13 Most Anticipated Top Hollywood
Movies Of 2015
We are done with 2014 and as we step into the new year 2015, we take a look at the most
exciting and anticipated Hollywood movies to be released in the year 2015. Hollywood bets
big in 2015 with some of the biggest names in the industry having their movies slated to be
released this year. From Leonardo DiCaprio to Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino to
Tom Hanks, it surely is going to be an exciting year for the fans. Curated by Viral Ariv.
13. AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON
Director: Joss Whedon
Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johanson, Jeremy Reener
Synopsis: When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go
awry and it is up to the Avengers to stop the villainous Ultron from enacting his terrible
plans.
Expectations: Really ? Do I need to mention why ? Thankfully, the trailer looks great, which
raises the expectations a notch up — if it already wasn’t sky-high
12. BY THE SEA
Director: Angelina Jolie
Starring: Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Mélanie Laurent
Synopsis: Set in France during the mid-1970s, Vanessa, a former dancer, and her husband
Roland, an American writer, travel the country together. They seem to be growing apart,
but when they linger in one quiet, seaside town they begin to draw close to some of its
more vibrant inhabitants, such as a local bar/café-keeper and a hotel owner.
Expectations: Angelina Jolie has now directed two films, and though, neither of them have
been particularly great, they do show Jolie’s directing potential. This movie of hers is high
on the anticipation list because for the first time she is going to work with her husband Brad
Pitt and the hope is with all the learnings she has gained over her two directorial efforts,
she could apply in this to give us something truly memorable.
11. JOY
Director: David O. Russell
Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro
Synopsis: A story based on the life of a struggling Long Island single mom who became
one of the country’s most successful entrepreneurs.
Expectations: If there is one director who every single actor must be wanting to work with,
it has to be David O Russell. Twice in a row, four of his actors have been nominated for the
Oscar. So, expect some major Oscar attention on Lawrence and Cooper again, especially,
considering ‘Joy’ is more on the lines of a biopic — though, I am sure Russell will have an
interesting take on the subject.
10. THE MARTIAN
Director: Ridley Scott
Starring: Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kate Mara
Synopsis: An astronaut, stranded on Mars, struggles to survive.
Expectations: Ridley Scott hasn’t been doing great work for past few years, but then, he is
the same Ridley Scott who has directed some exceptional sci-fi films like ‘Bladerunner’ and
‘Alien’. So, we have not lost faith on him yet. And with the kind of talent involved, and with
an interesting sounding story, this one is worth waiting for. Releases Nov 25th.
9. BLACK MASS
Director: Scott Cooper
Starring: Benedict Cumberbatch, Johnny Depp, Joel Edgerton
Synopsis: The true story of Whitey Bulger, the brother of a state senator and the most
infamous violent criminal in the history of South Boston, who became an FBI informant to
take down a Mafia family invading his turf.
Expectations: Story of Whitey Bulger with some major talents in the form of Depp (see if
you can recognize him in the above picture) and Cumberbatch involved automatically
makes ‘Black Mass’ a very interesting prospect. Scott Cooper last directed ‘Out of
Furnance’, which clearly showed that he has the potential to break-through in a big way.
Could it be with this film ?
8. St JAMES PLACE
Director: Steven Spielberg
Starring: Tom Hanks, Amy Ryan, Billy Magnussen
Synopsis: An American lawyer is recruited by the CIA during the Cold War to help rescue a
pilot detained in the Soviet Union.
Expectations: A very interesting sounding plot with Steven Spielberg at the helm. It’s
been long since we have seen a good spy-thriller and this one has the potential to become
one.
7. DEMOLITION
Director: Jean-Marc Vallée
Starring: Naomi Watts, Jake Gyllenhaal, Chris Cooper
Synopsis: An investment banker struggling to understand his emotional disconnect after
the tragic death of his wife begins to tear apart his life in an effort to see where he went
wrong, but is ultimately rescued by a woman he meets in a chance encounter.
Expectations: Jean-Marc Vallée has been on fire off-late after directing ‘Dallas Buyers
Club’ and ‘Wild’, former of which led its actors to Oscar wins, while the latter in all certainty
will get a nomination for Reese Witherspoon. Whether, ‘Demolition’ attracts similar Oscar
attention towards Watts and Gyllenhaal will be interesting to see. By the way, if you
haven’t noticed, just like Jake, Naomi Watts is going to have a stunning 2015.
6. THE HATEFUL EIGHT
Director: Quentin Tarantino
Starring: Channing Tatum, Walton Goggins, Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Dern
Synopsis: In post-Civil War Wyoming, bounty hunters try to find shelter during a blizzard
but get involved in a plot of betrayal and deception.
Expectations: Any project from Tarantino is bound to generate enthusiasm. After ‘Django
Unchained’ he has decided to sunk his teeth on another western, so, it will be interesting to
see if he can give us something entirely new or will it be on the lines similar to Django.
5. SILENCE
Director: Martin Scorsese
Starring: Liam Neeson, Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver
Synopsis: In the seventeenth century, two Jesuit priests face violence and persecution
when they travel to Japan to locate their mentor and to spread the gospel of Christianity.
Expectations: Martin Scorsese is one of the greatest directors to have walked this planet.
So, his follow up of ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ automatically becomes something to look
forward to. Also, it will be a change of pace for Liam Neeson, who has been busy collecting
fat pay-checks off-late.
4. KNIGHT OF CUPS
Director: Terrence Malick
Starring: Christian Bale, Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett, Freida Pinto, Isabelle Lucas
Synopsis: A story of a man caught in the temptations, celebrityhood, and excesses of
Hollywood.
Expectations: There are very few filmmakers who you can identify just by looking at a
single frame of their films. Terrence Malick is one of them with a visual style that is not only
unique but extremely beautiful. It’s not just his visuals, but also the way he tells his stories
in a dream-like fashion that just pulls you into his world. Therefore, it is no surprise that
‘The Tree of Life’ happens to be one of the greatest films of last decade or so.
3. STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS
Director: J.J.Abrams
Starring: Harrison Ford, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Adam
Driver
Synopsis: A continuation of the saga created by George Lucas set thirty years after Star
Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi.
Expectations: Well, what can I say ? It’s Star Wars after all. With J.J.Abrams at the helm,
the hope is he will be able to re-energize this sagging franchise.
2. THE SEA OF TREES
Director: Gus Van Sant
Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Naomi Watts, Ken Watanabe
Synopsis: Arthur Brennan treks into Aokigahara, known as The Sea of Trees, a mysterious
dense forest at the base of Japan’s Mount Fuji where people go to contemplate life and
death. Having found the perfect place to die, he encounters Takumi Nakamura, a Japanese
man who has also lost his way. The two men begin a journey of reflection and survival.
Expectations: Gus Van Sant (director of ‘Good Will Hunting’ and ‘Milk’) is one the great
modern directors and this time he is working on an excellent “black list” script, and
therefore, results are bound to be great. On top of it, this will be a follow-up to ‘Interstellar’
for the star of the moment, Matthew McConaughey.
1. THE REVENANT
Director: Alejandro González Iñárritu
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy
Synopsis: A man of many adventures, Hugh Glass goes West in 1822 in the employ of
Captain Andrew Henry to do some profitable fur trapping. He is attacked by a bear, and
badly injured. Miraculously, he survives, but the terrain makes it impossible to carry him
back. Henry tries, but eventually hires two mercenaries to simply stand watch and bury
him. They abandon Glass, alone and defenseless, but unfortunately for them, he recovers.
He resolves to hunt down the men who abandoned him.
Expectations: Iñárritu has become talk of the town after directing ‘Birdman’ and it comes
as no surprise that everyone is looking up to his next project ‘The Revenant’. We already
know Leonardo Di Caprio is very choosy with his projects and the fact that he postponed
his sabbatical because of this film tells a lot about the special movie that this is. The plot,
too, sounds damn interesting.
