Water and Wastewater Services portfolio councillor Deirdre Comerford said major population increases in the Mirani and Marian townships has resulted in the need for upgrades to the plant. “Increased treatment capacity, additional chemical dosing facilities, as well as improvements to the controls and discharge arrangements will allow for additional flows to enter the plant.” “Capacity related works will be given priority and all improvements will be brought on line progressively to maximise the benefit to the community,” Cr Comerford said. The works are expected to be complete and fully operational by December 2012. All structures need approval The Mackay region is designated as a Wind Region C under the provisions of the Building Regulation 2006 and as such all structures are required to have a building approval – no matter the size. This includes such structures as farm sheds, re- roofing of dwellings, patios, garden sheds, carports and the like. Swimming pools and spas are also required to have a building approval - including spas that contain a lockable lid. Planning and Development portfolio councillor Diane Hatfield said all building work is also required to be inspected at various stages by a Private Certifier. “It is essential that owners ensure that a final inspection has been carried out on all building work and that the necessary final inspection certificates have been issued,” Cr Hatfield said. Recent heavy rainfall in the region could mean your home is a breeding ground for dengue mosquitoes. Dengue mosquitoes breed in containers that hold water including buckets, old tyres, bases of pot plants, boats, fallen palm fronds, blocked roof guttering and bird baths to name a few. Dengue is a disease that is transmitted by certain types of mosquitoes which are commonly found in tropical areas. Did you know? Last month, council workers mowed over 184,000m2 of Parks, 237,000m2 of road reserves and spent 150 hours whipper snipping the Pioneer Valley area. Early ratepayer winners drawn... Councillors will visit the Mirani Customer Service Centres fortnightly to discuss general matters and to keep abreast of the community’s needs in this area.
