SCHOOL PHOTO DAY—Monday 20th May
School photo envelopes went home last week. School Photo day is
Monday 20th May. Envelopes are to be sent in with payments prior to the
day. Sibling photo envelopes are available at the office. Payments can be
made online via the MSP Photography website (not the school webpage).
STEWART HOUSE ENVELOPES—Return by Friday
Stewart House envelopes are being sent home today. The donations
received support the 1700 students from NSW Public Schools who visit
Stewart House each year. By placing a small amount (minimum $2) in the
envelope and returning it to school, you go into the prize draw to win a
$4000 holiday to a destination of choice. Please return envelopes by this
Friday 17th May, this will allow the envelopes to be forwarded in time.
STEWART HOUSE GOLD AWARD
On Friday 10th May our school leaders, accompanied
by Miss Lennard, visited Stewart House to receive our
very first Gold Award. The awards are pro-rata for the
amount the school (and staff) donated to Stewart
House in 2018. We were very excited to receive the
award. The leaders also had a very informative tour of
Stewart House and have a new understanding of how
Stewart House helps.
SMALL SCHOOLS ATHLETICS—FRIDAY 24TH MAY
The Small Schools Athletics carnival will be held on Friday 24th May at
Turner Park (adjacent to Cessnock High School). The 8 years and over
group will be at the main park, the K-2 (under 8 years) will be on the
soccer fields to the lower end of the park. We have been requested to ask
some parents (about 3-4) to do canteen duty between 1.30pm to 2.30pm.
The money raised by the canteen goes towards helping small schools
sports teams (jerseys etc). We would ask that some of our wonderful
parents offer their assistance. (Permission notes are being sent home
today)
AUSTRALIAN SPORTING SCHOOLS
We were once again fortunate to receive this grant from Australian
Sporting Schools which will feature 5 weeks of basketball coaching by a
Basketball NSW coach.

YEAR 3/4 - This week in 3/4 we have welcomed Miss Denise Smit into our classroom. Miss Smit is in her final year of
University at Avondale College, and will be teaching alongside Mr Hemsworth until the end of week 7.
We have also looked at fractions - students have collected lots of objects from around the classroom and playground, such as fruit from the orchard or different coloured textas, and determined the fraction of each group. 3/4 has begun our new unit of work on identity, which has included finding out the history of our names, creating acrostic poems and assessing how we react to different situations. Below are some acrostic poems that we have created about ourselves.
K-1,2 has settled back into the school routine and everyone is looking forward to another exciting term of learning. One of
the units of work we will be covering is “identity”. Students will be learning how their likes and aspirations help form there
individual identity. As part of this unit of work the students will be learning how and who to ask for help. Students will also be
presenting and talking to the class about something that is important to them. Further information regarding the presenta-
tion will be sent home this week.
The students were very excited when the Mulbring Fire Brigade visited the school to talk about fire safety. A big thank you
for Campbell and Chris for taking the time to talk with the students.
This term we have also started to use a new spelling program in the school “Sound Waves”. The program supports a syn-thetic phonics approach with engaging interactive learning activities. The students are enjoying the learning experience and are being empowered with the skills and strategies to become better spellers and readers
Year 5/6— Stage 3 have enjoyed a positive start to Term 2 with the holidays now a distant but fond memory. We have been
working on including a range of literary devices into our writing such as ‘alliteration’ and the influence these can have on your audience.
The focus from our MAPPEN unit for Year 5 & 6 this term will be on Ethics and Emotions. Students will consider ethical dilemmas as they learn about the values of honesty, respect and loyalty. They will also understand and prepare for the social and emotion-al changes that they will experience including building a repertoire of strategies that support their sense of self-worth and self-being. Good luck to all Year 3 & 5 students that will be participating in NAPLAN tests during week 3, with all your hard work and preparation we are confident you will succeed in doing your best.
