The old timers in KREIA had the privilege to know Ed Melton, Sr. Ed was, without doubt, the greatest recruiter in the history of KREIA. Every person that Ed came in contact with regarding a real estate matter was told of the merits of the Kentuckiana Real Estate Investors Association and encouraged to join. Ed was an active member on the KREIA Board of Directors on which he served for many years. He was also a dedicated mentor to many novice investors and enjoyed passing on his experience and wisdom.

I had the privilege to work with Ed for many years as his attorney. It was a unique learning experience for me to close Ed’s contracts and observe first hand his methods of insuring a true win-win situation for all parties involved in each transaction.

After his death in 1998, the Board of Directors created an award to be given in his name. The board established the following criteria to be used in selecting each recipient:

Contribution to membership education;

Development of fellowship;

Active recruitment of KREIA members; and

Active participation in the real estate industry.

The following individuals have received this most coveted award.

1998--Mark Lechner

1999--Rue McFarland

2000--Chris McCarty

2001--Hank Schildknecht

2002--Chris Dischinger

2003--Rosetta Melton

2004--Joe Hampton

2005--Mike Butler

2006--Jim Gardner

2007--George Foree

2008--Alan Johnson

2009--Dick Vreeland

2010--Connie Horsey

2011--Noble Roberts

2012—Jay Long

2013—Gene Dyson

As you can see from reviewing the above named recipients of the award, each of them has been very active in KREIA and greatly contributed to its success.

On November 20, the prior recipients of the Ed Melton Award met for our annual reunion. The purpose of the gathering is to talk about the relationship that all of us has had with KREIA, remember and pay tribute to Ed Melton, and to select the person that will be honored this year. This year we also mourned the death of Rosetta Melton, the sixth recipient of the award given in honor of her late husband.

Attached is a photograph of those that were in attendance that evening. As you can see, we as usual had a great turn out of the prior recipients.

I can assure you that each member of the selection committee has taken his or her mission very seriously in designating a deserving KREIA member to receive the award given in Ed’s memory. This will be the 17th year that the award has been presented. It is one of the highlights of the year, and we look forward to honoring this year’s recipient at the December meeting.

Louisville Metro Government

1. Louisville Metro Planning staff has finished its review of round two of the Land Development Code proposed text amendments. The Land Development Code (LDC) Round Two Text Amendments draft is published on the Planning & Design Services website.

The LM Planning Commission Public Hearing was on Monday August 11 from 1-5PM at the Old Jail building at the corner of Liberty and Sixth Streets.

Representatives of GLAR were at the hearing and the Planning Commission passed all recommendations except for the changes to transportation and

landscaping.

As the Planning Commission is finalizing the last few sections of the LDC changes, the Louisville Metro Council has held its first committee meeting on the proposed changes. The Ad Hoc Land Development Code Committee chaired by James Peden held its first committee on the subject on Monday September 8.

The next meeting of the Land Development Code Committee is scheduled for Monday October 20th at 3 PM. GLAR representatives will be present.

New Louisville Food HubIn a move to strengthen the production and distribution of locally grown food in Louisville, Mayor Greg Fischer this week granted a 24-acre vacant parcel of land in the West End worth $1.2 million to developers of a "Louisville Food Hub."

Where National Tobacco Co. once dried, cut and packaged tobacco purchased from Kentucky farmers on 30th Street, the new commercial agriculture park will process, store and distribute locally grown foodstuffs.

Fedex Could Bring Hundreds Of Jobs To Louisville

The plans indicate a more than 300,000-square-foot distribution facility would be located on about 46 acres in the second phase of Blankenbaker Station Business Park.Big facility, big jobs numbersInformation on the application indicates that the FedEx facility could bring hundreds of jobs to the area.Calculations used to determine parking show as many as 572 employees working multiple shifts in the 289,000-square-foot warehouse.The plan does not list the number of workers who would work in a nearly 15,000-square-foot office that would be part of the building.Hollenbach said the facility is being built to eventually house about 600 workers.By comparison, FedEx competitor United Parcel Service Inc. (NYSE: UPS) operates the Centennial Hub sorting facility at the Renaissance South Business Park. That 258,000-square-foot facility, which opened in 2008, now employs more than 1,500 workers.
