    FADE IN

    EXT. MILLS POND, GEORGIA-SPRING 1935

    EXT. MAIN STREET-DAY

Hustle and bustle of a small Southern town on a beautifulSaturday morning.

SAVANNAH (V.O.)From a young age I had alwaysconsidered Mill's Pond my ownprivate fiefdom. Undoubtedly thiswas due to the fact that my familyat one time had the distinction ofbeing the wealthiest landowners inall of Bascomb County. This beliefalso led me to conclude that myfamily, and by consequence our

small community, was immune to theslings and arrows of the outsideworld...I was wrong.

    EXT. RAMBLING OLD MANSION-DAY

    Stately columned home.

    INT. PRICE HOUSE/KITCHEN-DAY

SELMA BROPHIE, black, housekeeper and woman of the house, stands by the stove, flipping eggs with the dexterity of ashort order cook.

REYNOLDS PRICE, attorney and widower, walks in, briefcase inhand. He may look like a good old Southern boy, but he's aman of great depth, emotion and intellect.

SELMAI made you eggs, Mr. Reynolds.Sunny side up, just the way youlike it. The bacon will be alongshortly. Ill get you coffee.

REYNOLDSIm afraid I shall have to pass,Selma. I have a meeting thismorning with Byron Lee.

SELMAThat robber baron? Surely you gottime for one cup.

    Reynolds hesitates.

    REYNOLDSOne cup.

Selma grins to herself as Reynolds sits.

    INT. BEDROOM-SAME TIME

SAVANNAH PRICE, 10, precocious tomboy, puts on a shirt andoveralls.

    Selma enters and frowns.

SELMAHold on, Miss Savannah. Did youwash between them ears?

SAVANNAHIts Saturday. How come I stillhave to wash?

SELMAIts Saturday. How come I stillhave to cook?

Savannah exits as Selma makes Savannahs bed.

SELMA (CONT.)When I was your age, by this timeId milked the cows, fed thechickens, baked two apple pies andthree loaves of bread.

Savannah runs in, grabs a sweater and attempts to bypassSelma, but the older woman grabs her by the overalls.

SELMA (CONT.)You aint stepping foot outsidethis house until I fix your hair.

Selma takes a brush from the bureau and begins brisklybrushing Savannahs long tresses.

    SAVANNAHNot so hard. That hurt.

SELMAIf you dont stop squirming Imgonna have Booker use you forcrawfish bait.

    Selma starts braiding.

SAVANNAHI wish Daddy would let me cut myhair. It dont do me no good.

SELMABite your tongue. In this life your

    beauty is your calling card.

    SAVANNAHDaddy says its brains.

SELMAYour Daddy might be the smartestman in Bascomb County but he sureis the ugliest.

SAVANNAHSelma, do you think Daddy will everget married again?

SELMAHe better. This old house is cryingout for babies. That would knockyou down a peg or two. We need newblood.

SAVANNAHI thought you said he needed awife.

SELMAMr. Reynolds is what the ladies

call an eligible gentleman of acertain age.

SAVANNAHYou just said he was ugly.

SELMABeing ugly has nothing to do withbeing eligible. Your Daddy hascharacter.

SAVANNAHWhat kind of woman do you thinkDaddy should marry?

SELMAShes got to be pretty like yourlate Momma. Smart too. With widehips.

    SAVANNAHMary Ellen Pincher?

    SAVANNAHHow about Millicent Hawthorn?

SELMAI said smart. Miss Hawthorn canteven spell her own name.

    SAVANNAHCharlotte Atwill?

Selma SIGHS. Savannah takes this to mean that Charlotte is aserious contender.

SELMAMiss Atwill comes from good stockand shes gonna come into a heap ofmoney when her Daddy kicks thebucket.

    SAVANNAHDaddy doesnt care about money.

SELMASince when? What do you think keepsthis house going and your bellyfrom growling?

    Savannah stares into the mirror.

SAVANNAHAm I beautiful like my Momma?

SELMAGracious no. You take after yourDaddy, all legs and bones.

SAVANNAHGood. I dont want to be a girl. Iwant to be a boy.

    Selma LAUGHS.

SELMAChild, one day youll be thankfulyoure not, maybe sooner than youthink. What about Master WillArthur? He walked you home just theother day.

SELMAEven frogs turn into princes.There. At least now you lookpresentable.

    SAVANNAHShow me Mommas ring. Please?

SELMAI don't have time for suchnonsense. I still have to do thewash before we go to town----oh,all right.

Selma exits; Savannah flops down on the bed.

Selma returns holding a small black box, which she hands toSavannah. Savannah opens the box and admires an emerald anddiamond ring.

    SAVANNAHIts so shiny.

    SELMALooks like glass to me.

SAVANNAHDaddy says this ring is going to bemine one day.

SELMAWhen you get married just like yourMomma and her Momma before her.

SAVANNAHDaddy ought to save himself thetrouble and give it to me now.

Selma takes the box and snaps it shut.

SELMAYoure too uppity for your owngood, Miss Savannah. One of thesedays that smart mouth of yours isgoing to land you in hot water. Nowlet me do my work in peace.

Savannah runs out of the room and down the stairs.

SAVANNAH (V.O.)I had no idea just how prescientSelmas words would turn out to be.

    INT. PICK UP TRUCK-DAY

Selma dressed in her Sunday best; she sits beside herhusband, the stately BOOKER, the Price households handyman,as he drives. His shirt is buttoned to the neck, even thoughit's mild. He has an air of melancholy, even when he smiles, which is often.

Savannah sits in the open cab.

SAVANNAH (V.O.)I had never heard Booker Brophieutter a single word and I knew ofno one who had. It was rumored thatBooker had suffered a grievous

injury to his vocal cords, thenature of which remained unclearand which was the subject of muchwild and devilish speculationamongst us young folk.

    EXT. MAIN STREET-DAY

The truck pulls along a row of stores.

    INT. PICK-UP TRUCK-DAY

Savannah stands by the car as Selma hands her some change.

SELMAWell pick you up at the grainstore at three oclock. And I dontwant you lolly gagging around withthat trash Aaron Thibodeux.

    LEEIts a fair offer.

REYNOLDSMr. Lee, its exceedingly fair, even generous. But my answerremains the same.

LEEWhy? Everyone knows youve nointention of developing the landother than what you allow yournigra to do. Sixty fertile acres

    lying fallow. Its a crime.

REYNOLDSI feel an obligation to myancestors to preserve what littleland I have left. Now if ourbusiness has concluded----
