transition, click Apply in the Edit Suite window.

The new settings are applied, and a temporary clip is placed in the Program window.

Rendering a TransitionNew video media is created each time an effect is rendered. You can render individual transition effects as you create them. You can also choose the Render All command from the Tools menu for sequential (batch) rendering of all unrendered transition effects in an active Program window.

• To render a transition, click Render in the Edit Suite window.

You can halt the rendering process by pressing and period (.). Rendering continues until it completes the current frame.

Use Media 100’s batch rendering function for sequential rendering of one or more titles and other effects. For information, see “Rendering Batch Over-lays” in Chapter 15, “Creating Titles and Graphics.”

Note: All Media 100 transitions are field rendered unless otherwise noted.

Copying Transition EffectsYou can copy a rendered transition effect and paste it elsewhere in the same or a different Program window.

To copy a transition effect:

1. Click the first clip of the transition (this is the In clip).

2. While holding down the Shift key, click the second clip of the transition (this is the Out clip).

Note: Do not click the transition effect.

3. Select the Copy command from the Edit menu or press -C.

4. Move the CTI to the approximate position in the Program window where the copied transition is to be placed. Select the Paste command from the Edit menu or press -V.

The transition appears in the fx track, while the associated video clips appear in the a and b tracks.

Note: When copying a transitions that has been modified in a third-party application, ensure that the transition is rendered with the upper field dominant.

Deleting Transition EffectsYou can delete existing transitions from your program. You can also elect to delete both transition effects and their corresponding media.

To delete an existing transition from a program:

1. In the fx track of the Program window, click the desired transition clip to select it.

2. Press the Delete key or select Clear-Remove from the Edit menu.

The transition clip is deleted and disappears from the Program window.

361

Chapter 13

362

User Manual Book Page 362 Monday, January 22, 1996 2:33 PM

Note: Deleting a transition clip does not delete the source material produced when the transition clip was rendered. This material remains on disk until it is deleted.

To delete both the transition clip and media file:

1. In the fx track of the Program window, click the desired transition clip to select it.

2. Press Option-Delete or select the Delete Clip and Media command from the Edit menu.

The transition clip and its media file are deleted.

Importing Transitions to BinsA rendered transition cannot be dragged from the Program window into a bin like a regular video clip. However, the media file created when a transi-tion is rendered can be imported into a bin and saved just like any other source video. This functionality is useful when you’ve created a complicated transition that may be used multiple times.

To import a transition to a bin:

1. Select or open the bin into which you want to import the transition.

2. Select Import from the File menu or press -I.

Media 100 displays a standard directory dialog box.

Page 19: 13 - fenestrated.net 100 NuBus/UserMan… · About Transitions A transition represents a change from one scene to another. Transitions can help to control the mood and pace of a video

Creating Transitions

User Manual Book Page 363 Monday, January 22, 1996 2:33 PM

3. Navigate to the disk drive and folder where your media files are stored.

Media 100 assigns file names based on an algorithm. In general, the media file name is a combination of the two clips’ names and the type of transi-tion (dissolve, wipe, etc.). Because these names tend to be excessively long, Media 100 truncates them, adding a numerical designation at the end. As an example, several transitions could be named “clipone/cliptwo-1, clipone/cliptwo-2, clipone/cliptwo-3...”.

4. Select the appropriate media file and click Import.

Media 100 imports the media file into the bin, where it can be saved and utilized repeatedly.

▼ Creating a Title in Transition ModeThe FX Option allows you to use PICT images with text as static or animated titles. A static title is stationary and does not move, while an animated title uses a motion path to move across the screen. When a PICT image is used, it may include either an alpha channel for anti-aliased masking or a color-keyed background.

The rendering process produces new media that must be stored on a high-capacity, high-performance disk drive. Ensure that you have designated an adequate destination drive in the Media Settings dialog box.

The following steps apply to both static and animated titles unless otherwise indicated.

To create a title:

1. Open the desired program in Media 100. Expand the V (video) track to reveal the a, b, and fx tracks.

2. Position the CTI in a gap between two video clips and select the Add Black Clip command from the Program menu or press -B.

Media 100 creates a black clip with a duration of 2 seconds.

3. Use the mouse to position the black clip in the a or b (video) track oppo-site the video clip over which you want the title to appear.

If necessary, drag-trim the outer end of the black clip to increase or decrease its length. The length, or duration, of the black clip is displayed directly on it.

For convenient access, you may find it easier to create and save a black clip in a bin, rather than creating a new one each time. You can then adjust its length as needed.

Cut arrows should appear at the beginning and end of the black clip when you place it in the track. If they do not, place the arrow cursor in the fx track, between the beginning and end points of the black clip. Drag forward past the end of the black clip to add cut arrows at the beginning and end of the duration. These arrows can be dragged to other positions, if necessary. To delete cut arrows, drag them one at a time from the video track to the audio track.

4. To enter Transition mode in the Edit Suite window, double-click the first cut arrow of the black clip.

The Edit Suite window switches to Transition mode.

5. Click the Digital Video Effects icon.

6. Select either the Static Title or Animated Title option from the effect class pop-up menu.

A directory dialog box displays.

7. Navigate to the correct drive and folder to locate the desired PICT file.

• Click the Show Preview checkbox to view “thumb-nails” of the highlighted file.

• For an alpha-channel title, click the Use Alpha Channel radio button and the Key Over Video checkbox.

• For a color-keyed title, click the Key Over Video checkbox and select the appropriate color button associated with the background. Options include Red, Green, Blue, Black, or White. Look at the previewed image in the dialog box to determine the appropriate color.

If the Key Over Video checkbox is not selected, the entire PICT image is superimposed over video, rather than just the masked selection. This may be desirable when positioning an alpha-channel title before rendering. However, you must return to the directory dialog box to select the Key Over Video option before rendering is started.

8. When all settings are correct and the desired PICT file is located, click the Use PICT button.

Note: Once a PICT image is selected, that image is permanently associ-ated with the video frames in the transition until a new image is selected and rendered.

Adjusting a Transition TitleAfter the image is selected, you can set various parameters for the title effect. While in the Transition mode of the Edit Suite window, you can:

• Place the image over the video frames

• Adjust the duration of the effect

• Adjust the direction of an animated title

• Adjust the fade in/out appearance of the effect

To adjust a transition title:

1. If the Edit Suite window subsampler displays black, click the underlying video clip to view the keyframe.

The Edit Suite window subsampler displays a white rounded-corner box marking the Safe Title Area. For more information, see “The Safe Title Area” in Chapter 15, “Creating Titles and Graphics.”

Note: An alpha-channel title does not become visible until the title is rendered.

Additionally, a green indicator pin denotes the left corner of the PICT image.

2. Drag the indicator pin to position the PICT image in the desired location.

3. Adjust the length of the title using the interactive trimmers in the transi-tion timeline. Use the trimmers to adjust the In point and Out point.

For an animated title, adjust the duration to allow for a typical reading time of 2–3 seconds per frame in a crawling title plus one frame for bringing the PICT from off screen. For a scrolling PICT, adjust the dura-tion to allow for a typical reading time of 1–2 seconds per frame.

4. To choose the direction for an animated title — crawl or scroll — click either pin of the horizontal or vertical indicator pin set.

Click the right or left indicator for a crawl; click the top or bottom indi-cator for a scroll.

• For a crawling title, position the green indicator pin in the image anywhere along the horizontal line along which you want the text to crawl.

• For a scrolling title, position the green indicator pin to mark the left edge of the scroll.

PICTs with alpha-channel masks are not visible until rendering begins; therefore, the green indicator pin is very important for positioning the PICT over the video. Color-keyed PICTs, however, are viewable before and during rendering.
