LEARNING OUTCOME TARGET AUDIENCE REGISTRATION INFORMATION

PROGRAM SCHEDULE8–8:15 a.m. Welcome

8:15–9:45 a.m. Nurses are from Saturn, Physicians are from Jupiter, Healthcare Administrators are from Mars

The background and training of nurses, physicians and healthcare administrators are quite different, and it often seems like we come from different planets and speak different dialects.

Clinical quality, patient safety and physician, staff and patient satisfaction depend on optimizing communication and on successful teamwork. Learn specific methods to build and maintain teamwork between all members of the healthcare team.

Jay Kaplan, MD, FACEP

9:45–10:15 a.m. Refreshments and Oasis

10:15 a.m.–Noon Service and Quality, People and Process—How to Make Your Department a Great Place

Most efforts at performance improvement in healthcare focus on either improving operations (systems issues) or improving behavior (people issues). Without doing both at the same time, many efforts fail to sustain the desired results. This session will focus on what it takes to create a great place for staff to work, physicians to practice medicine and patients to come for care.

Jay Kaplan, MD, FACEP

Noon–1 p.m. Luncheon

1–2 p.m. Nurse Communication—How to Create Powerful and Effective Patient-Centered Care

Nurse communication affects most of the HCAHPS composites. This presentation will assist you with tools and tactics to improve communication, as well as address some communication challenges that all nurses face. Learn tips on how to improve these results through listening, explaining and using nine factors of engagement. Other topics discussed will be key words, effective use of communication boards, rounding and validation.

Karen Cook, RN

2–2:15 p.m. Refreshments and Oasis

2:15–3:45 p.m. HCAHPS Care Transition Measures—Impact and Implications

How hospitals score on HCAHPS will affect the calculations for value-based purchasing reimbursement, provide more visibility into the discharge process and highlight problems that lead to avoidable readmissions. This session will provide tools and tactics to help address these areas and improve results.

Karen Cook, RN

3:45–4 p.m. Closing and Evaluation
