God as Victim
GK Chesterton wrote the following words almost seventy years
ago. One of the things that, for him, gave the Church credibility
is the fact that, invariably, it is surrounded by a halo of hatred!
And there shone on them in that dark hour a light that has
never darkened; a white fire clinging to that group like an
unearthly phosphorescence, blazing its track through the
twilights of history and confounding every effort to confound
it with the mists of mythology and theory; that shaft of light or
lightening by which the world itself has struck and isolated
and crowned it; by which its own enemies have made it more
illustrious and its own critics have made it more inexplicable;
the halo of hatred around the Church of God.
(The Everlasting Man, Hodder & Stoughton, 1939, p. 188)
I quote his words not as an attempt to offer an apologia for the
church today as it suffers through a period within which it is
frequently an object of intense hatred or indifference.
Defensiveness is not my purpose here since I am one of those
persons who is not entirely sorry that a lot of anger is currently
being directed towards us in the church. Some of this anger is
justified, after a few centuries of privilege, and all of it will, I
submit, be helpful in fuelling an important period of purification
within the church. I would rather be a priest in a time of anti-
clericalism than in a time within which priests and church are
unduly privileged since it is far easier to live the gospel in the
former situation. Thus, we, inside the church, should have a
curious gratitude for all the anger that is being directed against
us today. Besides, as Chesterton points out, paraphrasing Jesus,
the church will always be hated.

Cito sus palabras no como un intento de ofrecer una apología

El punto aquí no es defender a la iglesia, sino hacer un punto
crítico sobre Dios y la teología de Dios, una teología que a
menudo es muy mal entendida.
El punto es este: el cristianismo es la única religión que adora al
chivo expiatorio, el que es odiado, excluido, escupido, culpado
de todo, ridiculizado, avergonzado y prescindible. El
cristianismo es la única religión que se enfoca en imitar a la
víctima y quien ve a Dios en el que está rodeado por una
aureola de odio.
Hay algunas lecciones importantes que se pueden aprender de
esto, entre las cuales se encuentra la de ver la verdad, la bondad
y a Dios. Necesitamos, hoy, algunos correctivos ya que vivimos
en una cultura que, a diferencia de la mayoría de las culturas en
el pasado, hace de chivos expiatorios a algunas personas en
beneficio de los demás y luego identifica a Dios y a la santidad
con aquellos que han creado los chivos expiatorios.
Dios no debe ser confundido con los mitos del éxito, el poder, el
glamour y la popularidad. Nunca confunda a Dios, o lo que es
santo, con la religión cultural actual, que, antitética a Cristo,
adora a los incluidos, los glamorosos, los que no se avergüenzan
ni se ridiculizan, y los que parecen importantes e

siendo ridiculizado, y muriendo en el que está siendo ejecutado.
El verdadero cristianismo lo sabe. Adoran al chivo expiatorio,
al que está rodeado por una aureola del odio.

The point here is not to defend the church, but to make a
critical point about God and the theology of God—a theology
which is often grossly misunderstood.
The point is this: Christianity is the only religion which
worships the scapegoat, the one who is hated, excluded, spat
upon, blamed for everything, ridiculed, shamed, and made
expendable. Christianity is the only religion that focuses on
imitating the victim and which sees God in the one who is
surrounded by the halo of hatred.
There are some important lessons to be learned from this, not
the least of which has to do with where we see truth, goodness,
and God. We need, today, some correctives since we live in a
culture which, not unlike most cultures in the past, scapegoats
some persons to the benefit of the others and then identifies
God and holiness with those who have created the scapegoats.
God is not to be confusedly identified with the myths of
success, power, glamor, and popularity. Never confuse God—
or what is holy—with current cultural religion, which,
antithetical to Christ, worships the included, the glamorous, the
ones who aren’t shamed and ridiculed, and the ones who seem
important and indispensable. The God of our culture and the
God that is preached in so many of our churches is not the God
who dies on a cross, is hated, spat upon, and is excluded and
scapegoated out of ignorance. No, our culture does not worship
a crucified God. The God Jesus revealed is still, in our very
own culture, excluded, mocked, scapegoated, made
expendable, and often killed, mostly in the name of God and
truth.
Where do we see this?
Our own culture, like every other culture past and present,
creates a category of persons that it deems expendable and then
subsequently victimizes through exclusion, ridicule,
scapegoating, and often through actual death. The ones who
constitute that category shift slightly from time to time, but
there is always a common denominator: it includes always
those who are the weakest.
Thus, for instance, our culture marginalizes and scapegoats the
sick, the poor, the handicapped, the unborn, the unattractive,
the non-productive, the aged. These we deem expendable and
subsequently take away full status within the human race.
Worse still, we identify God and holiness with those who are
doing the excluding, as for instance the ruling party. But this is
antithetical to true religion—and true wisdom.
Where is God? God is on the side of the victim, standing with
the one who is excluded, and specially present in the one being
ridiculed, and dying in the one who is being put to death.
True Christianity knows this. It worships the scapegoat—the
one who is surrounded by the halo of hatred.

Sacramental Preparation for Reconciliation and Eucharist
Family Based Religious Education (FBRE) is a monthly faith
formation program for Kindergarten through 8th grade children
and adults that provides the oppor tunity for parents/
guardians and children to learn about their faith together and
grow in relationship with Jesus as a family – the “domestic
church.” Preparation for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and
Eucharist are also coordinated through this program.

NCYC, 2019
In November, Blessed Sacrament is bringing a group of 15 to
NCYC (National Catholic Youth Conference), in Indianapolis,
Indiana. This event brings thousands of Catholic youth and
young adults from every corner of the country together for a
weekend of community, music, and worship.
We will be traveling to and from Indiana on a bus. If you
would like to help with the cost of transportation, please talk to
Coordinator of Youth Ministry, Leo Quinn.
NCYC, 2019
En noviembre, la Iglesia Blessed Sacrament llevará un grupo de
15 jóvenes a NCYC (National Catholic Youth Conference), en
Indianápolis, Indiana. Este evento reúne a miles de jóvenes

The FaithAction ID Card will cost $10 (cash or check only)
and will include your photo, full name, and address, date of

Safe Environment Training
There will be a safe environment training session
for recognizing and reporting child and elder
abuse and neglect. This training session, as
required by the Diocese of Raleigh, is for all
adults - clergy, employees and volunteers who
work with children and youth here at Blessed
Sacrament Parish or within the Diocese of
Raleigh. Any catechists, youth chaperones, any youth choir
members (18 years and older), and parents who receive children of

Entrenamiento de Ambiente Seguro
Habrá una sesión de Entrenamiento de Ambiente Seguro para
reconocer y reportar abuso y la negligencia de niños y los
incapacitados. Esta sesión de entrenamiento, requerida por la
Diócesis de Raleigh, es para todos adultos - el clero (sacerdotes/
diáconos), empleados, voluntarios y catequistas que trabajan con

Safe Environment Training—Entrenamiento de Ambiente Seguro
Laura Clemmons joins BSS this year and is
excited about working with our students.
She graduated from Oklahoma State
University in 1987 with a BS in Early
Childhood and Elementary Education.
Beginning in 1988 she spent 15 years
teaching in Chapel Hill - Carrboro at
various schools. While there, she taught 1st
through 5th grades. In 1998 she earned a
MEd from Meredith College. For the last 15
years of her career she has taught 3rd, 4th,
and 5th grades in ABSS. In addition, she
spent 4 years as a Curriculum Facilitator for
ABSS. She has been a nationally board
certified teacher for over 20 years.
Laura and her husband (Chris) have lived in Burlington for 20 years and have 3 children -
Zach (17), Lilly (14), and Catie (11). In their free time they enjoy sports and watching
movies together. The family is active members of First Baptist Church.
Laura looks forward to joining a faith based learning community.
